US terrorist watchlist now has more than 1,000,000 names
July 15, 2008 4:05pm
we're right on schedule with the myths!
from "http://www.tsa.gov/blog/2008/07/myth-buster-tsas-watch-list-is-more.html"
(the last line kind of leaves a creepy aftertaste)
"MYTH: The ACLU's math estimates that there will be 1 million people on government watch lists this July.
BUSTER: Assumptions about the list are just plain wrong. While a September 2007 report may have said that there are 700,000 records on the terrorist watch list and it was growing by an average of 20,000 per month, that is not the same as the number of individuals on the watch lists. A new "record" is created for every alias, date-of-birth, passport and other identifying information for watch listed suspects. The ACLU does not account for the name-by-name scrub that took place in the Fall of 2007 by all government agencies involved with the lists through the Terrorist Screening Center. This review reduced the no-fly and selectee lists by almost 50 percent and eliminated records of individuals that no longer pose a threat."
hmm . . . seems like there is one way to get off the list . . .
FBI looking for vegan potluck terrorists
May 21, 2008 3:11pm
Although I hope what Theresa says is the standard FBI operating procedure, I was horrified for days by this article in Elle (of all places) where they used an untrained girl to infiltrate a group of kids for years, one fell in love with her, and some sketchy details follow . . .

Nelson Mandela and the ANC are on the US terrorist watchlist and need waivers to enter the country
May 6, 2008 6:10pm
"Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., called ANC members' inclusion on watch lists a "bureaucratic snafu" and pledged to fix the problem."
SNAFU - He's so right! Situation is normal.
Accused penis thieves captured

My favorite American urban legends around penis shrinking were with Mountain Dew. Did anyone else have these growing up? It was that yellow #5 . . .
Smoking ban workaround in bars: Hold "theater nights"
February 25, 2008 5:51pm
Nebraska just passed a statewide smoking ban this week, and the theatre exception has already been shut down.
However, the best commentary I have heard on this subject come from mys sister, a chemist, and non-smoker. Our state laws require that employers supply the necessary safety equipment to deal with harmful chemicals found at the workplace. Dealing with chemicals, she encounters this hazard everyday. However, what safety gear she wears is optional.
Now, while i might find the wearing of gas masks enchanting, and others might say it's just silly. This is the only responsibility of the state or the business.

Thank you Douglas, for cramming big ideas into small blog posts, making the detractors at "big corporate jobs" think without a unicorn chaser, and for taking steps in general.
What I would like to see is something like a multimedia library of how-to's with each document having a discussion section. Since it seems what you are advocating is generally tip-sharing on social causes, it would seems a multi-media how-to would be a starting point?
My one concern about radio is that many of us use computers in places we cannot (or should not) have sound. Plus the whole time restriction thing.
I do agree with #39 though, about starting small. That is one of the things that has made BB so successful, by growing branches where the light was shining brightest. That principle can be applied to all the conversations of "why don't we just get together and do something." When asking for participation, you have to expect and encourage mutation. so, my advice is just start something, and trust that the people who have food will share.
much love, and thanks for being my newest bookmark.
