Videos of the worst pop songs ever
May 1, 2008 2:01pm
@ 58 -- i don't get why that's on your "bad" list. it's a classic song, and it's a fairly standard 80s video. the band could (did?) sleepwalk through it. unless you hate it just for the gold lamé 80s style fashion shirt... then i completely understand.
@75 -- "my sharona" is a perfectly crafted piece of pop. you can't sully it with your slanderous words.
Videos of the worst pop songs ever
May 1, 2008 7:53am
@ #19 -- in billy squier's defense, it was the early 1980s. after michael jackson put out his thriller album, EVERYONE had to get on the dance video bandwagon. just ask pat benatar. she has said that she will never ever EVER do another dancing video after "love is a battlefield".
that sammy johns video should be enshrined in the smithsonian, just for showing REAL 70s vans and fashion. awesome!

Violent video-games are relaxing
April 4, 2008 6:41am
actually, Tetsuo, i don't believe that's a casual player for WoW. the average playtime per week is 25 hours, so i think casual play would fall below that. i play about 20-25 per week, and i don't feel like i'm particularly casual, and i'm certainly not a hardcore player, either.

Thrill of looping: the latest ride of 1934
March 16, 2008 9:56am
@3: ok, so i just HAD to look it up. for the easy edification of others, here's info i found about the coney island version here http://tinyurl.com/2p4fq7:
Captain Paul Boyton opened Sea Lion Park in the spring of 1895. It looked run down by today's standards and had only a few attractions. One of the most popular was the Shoot-the-Chutes, a ride he had perfected one year before at his park in Chicago. Another was the Flip Flap railway, designed by Lina Beecher. Roller coasters often get the unnecessary reputation as dangerous creations, unfortunately this was one ride where that was well deserved. The Flip Flap has made its way into the annals of roller coaster history because it was such a badly designed ride. It is hard to tell from this picture, but the coaster's inversion was different from almost every loop today in that it was perfectly circular. This may not seem like a bad idea, but it is pretty obvious Mr. Beecher was not very experienced with physics. Instead of an enjoyable trip upside down, riders experienced 12 g's as they went through the loop. The most g's found now on a coaster hovers between 5 and 6 and those a specific sitting position. In the Flip Flap a few passengers simply stepped in a "box on wheels" and hoped that by using a death grip on the sides of the car they would not fall out (which was unlikely because of the g's) or get injured. The ride had a reputation for snapping rider's necks and was dismantled after it had run a few years. However, the concept of the loop was not lost forever.
sounds FANTASTIC. more evidence that our grandparents could kick our wimpy asses.

Video about quest to get Dalai Lama to carry Olympic torch
February 29, 2008 7:16pm
@ #9: yes, this was quite the to-do when he said this. he is a product of his culture and upbringing, but, he is also a rational, scientificly-minded man. i am sure that his mindset can be changed in this regard. even the buddha initially made the mistake of rejecting the idea of women as monks, but after a period of time he saw the error of this judgement, and he recanted. if the buddha can overcome his clinging to outdated viewpoints, surely the dalai lama can, too.

i agree with #3 -- crying "sellout" is ridiculous in this day and age, when all the bands from the 60s through the 90s are cashing in any way they can, and newer bands recognize that it's just good business and marketing sense. bring on the gonzo chucks, i say.
You Suck at Photoshop #7
February 22, 2008 2:46pm
just to clarify, i LOVE his warcraft playing friend and things he says, i'm just glad that donny's not getting into a cookie-cutter mentality about these, e.g.: (1) set up premise, (2) choose photo with hilarious tie-in to previous episodes, (3) get interrupted, (4) warcrack buddy calls in, (5) teach something, (6) warcrack buddy again, (7) finish tutorial and end in mid-spinout.

207 pranksters stand still for 5 mins in Grand Central Stn
February 1, 2008 12:29pm
i think this is awesome. i don't see any of the commuters hindered by their presence, in fact, it seems clear that people really liked it. the only one that seemed inconvenienced in the video was the guy in the cart, and even he seemed to think it was cool. if he was really put out because his life and his tasks were more important than an unplanned stop for a few minutes, he would have just pushed his way through.

@badc0ffee: i admit not following his link, so you may be right whe you assert that i wasn't fully understanding his argument. but in my defense, i guessed that the link was blogspam. i just checked out the link provided, and i'm still unclear as to why the site indicated is relevant, so maybe i was right all along?
i think "electronica" (while admittedly an industry-coined term) is still as valid as, say, "classical", or "classic rock". it's a handy catch-all.

