EFF on why artists should support the Orphan Works proposal

May 22, 2008 2:51pm

GregLondon:
ah well last I checked it was more. Even still... $45 to copyright each piece of art- lessee over 100 paintings, dozens of drawings...well... still a hefty bill. i'm sure the "database registration" won't be free either. This non-profit that is our government really likes to make a profit where it can.

EFF on why artists should support the Orphan Works proposal

May 22, 2008 12:56pm

I would have to agree with the above statements about "reasonable compensation". In, I think, every artists experience, it is the user (not the artist) and a court who determines what that is.

While it might seem all well and good to have copyrights and a central repository and all, do you know how much it costs to copyright something? Upwards of $250. Let's see... if I officially copyright every image i've ever created... Maybe I ought to open one of these registration repositories. Looks like good money.

The point is, that no artist can afford to copyright every work they have so that option is out and unless i am proven wrong I think "Reasonable Compensation" is a scam.

This is a good start but still seems to favor businesses over the artists whose work they hope to use and that seems an ill-proportioned plan.

Hitler plans Burning Man

May 21, 2008 11:27am

it's a good thing i'm hardened enough to find this funny. it was hilarious.

as for being hardened- i think the joy of life is finding laughter in EVERYTHING. even if it's hitler sobbing about Burning Man. And if you've gone to BM, then you can relate to this- WOT! No one's going this year! But I already got my fucking ticket! (thinking about one friend who is bailing on the art project (shameless plug) because his girlfriend isn't going...

and yes- best line ever: don't worry rob's not voting for mccain...

Tim Biskup: new gallery show in NYC

May 15, 2008 11:00am

Interesting and beautiful. These paintings remind me of this:
LSD drawings

The drawings were part of a gov. study on effects of LSD (once again) but on an artist. In the series the recorded comments of the artist are interesting (never seen those before). But the similarity is in the changing morphing nature of the image. Of course, these drawings are of it hitting an artist for the first time. As an artist my self, I can see how one can take this kind of rough concept and refine it into an actual vision of transformation. Cool stuff.

Day With No News -- brilliant BBC news-footage remix

May 14, 2008 12:03pm

spooky... i agree, it seems almost like they are ashamed. and with the music to it too it feels like a funeral...

I love the bottom part- nothing happened today, nobody died, The united states did not invade any countries (political commentary!) etc. The most interesting little blurb at the bottom tho:
things are pretty much as they were yesterday.

It's no better, but it's no worse and, if there is one thing the news is hellbent on making you feel, it's that it is always worse than it was yesterday.

I pray for the day when there really is, just one day, no new news.
artistic criticism: I just wish the transitions between them were a little smoother

This is, i believe, to prepare them for being fat and helpless later on in life. Then they can say - but I always had one of these... i just grew into it. Like my obese neighbor who, er, walks her dog... well, he walks while she drives her little cart. Maybe I'll photoshop a fat kid riding this thing... All AT&T phones $0.01 on Amazon today only

April 24, 2008 2:00pm

Ah At&T, one company who was in full support of Bush's wiretapping program. Who handed over tons of your personal information to the government. Without a subpoena.

I bailed on AT&T and joined Credo Mobile instead, a company that cares enough to donate a portion of it's profits to progressive causes. They are on the Sprint network which is not as good, but sometimes you have to take a step down in order to stand up for what you believe.

But, hey, if you're ideals bought out by a 1 cent phone...

One of the ways you subvert the dominant paradigm is by taking money from the dominant paradigm and using it however you want. by posting pics of Apple! or whatever...

yes, there is irony but i hope this isn't an attempt at taking the already dead horse that has been beaten to a bloody pulp and putting it through the blender... pardon the visual.

Flip & Tumble Bag easy to stash

April 13, 2008 12:14am

Well, i end up driving to the store most of the time. So i have a couple of great cloth Trader Joe's bags in the car at all times. THe trick is just remembering to return them to the car after you've brought your groceries inside. But that just takes getting over your own laziness...

On another note: whole foods will soon be getting rid of all plastic bags at their stores, IKEA charges for their bags, not long til everyone does this. It's best to either not take a bag (for small things like a book or something, do you really need a bag?) or to always have your cloth bag with you when u go grocery shopping... anways... my two cents

Decorated front yard in Ojai, CA

March 31, 2008 9:32pm

This yard always made me smile. The funny thing that the photo doesn't catch really is that there is a plethora of ducks. I don't know why but there are rubber duckies, rows of them, and wooden ducks and weathervane ducks. but they are all mixed in- it's not like they chose a theme of just ducks.

But the other part that always got me was that there used to be (i was by there a few weeks back and i think they changed it) a house next door, directly next door that is this elegant yellow victorian house with meticulouly manicured roses and a wrought iron fence, which is quite different than all the other houses as well.

so the juxtaposition of the two houses was priceless. a perfect piece of unplanned installation art.
