As a side note, who uses a bike lock that can be defeated by bolt cutters? Even my $10 fairly light cable lock is thick enough to prevent that.

Show me a cable lock that is thick enough to prevent cutting and I will show you a bigger pair of bolt cutters!

That why I now park my bike in my cubicle.

Joel Johnson Wilderness Internet Experience

May 7, 2008 8:07am

Two nights in the woods is fun, but not really enough to test out your gear.

In 2005, I hiked for 6 months with a Nikon camera, garmin GPS, iPod (for storing the photos), a sharp Zaurus palmtop computer(to write logs and edit photos), a cell phone (to send out the logs and photos) and a solarroll 4.5 to charge everything.

All of the gear worked flawlessly and I would recommend all of it. However, getting it to all work together was tricky. There was soldering involved and I even had to write a driver to connect the zaurus to the cell phone.

Poor lil' Mona... With only 1000 pixles, she looks so tiny and scared up there.

I know! Her sister Big Mona will take care of her. She takes up 100,000 pixels - but thanks to the magic of PNG compression, still weights in under 1000 bytes.

Mazda destroys 4,703 shiny new cars worth $100 million

April 29, 2008 4:31pm

@Anantha

Essentially it was a safety issue.

I disagree. To Mazda it was a "brand issue" and to me is an "environmental" issue. They could have spent a little money to have the vehicles safety inspected, slapped on a salvage title and given them to a good cause. I am sure that there are a lot of low income people out on the road in much more unsafe vehicles. This route would have given them a great return on investment when it comes to branding.

Instead, they decide to do the above interview where they casually talk about destroying the cars. They didn't even try to label it recycling...

... but, we do agree on one thing: That was a great Seinfeld episode.

Mazda destroys 4,703 shiny new cars worth $100 million

April 29, 2008 3:34pm

Seems to me that donating them would have done a heck of a lot more for the "brand". Now, I will forever equate Mazda with Wasteful.

I remember reading the wired article about the brave workers that risked their lives to save the ship and it's cargo. What a shame.

Against Ben Stein's wishes, lizards rapidly evolve after introduction to island

April 23, 2008 12:20pm

@rebdav,

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse Although donkey's and horses have a common ancestor, they have each evolved along different paths to the point that they now have a different number of chromosomes. Donkeys have 62 chromosomes, whereas horses have 64.

This means that they are still genetically similar enough to reproduce, but different enough that (for the most part) the offspring are sterile. Mules are a type of F-1 hybrid.

Eventually, the lizards on this island may evolve to the point where they can no longer breed with the lizards from the other island. However, they can still mate with each other. If a genetic mutation occurred that did not allow a lizard to mate there would be no way to pass on that genetic information...

Against Ben Stein's wishes, lizards rapidly evolve after introduction to island

April 23, 2008 11:50am

@Evidence and others,

I would say true evolution would be the change of one species into another species. Dog to a cat.

Your saying that only demonstrates a misunderstanding of evolution. It's just as silly as saying that people came from monkeys... Rather, evolution shows us that dogs and cats (or people and monkeys for that matter) had a common ancestor. A dog will never become a cat. However, given enough time, a change of environment and maybe some gamma radiation - it's ancestors will become something other then a dog.

Yes everyone, it takes a very long time for a complex organism to evolve. If you don't trust the fossil record, why not instead look at simpler organisms. Viruses and bacteria are readily evolving.

1K Competition: Seagate ships billionth drive, and we've got one for you

April 22, 2008 12:21pm

Thanks for the nod, Rob.

Here is my real entry: Tiny Mona

I decided to create an image - a 1K reproduction of the famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci.

* Image Size: 25×40 = 1000 pixles
* File Size: Exactly 1000 Bytes

And yes, I used PngSlim for maximum compression. It actually took a lot of trial-and-error to get exactly 1K.

1K Competition: Seagate ships billionth drive, and we've got one for you

April 22, 2008 9:51am

P.S. The Seagate logo up top? Too big. It's 1,025 bytes!

Well just hold on a minute Rob...

Thats a PNG. Did you remember to crunch it? I bet that it is full of unnecessary metadata. Reordering the bits would probably help a little too!

Thanks to a little program called PngSlim, that image is now only 799 bytes. Thats a loss of 226 bytes or 28%. All without changing a single pixel.

You could now fit 275,954,704 more of them on that 1 Terabyte drive.

Litmus test: Any kind of social indicator used to classify someone either favorably or unfavorably.

Jesus hit by lightning

February 14, 2008 12:39pm

@the_pants

Lightning forms along the path of least resistance, which is not necessarily the shortest path to ground. I found several pictures on flikr where the bolt seems to hit off center. Here's one of them.

Wikipedia says that the O Cristo Redentor is constructed from reinforced concrete meaning that it is full of metal rebar. If the photo is real, then strike probably occurred where the rebar was closer to the surface of the concrete.

The one thing that make me judge the authenticity is the quality of the photo. If someone went through all the trouble to set up the shoot, why not use a decent camera?

Jesus hit by lightning

February 14, 2008 11:20am

1) Photographing lighting at night is easy. You just need a storm and a camera that can take long exposures. Here is a shot I took this summer.

2) As others have stated that statue is the tallest thing around and probably gets struck often.

1 + 2 = likely to be a real photo.

That being said, I don't put much religious significance in the photo. I bet the statue of liberty gets struck all the time.

Web site converts photos to vectors

November 21, 2007 1:05pm

@ MATT

As the site states "Vector art is useful because it allows you to scale an image without making it blurry or pixelated."

Now, converting a photo of an eye to vector art may seem a little silly (no offense mark), but check out the logo examples on the site. They have turned the pixelated based images into items that will look as good on the side of a building as they do on stationary.
