Britain will make foreigners carry RFID identity cards and will put us in a huge, Orwellian database: the rest of Britain will be next

September 26, 2008 9:07pm

I'm a UK citizen, and I'm getting married before the end of the year, and my partner is from outside the EU. So naturally what I've read here seriously worries me, particularly the part about a 'quota' in existence potentially limiting the number of spousal immigrants coming to the UK.

I would be deeply appreciative if anyone out there can point me to any online resources relating to the possibility or even the hint of such a quota coming into existence, since I want to return to the UK with my future wife next year.

I must say, being also a Scottish citizen, I'm increasingly in favour of Scottish recession from the UK. It has nothing to do with nationalism. It has everything to do with boarding a lifeboat and escaping what increasingly looks like a sinking ship.

What Should I Do In Berlin?

December 21, 2007 5:31pm

Let me second the Kunsthaus Tacheles, it's an incredible place - I was there the second time I was in Berlin in the late 'Nineties. It's half of a building - the rest was bombed during WW2 and it was subsequently taken over as a self-governing artist's community and was nearly pulled down more than once over the years, but was preserved once it was shown to be quite stable and inhabitable.

There's a bar at ground level, where as you look up you see bombed-open rooms looking out over a courtyard featuring - and this one really sticks in my mind - a heavily graffiti'd Mig Russian jet. Go up the stairs and you'll find any number of artists rooms you can often go in to check out their work. An absolute must-see in my mind, particularly given it feels like you're standing in the middle of a set from Escape from New York. Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe: hilarious critic screams abuse at his telly

Almost forgot ... there was mention of Nathan Barley. It's easily one of the best British comedies of the past several years, and is indeed co-written by Charlie. It's about exactly the kind of people you'll see (media types, basically) in some of the youtube clips of Screenwipe.

Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe: hilarious critic screams abuse at his telly

I believe Charlie was also one of the writers on the incredibly infamous 'paedophilia' episode of the spoof tv show Brass Eye. Screenwipe is, indeed, utterly unmissable.
