"5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal."
So two Satanists can never mate because they will both sit around waiting for the other to make the first move? This is not a good way to grow your ranks folks...
Although from what I have heard second hand about old Anton the mating signal was pretty much "breathing".
Tipping-point skeptic says that super-Influencers are overrated

Since it's semi-on topic I will recommend reading Connie Wilson's charming novel "Bellweather" which is an amusing take on researching trying to understand why things become popular and how fads start.

I think there is a very, very good reason tha Stamps.com failed. The people most likely to find out about stamps.com had stopped using stamps! I do almost everything via the internet and have for over 10 years. My bills, my correspondence, everythigng gets where it needs to go without the postal system. I haven't purchased a physical stamp in...let's see...4 years. I used one stamp, and gave the other 9 to my cube neighbor.

It would be interesting to see the numbers for Unbox, just because it has the TIVO-to-the-TV link aspect going for it. I wonder if that makes much of a difference in sales?
My Wildly Inaccurate Look at Movie Distribution in 2007
January 24, 2008 8:46am
Hmmm...based on my wildy inaccurate extrapolations from the recent MPAA correction memo, internet piracy is worth about $1.65 billion for 2007. Using your cost of $16 for a dvd that's what...103 million units?

"I find Mythbusters sort of boring. I'm not sure why, either. On paper it's totally up my alley. I think it's because the hosts are sort of dreary."
You, sir, have no soul. I find Adam and Jamie charming. I will not comment on Kari Byron, because I would probably get in trouble with my girlfriend.
In all honesty, I can see why you might not like it if you only watched a few episodes, but it (and by it, I mean the people and the experiments) really grows on you after a few episodes.
Pill to "improve first-person shooter performance"
January 17, 2008 2:19pm
I now await the day that a school shooter takes a handful of these things before going on their rampage. After all, if videogames are murder training simulators then the abilities granted by these pills should transfer directly from the virtual to the real world.
Or not.

Random Thought on Wiimote and Remote Sex
January 9, 2008 1:07pm
There are some possible problems that arise BECAUSE you have 3 axis controls combined with a lack of visual feedback for (as Lia put it) Player One. This could easily lead to the "Watch where you're putting that thing" problems that are frequently encountered by drunks and fumbling teens, and possibly some nasty bruises for Player Two. I'm not saying something couldn't be built like this, I just think that it's not going to be as cheap or easy as you might think. Now, one axis and rotation? that I could see being done, though still you are looking at a lot of money (heck, a vanilla machine costs in the $500 range...so 'm told).
On a completely unrelated note, Rez is apparently coming out for Xbox 360 and will support multiple standard Xbox 360 wireless rumble-enabled controls instead of the original, completely non-sexual haptic feedback device. Completely. Unrelated.
Perry Bible Fellowship webcomic book does good!

Cross in Huckabee's new TV ad?
December 19, 2007 10:32am
"In all seriousness, what possible difference does it make whether the commercial director saw the bookcase cross and included it deliberately in the frame or didn't?"
The theory behind the secret cross message is this - Evangalicals use a plain, undecorated cross in their death worship cult. On the other hand, Mormons do not display or wear crosses at all, while Catholics prefer their crosses with a bloodied hippie nailed to it.
By displaying a plain cross in the ad, Huckabee is sending he message to Evangalicals that he is really one of them, while Romney and Giuliani are members of false religions, and probably eat babies when they are not busy worshipping satan or the Pope.
Is that what he is doing with the cross? Is the cros really even there? I could not say, since I am not a member of any of these wacky modern day Mithras cults.
Neil Gaiman helps fan propose to girlfriend through book inscription

I have to say that not only am I impressed by Neil's awesomeness to his fans, but also, that Morpheus sketch he did in the signing is freaking awesome! I think of him as a writer, but the sketch is a wonderful distillation of the character's graphic essence! God, I hope that I can grow up to be Neil!

Slate's Jack Shafer on Rolling Stone drug war article
December 5, 2007 1:03pm
"If he were maximum dictator, wouldn't it be better to just end the drug war?"
I know! Totally sucky use of maximum dictatorship. There's gotta be at least three things that would take priority over making a small sub-set of the media read an article, including, as you mention, actually ending the war on drugs.

While I have never had Hot Dr Pepper, I first discovered Hot Lemon Coke at a Chinese restaurant that used to be at 19th & Lincoln in SF. Ordered it more or less on a dare; turns out, it's delicious. The other odd drink on the menu, Salty Lemonade? No one was willing to try that.

Sputnik in a biscuit tin challenge

Bah! A biscuit tin indeed. Either fit it into an Altoids tin, or don't bother. If someone can do it in a Smint case, THAT would be impressive.
I wonder if I can fit a dog into an Altoids tin by November to commemorate the Sputnik 2 launch?
...crap, now I am sad. Laika was a good brave dog.

I would be more than willing to knock 3 hours and twenty minutes off of the Iraq war to cover this. At the current estimate of $100K per minute that is all it would take. Seems like a really good deal to me.

Total Music: Lifetime Music Subscriptions from Universal & Co.
October 12, 2007 8:44am
Stupid. Also dumb. Now, offer a $5 per month subscription service that I can use with ALL of my devices and that provides more than Universal music and I would consider it. But tacking $90 on to the price of each of my music playing devices? That's a great deal! For Universal.

Pink Shotgun from Remington
October 1, 2007 12:17pm
So, after spending a few years making toy guns in bright colors so that cops don't shoot kids with realizstic looking toy guns by accident, we are now going to make real guns that look like toys. There is something wrong this this picture.

MIT student arrested for entering Boston airport with "fake bomb"
September 21, 2007 12:09pm
"Personally my biggest worry is she didn't even go through security. How far out are these powers going to extend. The roads around the airports? The city around the roads? wtf?"
Actually, if I were a terrorist just about the only interesting airline related target these days is the line going into security. You have hundreds of people closely packed together, and you, obviously, don't need to go through security to get to it.
Ever sicne they sealed up the cockpits of airplanes and people became aware of the possibility to suicide hijackers actulayyu oding anything on an airplane became much less attractive.
Airport screening is fighting yesterdays battle.
There is NO WAY to protect against a determined suicide bomber who just wants to blow him/herself up in the middle of a lot of people. Protect the airports and malls become a target, protect the malls and sporting events become a target.
Everything you go through at the airport is just theater that accomplishes nothing.
Ramadan in space
September 21, 2007 11:54am
I don't understand this flexibility - either God said "You have to do things this way" or he didn't. Being in space should not be an excuse to ignore what are supposedly ineffable, supernatural laws. If god says that you need to perform some ritual, or observe somke arbitary rule, and you can't do that in space, then obviously god doesn't want you going into space.
