April 21, 2008 2:19pm

We salute you, duct tape.

Skeptic giggles on Indian national TV as mystic totally fails to curse him to death

March 25, 2008 8:53am

@#7: Another sign somebody is fake and not a true occult engineer is if they start calling themselves something like "occult engineer"

Chavez to USA: "Shove your terror list"

March 16, 2008 10:11am

For all of you idiots shouting "dictatorship" at Chavez:

It would be one thing to be stupid enough to fall for the Bush administration's (and right-wing Venezuelan) propaganda about Chavez, but to recite it publicly leaves no doubt as to your intelligence, since it is clearly lies and distortions. Chavez was trying to diminish term limits in Venezuela, but this was voted against by a majority of Venezuelans, who also voted for Chavez. Because he is not the puppet the American neocons and oil companies want in office, he is a threat, and nothing like a good "dictatorship" label to obfuscate the facts rile up the citizenry and neutralize a threat.

Map of choose your own adventure book

March 8, 2008 8:58pm

There's a great webisode series called Mimi and Flo that is basically a choose-your-own-adventure video

Open source compressed earth block machine

February 25, 2008 3:17pm

I'm curious how strong the bricks are, and how well they hold up against the elements.

Remixable German documentary about me and Internet freedom

February 25, 2008 3:14pm

"I write for magazines -- if you'd like to commission me to write to your spec, you can found a magazine and approach me with a contract."

Not with that grammar!

Just kidding dude, keep up the good work.

EFF announces Pioneer Award winners

February 21, 2008 8:44pm

So... Jimbo Wales, who has directed an anti-fair use campaign at Wikipedia (including the recent purge of fair-use images), is a panel judge for the EFF. Interesting.

Swedish couple fined for naming their child "Brfxxccxxmnpcccclll mmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116"

February 20, 2008 12:32pm

#18: Perhaps instead of waiting for children to be ready to pick their own name, the parents should simply PARENT. As for the ridicule faced by the child - GOOD! - ridicule is society's way of letting people know how foolish they are being.

Objectivism in Bioshock

February 17, 2008 11:59pm

I'll bet moonbat is a hit at parties. Oh, wait - do objectivists party with other people?

Yoko Ono: No, I'm not suing Lennon Murphy over "Lennon."

February 14, 2008 1:12pm

Have I mentioned the behind-the-scenes forces attempting to stop my band McCartney from taking over the world? I may have to fold up shop and show my titties on the internets again... sigh.

Four more podcasts I like

February 13, 2008 10:51pm

Yes! The Casbah is one of my favorite podcasts - a great radio show the likes of you probably won't find on your dial. It's been on for at least like ten years now, great choice for fave podcast.

Senate votes to immunize telecoms over domestic spying

February 12, 2008 3:17pm

The good thing about these clear-cut issues is it gives us a record of the names of the Republicans who have infiltrated the Democratic Party.

It is time to push our party back to the left. VOTE!

UAE's very scary drug laws

February 8, 2008 4:53pm

So don't be shady and suspicious and you won't get in trouble!

Oh, I totally agree - the sheer gall of the man, thinking he could wear any kind of hairstyle he wanted, he totally should have had his hair cut short and straightened, and perhaps a good skin lightening treatment, right?

Funny story about computer confiscation in Denmark

February 7, 2008 11:25am

When, then I may be a jerk, Bour3, but you are simply a police-state stooge.

Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends on Google Video

February 1, 2008 8:50pm

Louis Theroux is the best - his tongue is always in cheek, and he succeeds because he tries hard not to show that. He's the knowing straight man who feigns a bit of ignorance to get things out of people. He does this, though with good humor and general empathy with the people he's talking to, and it's not exploitive that he does this in the fringes of society, that's the whole point - to draw and spell out the differences between what is considered "fringe" or "normal".

If you can find it, his interview with Michael Jackson's father is not to be missed.

207 pranksters stand still for 5 mins in Grand Central Stn

February 1, 2008 8:35am

Ugh. For an improv troupe, it doesn't show very much imagination to simply repeat the 'standing still' flash mob that's already been done and widely reported.

Interview with AT&T's "Filter the Internet" Exec

January 23, 2008 9:22pm

SITE ADMIN:

Maybe my eyes are just deceiving me, but I can't seem to find the link to the story, or the story itself on Boing Boing Gadgets about the Boing Boing staffer who went onto the AT&T-sponsored show and took them to task for this invasion of privacy. Has it been taken down? Were you told to take it down? Surely this would be worth a story itself, unless again I just looked right past it twice, through the haze of smoke around my computer.

Talking About AT&T's Internet Filtering on AT&T's The Hugh Thompson Show

January 23, 2008 1:25am

We need to take this kind of courage and expand on it constantly. Yes Men-style pranks are the least we should be doing to these kinds of corrupt bastards.

Tom Cruise's Scientology video -- and Gawker's legal battle to host it

January 19, 2008 12:14pm

all these posts and not one mention of http://www.xenu.net/

Cory thanked Xenu at the end of his post. He just misspelled it. Not to worry, we will trap his soul in a volcano for this transgression.

Florida school board approves McDonald's report-cards and school-bus audio ads

January 19, 2008 11:54am

Just think - if McDonald's would just start buying schools, we could see a resurgence in the old characters. Ronald McDonald High School Hamburglars are gonna kick your ass!

Premier of Alberta threatens to sue blogging uni student for registering a domain with his name in it

January 9, 2008 11:10pm

What about the basic right of satirists? For a while I remember the domain holder of newyorktimes.com refused to give it over to the paper, stating his right to parody the paper. I see it now directs to the real site of nytimes.com, though, I wonder what happened with that. Couldn't be powerful interests, bloating their chests when they realize their own stupidity, could it?

