Paramount silencing portions of Indiana Jones in theaters?

May 28, 2008 4:56pm

They do embed dots and have been doing so for years. I guess I'm weird because I notice them every time, and hardly anyone I know sees them, but they drive me crazy. They're almost always inserted into frames with big white areas so they stand out really well, which I guess makes them easier to find for the people tracking down the piracy, but also harder for me to ignore.

Whedon fans vow to save Dollhouse from cancellation -- eight months before initial airdate

May 25, 2008 2:33pm

There were "save Lost" campaigns that started up the summer before Lost premiered, so this is nothing new. Of course, I doubt Dollhouse will end up as a huge success out of the gate like Lost, so it may actually need the support.

Graphic novel recommendation: Casanova Book 1: Luxuria

February 15, 2008 11:40am

A good book. But if there isn't a recommendation for Atomic Robo when the trade comes out (I'm thinking before the end of May), I'll be upset, cause that book is more fun than a barrel of robot monkeys.

Boom! comics' new series available as downloads on the same day as in stores

January 4, 2008 9:57am

I read exactly one comic book (for an English class in college) before I turned 25. Then out of boredom I downloaded a couple .cbz's... never would've paid for a comic or even bothered to go to the library for one. A few years later now, and I just had to buy a new bookshelf, because the one holding my trades is too packed (so maybe the bookshelf industry should be lobbying for cbz's as well).

Poker bots could destroy online poker playing

November 12, 2007 9:49pm

The poker sites have too much money to be made, I'm sure if the problem becomes big enough they'll ban VNC, furthering the cat and mouse game. In the end, there's too much money to be lost if the players stop trusting the sites to provide human competition, I'm sure they will continue to pursue these things aggressively. Bots will probably always be around, but they'll require constant innovation to stay afloat, which will limit their numbers.

But just an aside, a poker bot's ability to beat top pros has very little with a poker bot's ability to beat everyday people at low stakes games. Poor players play their cards and nothing else. Pros play their cards, what they think their opponents have, and what they think their opponents think they have. Which is why amateurs can frustrate pros, where plays that would work on other pros fail miserably against the "fish."

Overweight people have lower death rate

November 8, 2007 2:03am

The BMI is sketchy at best, since having lots of muscle mass and almost no body fat can qualify you as overweight.

But in the end, it seems like a new medical study (almost always related to food) comes out every few months and is later debunked by a subsequent study, proving just how little we really know about health and nutrition.

Puzzle: three-way pistol duel

September 21, 2007 6:10pm

Shooting at the 50% marksman first gives you a 10/36 chance to win, shooting at the 100% marksman gives you a 13/36 chance, shooting at no one puts you at 15/36.

The goal is to act first after the first death. Once its down to heads up, that is far and away the most important thing.

You vs. 100% guy, he goes first: 0% win, 100% lose.
You vs. 50% guy, he goes first: 25% win, 75% lose.
You vs. 100% guy, you go first: 33% win, 67% lose.
You vs. 50% guy, you go first: 50% win, 50% lose.

So it's more important that the two better marksmen survive your first turn to avoid having them turn on you before you shoot again.