Pacifist Warcraft player trying to hit the top without killing anything
January 9, 2008 9:20am
#15 beat me to it -- the guy doing is a 50-year old programmer, not a college student. (but it's fair to say he could be both, i guess...)
i started playing WoW in october, and just got my mage to lvl 40 this past weekend. i am *very* impressed with his dedication and creativity in working his rogue this way. it's hard enough to get to 40 (let alone 70 or above, i am sure) playing the normal way, let alone adding in handicaps like this. i find his take refreshing.
i think one of the things that i find wonderful about warcraft is the creativity that gets generated by the blizzard creators and also among the players. recently on several servers there was a unofficial "naked gnome race" organized, and only level 1 naked gnomes could run. it didn't take place on the server i'm on, sadly, but i'm hoping to find a video of one. the sight of hundreds of naked gnomes running from ironforge to stormwind and down to goldshire must have been hilarious.

even if it's technically not possible for them to be fried into a hot, thick stew, i think it's a good thing that the perception persists that it *would* be the result. i mean, people are dumb enough as it is -- there's no need to have joe barbecue rigging up stuff like this on a regular basis! hear hear for fear!

w00t is Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year for 2007
December 12, 2007 12:52pm
grant's article is interesting, but i seriously doubt his conclusion. "w00t" came from hackers, not from dance culture. as a D&D gamer from the earliest days of that game, i can say that i NEVER heard it uttered by anyone i knew who played it, but i do know that gamers and hackers are like two peas in a pod, and the language of the latter tends to migrate to the former. gamers popularized it, but occam's razor says that hackers originated the term, not dancers -- not a lot of gamers in dance clubs!
two things come to my mind, though:
1) that maybe this is just an instance of some sort of pop cultural zeitgeist, and it surfaced almost concurrently in different areas at the same time; and
2) i know that lexicographers prefer some sort of paper trail when determining the history of things, but maybe this whole debate is also illustrating the danger we are in of losing the real story of our digital culture. no trail to follow in early BBS conversations!

Letter from Yoko to John - 12/8/2007
December 7, 2007 12:31pm
i was only 13 when john was killed, but he was (and still is) my favorite beatle (although george gives him a run for the money sometimes).
anyway, i will never forget that day. like i said, i was only 13, but it was clear to me that the world changed that day -- it's like a part of every adult i knew had died, and i felt it right along with them. i am also part japanese, so i have always been drawn to yoko, too, and have always taken up her defense when people slam her. it's been said here and other places before, but hatred of her really IS based in thinly-veiled racism, and leftover resentment (and national guilt?) from WWII.
she is an amazing, creative, passionate woman, and i think it's a testament to john's compassion and forward-thinking that he stood by her every step of the way. we miss you john, and our hearts are with you, yoko, on your hardest day of every year.

Amazon Kindle eBook Review (Verdict: Confusing, Expensive...but Promising)

the thing is, the mobipocket converter is windows only. no mac love. that's what makes it a deal-breaker for me. i want to port my existing PDF library over to my ebook reader. i think the kindle has a lot going for it, but no mac love is the deal breaker for me.
Amazon Kindle eBook Review (Verdict: Confusing, Expensive...but Promising)

man, i really WANT this to succeed. i've been a fan and customer of amazon since the early days. the lack info about mac compatibility has me regretfully putting this in the "no, not yet" pile, though. maybe the 2.0 will be the one i want.

Steampunk Dalek!

i agree that dr. who has always had a steampunky aesthetic, whether the creators consciously knew it or not. that's part of the doctor's appeal -- he's a DIY type of guy!
the past couple years of dr. who have been especially steampunk influenced, i think. i always get a little leap of joy when we get to see the inside of the tardis, with its seemingly-random gears and dials, and tubes and blinky things all hither and yon.

random thoughts:
1) wow, STEEL wheels? geez, in my day (late 1970s), we had thankfully progressed to better materials. those things must've been LOUD. no wonder everyone around them was distracted!
2) the mean lady with the gravel: plus ca change....
3) that headstand trick was kickass!
4) when they rode their boards under the truck, i was thinking, "hey, i used to ride like that sometimes!" -- but then they smoothly got up while still moving, and i thought, "day-ummm, i could NEVER do that, though." props!
5) that bike girl shoulda watched where she was going. she could have hurt someone!

