Stuart Kauffman: Call the universe God

May 12, 2008 5:21pm

exactly, Tenn, you're right. I meant that there is not a unique, all-knowing "God" like in the judeochristian/muslim sense of the term... should be more careful with capitalization... God is in the details, after all.

(if S/he/It were anywhere at all, of course)

Stuart Kauffman: Call the universe God

Antinous, maybe I'm nit-picking, but there is no god in buddhism, not even a widely generic one.

The future of funerals: melting bodies with lye

May 12, 2008 3:54pm

Shutz:
"Basically, you inject one fluid that temporarily preserves the body for up to 2 weeks or so, then, right before burial, you inject the second fluid, which negates the preservation effects of the first one."

Yikes... that brought to mind images of reanimated corpses waking up confused, screaming in pain and horror, after being injected with the second fluid...

On a serious side, until freeze drying becomes common place, I think cremation is the way to go; I've never understood why waste good lands burying people, and the emotional attachment to something that basically amounts to a patch of grass and a block of stone over a decomposing body.

Epic USB duplicator burns 60 thumbdrives at once: what would you copy?

April 30, 2008 9:30am

This should be absolutely useless, but wouldn't it be fun to hack the thing and turn it into some sort of RAID array or expandable hard drive?

Celebrity robot tee

April 18, 2008 1:58pm

Ulysis, this quote from the original product page (I think), which appeared in the comments at Gizmodo, clears the issue:

"CORRECTIONS: The newly reprinted version of this design has had two amendments. The previous version included one character which has been determined to not be a robot at all. The previous version also included a robot dog that virtually nobody recognized. This character was swapped out with a new robot figure. These changes are reflected in the detailed image below."

Home computing, circa 1970

Bottlekid, that's no Guitar Hero; that computer rocks so much, you have to have power chords while using it! The only thing missing is some cowbell. Also, don't the kids look as if they were screaming "YAY, PAPER!!!"?

Atari user's desk, circa 1983

Sweet! The Atari 800 was my first computer. I was dissapointed, I thought I was getting a Colecovision for Christmas, but instead got the Atari; 30-odd years later, I'm a certified code monkey / office occult-tech guru / all-around geek. I wonder what would've happened, had I got the Coleco.

Incredible Epcot concept painting

long comment section is loooong.

Didn't got around to read all the comments, so I don't know if this was mentioned before, but... I think it would be cool to have an "emvowell/disemvowell" button, only for disemvowelled posts, so everybody could check by themselves the alleged douchebaggery which caused the disemvowellment. Could work just like the "spoilers" buttons I've seen in some message boards.

Anti-emo pogroms rage throughout Mexico

March 27, 2008 3:56pm

#86: yes, sure.

translation of the video @78:

(shouting)

Reporter: This is how dozens of young people intended to finish off a group of kids in Plaza de Armas, Queretaro

(shouting)

Reporter: The aggressors congregated there with a sole purpose: to expel the so-called "Emos".

Reporter: Days before, through the Internet, a call was made to rescue Plaza de Armas. An "anti-Emo" movement requested to end with a group of kids who gathered there; kids who are characterized, amongst other things, for dressing in black and covering their faces with bangs.

(crowd chanting "he wants to cry! he wants to cry!")

Reporter: The call was succesful, hundreds of people were about to lynch the Emos.

Kid in trenchcoat: They don't bother me, the Emos, in and by themselves... what bothers me is that they take a spot for them, that they want to have the square just for themselves, so to speak... it also bothers me that they look more like girls than boys.

Reporter: Fortunately, the intervention of some young people and the police prevented a fatal ending.

Man in blue shirt: We make a kind request to these kids' parents, to be more aware of their activities...

Reporter: It was anounced that in the coming weekends, security will be tightened in downtown Queretaro, in response to a new call against Emos.

(Reporter signs off)

#83, you say: "Quadrophenia"

although, knowing the way they translate movie titles around here, I'm willing to bet that they called it something like "Salvaje Juventud en Ruedas"

("Wild Youth on Wheels")

Anti-emo pogroms rage throughout Mexico

March 27, 2008 1:39pm

#75 Heh... you're right, I forgot Rob Halford ;)

but seriously... that emo-bashing "riot" in México D.F. was surreal, but the one in Queretaro, which I saw before this one, was a bit, ehm, darker:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMp7Nnn7VbY

A mob circling one guy, chanting "he wants to cry!", and the guy @1:05 saying that it bothers him that they "look more like girls than boys"... yay, tolerance! Funny, i bet that most of those mobbers would crap their pants if they were confronted by a gang of hip-hoppers, heh!

Anti-emo pogroms rage throughout Mexico

March 27, 2008 1:05pm

I went through a lot of "phases" in my life, which involved dabbling in several subcultures, including both Metal and Goth, and I gotta say, I find Emo-hating somewhat disturbing... I understand making fun of it, it is as fair a target as any other human expression, but hating, truly hating people for being whiny and wearing makeup? What should be despised is the fascism, machismo and homophobia inherent in Metal culture. I understand that these metalheads are mostly teenagers, but sadly, not all of them outgrow those ideas, certainly not in Latin America.

DNA Paternity Testing Kits On Sale Over the Counter

March 25, 2008 6:11pm

Thanks for pointing out all that material to check, my productivity went out the window this afternoon ;)

I don't expect a full DNA lab of a $30 box (note to self: work harder on your irony skills), but I find the product's name a bit misleading; it's a DNA collecting kit, not a paternity test.

Hypnotist thief on video

March 25, 2008 11:50am

Hypnosis?? Did you see the guy's hair?!? Sorry, but with that evil beard and bushy eyebrows you don't need hypnosis to distract the cashier. Hm... in fact... the man looks like an evil version of Count von Count.

Nine Inch Nails made at least $750k from CC release in two days

March 5, 2008 10:18am

The relevant thing is, you can take out the middleman. Granted, all those DVD and vinyls cost money, but even so, I'm sure the profit they are making is way higher than that of a traditional release, and that applies to any band, regardless of fanbase size. Once the distribution model is figured out (and I really believe that NIN is going in the right direction), the new game will be promoting your music, and that can be done independently, too.

Booticon, Kid: I don't think that only NIN or Radiohead can pull this off, just because they are who they are. Any lesser known band with a solid fan base could do it too and still make a decent profit; of course, on a much smaller scale and with a lot less hoopla. Take a look, for example at Einstürzende Neubauten and their "sponsored" albums.

No friends yet.
