I hope there is just a Boing Boing robot garbling comments with Pg-13 language. I would hate to think real person was actually found my comment censor-worthy.

Ben Stein: "…Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people."
Just because Stein has cool glasses and a lovely monotonic voice, doesn't mean he isn't capable of being a special kind fool.
The only thing sillier than religious freaks like Stein are the people who defend them.

This place sounds like AM radio today. One could argue easily that Ayers over-reacted to the politcal climate of his youth. In light all the evil we approve daily, through our complacency, how the hell can you waste one iota of energy scorning a man who fought passionately for his ideals, bloodlessly?
I just don't get it.
Racist signs in Thailand

It's just the owner's way of saying that he's not running the kind of place where it's okay to bring prostitutes.
That's all. It's not mean spirited.
This is a different world over here. Our western templates can not be used to understand what is going on. I have been here one year and I am still confused.
In many ways, in spite of its reputation, Thailand is a very old-fashioned place sexually. For instance pornography is not legal. I just finished watching "Shoot'em Up" and all of the breasts were blacked-out.
When I use my neighbor's toaster, she always leaves the front door open.
When the lady comes to get my laundry, she always brings one of the property's attendants.
When I spend time alone with a colleague in her apartment, I am warned to not mention this to the other co-workers because of social implications.
It is also very common for Thai girls to bring friends on the first few dates.
I could go on, but the point is that when a proprietor says no Thai in the bedroom, they are simply making an effort to maintain a traditional Thai environment, and no way, no how would a Thai person not understand the intent.

Texas students shut down highway and march 7 miles to vote in gerrymandered district

Two more stats from U.S. News: 46% work on the campus. 25% of students do not have cars.

At #10: Never bet that a Texas town has public transportation. Even in Houston, there are huge swaths of the city that are inaccessible without a car.
But if you really want to bet those whiny students could have spent an hour on the bus to go vote, then you would lose. According to the U.S. News and World Report, no public transportation serves the campus.

Just a note because I don't think the linked article mentioned this: Prairie View A&M, is a historically a black university, and today remains overwhelmingly so.
It's a pretty good guess they will not be voting for McCain in the general.
At #17: Everything in politics is run by individual constituencies, this is especially true in small Texas towns. The only question is to what extent they can act without impunity.

FBI buries docs showing US officials stole nuke secrets?

I never cease to be amazed by some people's limited range of reaction. Either, when presented with a "truth", they either have the "Well-whats-new" or the "Well-if-that-was-true-there-would-be-an-outrage."
There are degrees of fucked-upness, as I hope Bush has taught us well by now.
And how can we expect others to preserve the capacity for outrage, when we ourselves have lost it on our way to becoming world-wise, system-savvy.
I again encourage you to delve into this story. It really is quite something.
FBI buries docs showing US officials stole nuke secrets?

Hey Robot Friends,
It's real nice that you know enough history and current events that being glum about some under-reported fucked up shit is oh-so-easy.
However, I ask you to put down your joysticks for a minute and take a serious look at this story. It's roots have been simmering in the independent media for some time now, and this revelation by the foreign press could very well be the kick that's needed to put this story where it needs to be: on every front page.
I will say this in an effort to inspire something beyond apathy. The leading character in this saga is a former FBI CI agent by the name of Sibel Edmonds. She claims to have firsthand knowledge that Richerd Pearle, Marc Grossman, and Richard Feith, among others are actively involved in the black market of drugs, weapons, and nuclear secrets in collusion with the Turkish government/ mafia. Sounds like another nutcase, I know. But here's the thing the State department shut down her criminal investigation and gave her a gag order in the name of national security. All she has asked for is the right to testify. She was even called to give a disposition by in the lawsuit filed by the families of 911 and was forbidden to do so in the name of State Secrets. Two U.S. senators, the Office of Inspector General have stated on the record that based upon the evidence they were presented that Edmond was telling the truth. Her accounts have also been corroborated by numerous FBI agents.
We are talking about a criminal enterprise involving our highest officials and the world's most dangerous criminals for the sole purpose of profit.
All the investigations have been done. This story could be the wedge that cracks some light on the classified evidence. All we need is a good dose of outrage and we could have some of our biggest neocon assholes in prison.
I know, I know... I'm a dreamer.
P.S. Valerie Plame was the CIA agent investigating the nuclear secrets part of this mess, just so you know.
No friends yet.

Perplexing comment. An honor system does not mean one can operate dishonorably. It's just a system in which there are no formal mechanisms for enforcing good behavior.
