Apres CAPTCHA, le deluge
July 16, 2008 1:49pm
I think the Asirra system is promising. http://research.microsoft.com/asirra/ It asks users to identify pictures of cats and dogs, something that is very easy for a person to identify but it is difficult for a computer to tell the difference.
Additionally you can adopt any of the animals in the photographs. The images are pulled from petfinder that finds owners for homeless pets. Seams like a win-win, easier captchas for us and fewer animals get put down.
SenseSurface: Stick real knobs to on-screen virtual controls
July 15, 2008 10:08am
ah, I have seen this demoed on a Microsoft Surface. http://qik.com/video/125619 look around 20:30
I think it is great because you can save screen real estate, you don't need all those menus cluttering up your screen and can have a large set of coded knobs for different tasks. It felt very intuitive. How are the knobs held in place in this demo? The MS surface is a flat table so it did not have to hold the knobs in place.

Cranford Rose Garden tilt-shift timelapse

I looked at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden page, it seems strange to me that they credit the music for the time-lapse but not the photography.

Here is another fun tilt-shift time-lapse http://www.xrez.com/gallery/yosemite/xRez_yose15.html . This was made with a different technique. The image was projected onto a DEM (digital elevation model) and rendered in 3D allowing the camera to move as well as rendering accurate tilt-shift.

Good idea Bruce, sounds like it would be really easy w/ text messaging for coordination. How many people could they really arrest?

PETA offers $1 million prize for vat-grown meat
April 21, 2008 6:18pm
There are a few problems that would have to be overcome before this idea would make sense.
Right now to grow any kind of tissue outside the body requires calf serum. This is calf embryonic fluid. It is not known why this works yet so there is no synthetic substitute. You can get about 1 liter per calf you kill to get the fluid. The meat takes about 9 months to grow and you have to use fresh serum all the time so you have to kill at least dozens of calves for a baseball sized bit of meat.
A second problem is the meat (muscle) never gets flexed so without any exercise it has the consistency of jelly and is not very appetizing.

Zigview S2 Digital Viewfinder Extends Your DSLR's Utility

I have been using one of these for about 6 months. Generally I have a positive review, works as advertised and is super handy.
The criticisms I have of it are that it does not have that pro camera gear feel. The casing is plastic and it feels like it is very delicate. If you get this you will defiantly want to get some kind of hard case for it if you are doing any traveling. I was also a little surprised that there was no wireless option, lots of balloon and RC aerial photographers have wireless systems that are similar.
I think the screen on this is standard def, too low to do accurate focusing, it is much more useful for framing when your camera is in an awkward position. If you are interested in focus you may want to use a laptop and either the software that shipped w/ your camera for remote capture or something like Breeze Systems DSLR Remote Pro
