London Mayoral vote can't be verified due to e-voting irregularities
July 2, 2008 4:54am
To clarify, the counting of the _paper_ ballots was electronic - not the casting of ballots.
In any case, still disturbing.
I voted, and was disappointed to see how few other people did, given the size of the population in London.
The voter turnout didn't do much to dispel the idea that people in the UK enoy being ruled by a small unrepresentative elite (Labour, Conservative, elected or otherwise)

My favorite undercover anthropologist game the moment is to walk around town and count the number of people wearing blue denim jeans. Try it next time you are out and about. They're the new toga for the western world!

I think the approach sister y advocates is good one, not only for the nice way it avoids pissing on people's wheaties ie. making them angry/sad/upset (which as nice people we don't like doing), but also because it is a pragmatically more effective way of getting people to change their opinions than straight criticism.
When you criticise/attack someone directly, their defences come up, and they are less likely to hear anything you have to say, and hence their opinion will never change, whereas by demonstrating the 'better' alternative without attacking their existing beliefs, they are more likely to come to see the qualities of what you are advocating.

I've spotted a few stencils done on the sidewalk in London where they have used soapy water and a scrubbing brush to wash away the accumulated dust and grime, and left the desired design in clean white concrete.
Thought that was pretty cool.

It certainly is surprising to think that all the classical greek scultpure and architecture could once have been brightly painted. I remember seeing traces of the paint in the interior of a cathedral, and my idea of how cathedrals looked 'back in the day' was transformed.

That said, I still think the requirements for men as less of an imposition, and, notably the requirements differ between the sexes.
Of course now we're truly exposing the weirdness of compulsory clothing.

>The rule is simple to cover your head if you are a women. And by the way all my muslim haters, the same thing is prescribed for the jewish and christian women. Look at the nuns!!!
Can't, god said so.
Why don't the men have to cover their heads?
Pointing out other examples of crazy doesn't make your pet crazy any less.
>I know plenty Muslim-American feminists that CHOOSE to veil as a statement against the "male gaze," so I think veiling can be very feminist.
(One of) my issues with people reclaiming veil wearing as non-sexist empowerment is that it looks exactly like veil wearing due to oppression. Doesn't upset very much social order at all, thus all the forced veiling continues on. I could also mention false consciousness here.
In addition, I think if you want to tackle the issue of the "male gaze", you should tackle the root cause, i.e. that the unwanted "male gaze" is objectifying, dehumanizing, and sexist because the male doing the gazing is sexist.
