Hot...Rock? Hot Rock!
January 3, 2008 11:21am
I went to an ishiyaki restaurant in Frankfurt, Germany. It was a Japanese theme restaurant that had cooking stones on the tables and you ordered a meat and vegetable platter and cooked them on the hot stones and dipped them in sauces. It reminded me of shabu-shabu except there was a hot cooking stone instead of a pot.
Phil Torrone visits the Tsukiji fish market
November 21, 2007 1:15pm
I worked there part-time during the busiest time of the year, new years eve. I worked in a store specializing in bluefin tuna used in sushi restaurants. I held frozen bluefin tuna with my bare hands while another senior hand expertly sawed it into sections. Sushi restaurant owners/workers would buy their bluefin tuna and we would saw it into sections and wrap it in paper secured with rubber bands. The purchased bluefin tuna was either picked up or delivered to the respective clients that day. This all took place in the early morning hours. I left for work around 3 AM. I got paid really well for the short hours of work. The only thing I didn't like was the stubborn fish oil that lingered in my hands for a week. One night, I ran into the owner, and was treated to some sashimi in one his client's sushi restaurants. It was the first time that I ever tasted sashimi (raw fish) and I had lived in Japan for 12 years. It literally melted in my mouth and was quite delicious. I learned my lesson that night, not to resist trying different foods in other countries.
Consumer Reports corrects "restless leg" drug TV ad
November 12, 2007 12:10pm
CBS Sunday Morning did a show dedicated to medicine. They had a segment where they filmed an ad company doing a brainstorming session to come up with abbreviations for an illness in order to sell a drug. They also mentioned that only in New Zealand and the USA is it legal for drug companies to advertise prescription medicine via TV. I keep thinking of how much the doctors are getting for prescribing these so called cures which require a cocktail of other medicines to keep the side effects in check? Although you can't really just blame them since the patients demand these drugs after watching the ads on TV.
Hey TiVo, Ditch the Subscription!
November 12, 2007 12:36am
I'm still waiting for the Tivo software option from Cox Communications and Tivo. But I'm afraid that they will raise my monthly digital cable bill. I've read that Comcast has recently started offering the Tivo option.