End of skeptic James Randi's million dollar challenge

January 8, 2008 6:50pm

#12: "I have heard a man's footsteps walking down the upstairs hallway when I was alone in the house."

How did you know they weren't a woman's footsteps if you only heard them?

"For some people, there is no amount of evidence that will convince them."

How about a little evidence? A shred, perhaps, is that too much to ask? You make it seem as if the mountains of evidence supporting the paranormal are somehow being ignored. The challenge is very simple and still has two years, it's a shame it won't be used after that, it is a great weapon against deluded fools who think they can argue their way into making fairy tales real.

#38: "I get the strong impression that Sheldrake, Cambridge Trinity College's Perrott-Warrick Scholar and a Fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, honestly isn't interested in Randi's money".

So your point is why would somebody as esteemed as a "noetic" scientist be interested in something as real as money? Hee-LAR-ious. If he could prove any of his quackery, you would think he would do so just to prove he could, then donate the money, perhaps to the "Institute of Noetic Sciences". These charlatans usually have better excuses for dodging the challenge than "don't need the money", surely his own flimsy excuse is better.

Please reconsider, Randi - surely you can streamline the process somehow, and use insurance instead of a trust. How are we to survive in a world dominated by "noetic" scientists? You are not just losing your most effective weapon - we are, too.

Suburban family discovers hidden room filled with toxic mold and a taunting note

January 6, 2008 2:00pm

rather, #23 for inventiveness.

Also, late at night writing "mold" in large letters in the front lawn with Round-up

Suburban family discovers hidden room filled with toxic mold and a taunting note

January 6, 2008 1:57pm

Haha, #9: "mold porn"

and #27 for inventiveness

but, it's bad enough when stumbleuponers can't be bothered to link to original stories, it's worse when Boing Boing can't be bothered to. The main link should go to the original story, and then thanks to the blogger who brought it to your attention. You shouldn't link only to the bloggers reaction to the original story.

Also, somebody needs to lose their ability to sell real estate.

Thermochromic toilet seat

January 2, 2008 12:06pm

Who doesn't lay down a thick padded circle of toilet paper every time a sit-down visit in public is required?

"Why does it hurt when I pee?" - Frank Zappa

Terminus -- award winning short film from Canada

Oh, wow - this is the same guy who did that amazing Citroen commercial, which is available, too.

Icelandic "shopping terrorist" menace thwarted at JFK

December 21, 2007 8:01pm

She should have gone Bjork on their asses

Texas evacuees subject to criminal checks

December 20, 2007 5:30pm

Of course, if we got rid of the ridiculous mandatory minimums for non-violent offenders (and war on drugs), we could keep people who commit sexual crimes, who have a notoriously difficult time rehabilitating, in jail in the first place. Why worry about them all of a sudden when there's an emergency, and not before when they are just as likely to re-offend?

UNICEF photo of the year

December 19, 2007 1:43pm

If this is a photo contest, perhaps UNICEF could have at least put up pictures with enough resolution to see the people's faces. Even on the linked page, where you can click an author's name to see their other pics, all of them are horrible resolution.

Police ordered to pull over people doing nothing wrong

December 18, 2007 3:18pm

They considered that, Garbanzo... unfortunately, Starbucks doesn't have the right kind of donuts.

Occulture music

December 17, 2007 5:00pm

"Science can help us to understand the world but it doesn't have much to say about what our place in the universe is."

What a load of crap. It was science that told us the universe does not revolve around the Earth. Of course the scientists were persecuted by religious mystics and theists, but this is usually what happens when you try to make somebody realize they are living their lives according to fairy tales.

Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe: hilarious critic screams abuse at his telly

December 5, 2007 12:57pm

YES! I lived in the UK for a couple of years, and Charlie Brooker's "Screen Burn" column was unmissable, one of the first things I'd read. If you have the chance, pick up a physical copy of a Saturday Guardian newspaper (comparable to a Sunday paper in the US), that's where he used to have his weekly columns, in the "Guide" pull-out. I hadn't thought about him since I left, and this show might have been around for however many seasons now, but I hadn't seen it, so huge thanks for the link.

Unusual Christmas tree decoration: "Unborn Baby Ornament - US Troop Model"

December 4, 2007 3:35pm

That's the one of the sickest things I've ever seen. I love it.

Decorative toilet decals

November 18, 2007 4:21pm

The first thing I saw when I looked at that decal was a caricature of an Arab (looking left) wearing a showercap, and maybe eyeglasses and a collared shirt. Does anybody else see it?

Turkey Cannon Not as Fun as It Sounds

November 16, 2007 2:42pm

Actually I just saw Wolfgang Puck take brining one step further: he added honey and molasses to his brine, which resulted in the most picture-perfect browning I've seen. But to brine the turkey you need to do it overnight and have enough fridge space, but if you do, no matter what the cooking method it will result in a moister meat. This seems to be a good alternative to ensure some moistness if you don't have the time/space to brine, but also remember to stuff some butter (with herbs/garlic/etc) under the skin, and to brush the whole outside with oil right before cooking.

SomaFM's holiday music channel is now live

November 13, 2007 10:52pm

Looooove SomaFM's Ill. Street Lounge - Probably a better holiday choice than the holiday station... for the hip daddy-o's, anyway ;)

Weird interruption of Ray Bradbury play

October 22, 2007 4:27pm

Did the director ask for ID? Or at least ask if there were any teachers in the audience?

No friends yet.
