DHL's "Biggest Drawing" GPS stunt is fiction
May 28, 2008 8:14am
If DHL had any sense of humor, they'd now add arbitrary lat/long coordinates to the valid ways you can specify an address for them.

I think this is the first thing associated with TED I've seen where my initial response was "what a load of crap".

Zojirushi Rizo: The Rice Cooker That Will Convince the West?
February 20, 2008 9:26am
The risotto function is hopefully a longer-cooking version of the congee (porridge) setting on their regular fuzzy-logic rice cookers.
I have one of those, and it's pretty easy to make very very passable risotto using two cycles of the porridge mode, stirring once every 15 minutes or so. No, it's not traditional risotto, but it's good, and the texture is close. Given the drastic reduction in effort, it's defintely worth it.
Here's how you do it. Saute some onions, or mushrooms, or whatever you're adding, in a tablespoon or so of oil, in a large pan on the stove. As they get close to done, add risotto rice, stir to coat, and cook until slightly translucent (3-4 minutes). Transfer the whole thing to the rice cooker, and add 3 cups of chicken stock per cup of rice. Put it on the porridge mode, and stir every 15 minutes or so. When done, reset it and turn it on again, again stirring every 15 minutes or so. (On the model I have, I have to let it cool first before it will start again.). After the second cycle, the liquid should be completely absorbed - if not, then let it sit for 10 minutes or so. Stir in some butter, parmesan, salt, and pepper, and serve.
The Surprisingly Thoughtful Design of a Cheap Camcorder
February 20, 2008 9:14am
While the design is certainly cool, the picture quality on the Flip camera I tried out was absolutely abysmal. It might be "VGA quality", but resolution isn't the whole story. The images it produced were blocky and VERY noisy.
If they'd put a better lens and sensor into it (even if they charged a little more), I might consider it.
Macworld's Best of the Rest

This statement about the Eye-Fi is incorrect: "You can even configure the card to upload straight to a photo sharing website like Flickr or Fotki (via a trip to your computer first, unfortunately)". Mine uploads photos to my flickr account when my computer is sleeping. The Eye-Fi connects to the Eye-Fi server to do those uploads, not to your desktop. Of course, this also means that if the Eye-fi server goes down or they take down the server, the wifi capability of the card is essentially useless. Even in that case, it will still function as a normal 2GB SD card (albeit an incredibly power draining one). However, it doesn't look like they're going away anytime soon, as they're well funded, the product looks like it's getting good reviews, and Lexar is licensing the tech.
The Macbook Air is Not a Sub-Notebook
January 15, 2008 8:48pm
It is unclear exactly what the target market for the Macbook Air is.
I'm also concerned that this is the first step towards the ipodification of their laptop line. I like laptops with at least some user upgradeable components.

Lowepro SlingShot Shoulder Bag for Cameras

Argh - this bag would be perfect for me, but I find the chirality weird. I'm right handed, but I don't want to swing around to the left to get my camera.
The Tamrac Velocity bags do it right, but they're not as compact and don't have the weather shield.

Also, the comment about the negative space is incorrect. It would be the negative space making the shape of the glass if the liquid went in the space between the frame and the bulb, but that would be rather pointless since you wouldn't be able to see it (although, if you could fill both of them, you could use two drinks of different colors, which might be nice). As it is, this isn't negative space, it's just the same glass suspended within another glass.

I'd thought that one of the things that would distinguish a boingboing gadget blog from other gadget blogs would be the total absence of phrases like "And, for today, let's not even get into the privacy and human-rights implications.".
I'm disappointed that that's not the case.

I made the mistake of buying a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000, which many people have claimed to be Mac compatible (which uses some sort of universal webcam standard), but it crashed my Mac Pro repeatedly. I've since replaced it with a Samsung LCD panel with built-in webcam, which works nicely.