Andy Warhol perfume
October 23, 2007 2:48pm
i would think that a perfume named after the factory would smell like a combination of paint fumes, cigarette smoke, booze, sweat, and the smell given off by the velvet underground's cranked-up amplifiers. either way, i'm sure andy would totally love this.

Dumbledore is gay -- Rowling
October 20, 2007 10:39am
being gay, and having dumbledore be one of my favorite characters, i can (uh, excuse the pun) go both ways on this one:
on one hand, i love that she even mentioned that he is, because it shows kids that it's not a big deal to her. it sets a good example. then again, like #2 above says, how courageous of her to reveal this AFTER the books are done. she had seven books to do it, really, but i agree that he was far to dapper to be NOT gay. maybe we should have just clued in.
to be honest, early on, lupin was the PERFECT gay analogy character, in fact, in the azkaban book (and movie), the subtext is very clear. but then she went and paired him up (ludicrously out of the blue, i think) with tonks.
upon further reflection, i also kind of feel bad about this revelation because it's another example of the "if your character is gay, you die" plotline that gets put forth all to often. that is NOT a good example.

i have that "internet ouija board" shirt, and i totally love it. i can't believe this guy has any sort of case. that owl's been around for years online, and he freely posted it online in the first place, didn't he? what did he expect? and wouldn't his *lawyer* be contacting the t-shirt guy, anyway? i smell a get rich quick scheme...
Van Halen: recorded Jump goof at concert
October 19, 2007 12:27pm
ouch. ouch, ouch, OUCH. that was painful to listen to, for sure. what i found MORE painful, though, is just how sad it is to see them performing that song at their age. poor eddie robotically doing his jump at the same point in the music every time it rolls around, and diamond dave having no money maker to shake, or the even energy to shake it if he did, apparently.... gah. it's all just sad. leave me to my memories, please!
VinylDisc hybrid plays on turntables or optical drives
October 19, 2007 8:22am
yay, something that combines the worst of both technologies. and what about the speed issues? CDs spin really fast, and their spindles are much larger than the spindles on conventional turntables, which also spin much slower. are they selling a pop-in adaptor for each disc, too?

Phone fingers keep iPhone from being smudged
October 18, 2007 11:56am
well, i pound away quite quickly on my iphone, and it's because i spent more than a "few minutes" letting the software get used to how i type. now, i am quick enough to do what i have to do. i don't really care about how fast some kid in japan types.
i've carried my iphone in my pocket as long as they've been on the market, since i purchased mine on day 1 -- there's very few people in the world who can say they have carried it for longer. most of the damage claims i have seen online and other places are due to circumstances NO phone should be expected to survive (crunched in the mechanics of a recliner, run over, etc.), and most were just people being careless. if you don't treat your expensive piece of technology right, you deserve to pay to fix it.
as for the battery, it's rechargeable. in all the hours of use i've had with it, with movies, online and offline use, and using the phone itself, i've never had a problem with the battery life.
ok, i'm done.

Artist gets probation for building secret mall apartment
October 3, 2007 12:59pm
thanks for the clarification, johnny teapot -- i am impressed that they paid for all that, and i feel better about the whole thing as a whole, i suppose
that being said, i guess i'd be more willing to consider it "Art" (with a capital "A") if it were better explained as to what they were trying to show with this project: that it's possible to live solely on stuff bought at a mall? that malls are notorious space-wasters? that our mall security setup is weak and full of holes?
hmm...

Artist gets probation for building secret mall apartment
October 2, 2007 3:27pm
what's not mentioned anywhere that i can see (unless i missed it) is how they got all the stuff: did they pay for it? swipe it? dig it out of dumpsters? a combination from the above? if they paid for all that, i'm impressed, but i find myself doubting they did. still, it is quite amazing that they hauled all that stuff up into that space unnoticed, and remained unnoticed, for four years! the artistic statement may be suspect, but the accomplishment is solid.

as yet another person who grew up in denver (littleton, actually) in the 70s, i have to agree with so many others here who have said that it was THE cool place to go for a birthday. i have very strong memories of casa bonita from back then. (can anyone else here sing the jingle? do they still have the *same* jingle, i wonder? why mess with perfection?)
i also concur that the food is awful. but that's not why we go there, now is it?
