Washing machine/toilet combo

March 24, 2008 6:37am

I'm still bitter that my electric dryer/shower combo did not win any awards.

Rudimentary math skills among fish

March 22, 2008 10:22am

I for one welcome our new water breathing overlords.

Creationist documentary premiere bars science blogger, accidentally lets in Richard Dawkins

March 22, 2008 8:00am

Darwin caused the Holocaust? Don't forget that the majority of those who carried out the killings were likely Christians.

The ability to be cruel is not exclusive to any particular religious affiliation.

Mark Dion: art, science, and natural history

I like the steampunk Cray computer in the center of the picture.

One House at a Time: Katrina rebuild project

March 7, 2008 6:12pm

RAMPANTIDIOCY, Pearlington is not on the mouth of the Mississippi. It was flooded by storm surge, not by the river.

This town would have had the same destruction if the Mississippi river never existed. It is relatively far inland, but has several channels leading to the Gulf of Mexico.

Starbucks' formula has changed, let us count the (three) ways.

What do they mean by using a new "mix" in the espresso machine?

I thought the only thing required to make espresso was ground coffee and water? Are they cutting it with Soylent Green?

Reg Barber custom espresso tamper

February 27, 2008 7:20pm

The tamper makes it easier to get a firm, even pack. My high end espresso machine came with a cheap plastic tamper that did not cover the entire area of the basket.

If you have the Kitchen Aid "Bubble Gum Machine" grinder, it can easily be hacked to produce a finer grind. This will improve the thickness of your crema.

Belt buckle with integrated toolkit

February 25, 2008 6:42am

Provide essential tools while preventing plumber's crack. This company deserves some kind of award.

Library waives fees in exchange for Dance Dance Revolution play

February 18, 2008 6:16pm

Government, if you're reading this, I'll take more libraries and fewer tax abatements.

Some Flickr users wary of a MSFT takeover

February 4, 2008 6:40am

Why will it be bad if MS owns Flickr?

There are several innovative things Flickr does, which go against Microsoft's general proprietary philosophy. Among them:

1. Open, documented, standards-based web API. This allows easy creation of third party apps. There are Flickr tools that run on Linux, and even a Perl API.

2. Unlimited numbers of uploads for Pro members

3. Ad-free content for Pro members (Does MS offer *anything* ad-free on the web?)

4. Creativity with photo licensing

5. ActiveX/Flash crap not required for viewing

6. Tools allowing backup of your account content to your PC, preventing lock-in

Number 6 will probably be the first to go, so start backing up your photos now.

Organlegging nurse sold diseased corpsemeat for dental implants, knees and disks

January 31, 2008 5:33pm

Glad I didn't go with the cadaver graft for my last knee surgery.

SL: Huckabee Center for Liberation and Housing of Spermatazoan-Americans

January 23, 2008 4:27pm

If the media covered Huckabee's interesting views like they do Romney's Mormonism, he would be laughed out of the race.

Or else would win in a landslide.

Intolerance populism is election gold.

Beautiful high dynamic range photo from Japan

January 19, 2008 8:54am

This image looks great, but most HDR images are plain awful.

HDR is way overused on Flickr. It's the same folks who add artificial frames and false vignetting to their photos of stop signs.

It is possible to get stunning photos by using careful exposure and a polarizing filter. Shooting when the light is most dramatic (morning and evening) helps too.

Handpresso: bike pump espresso machine works without electricity

January 16, 2008 3:08pm

Comparing French press coffee to espresso is like comparing Cabernet to Scotch. They are both excellent when done right, but each has its own distinct role.

Police ordered to pull over people doing nothing wrong

December 18, 2007 3:29pm

I appreciate this gesture by the police, but I don't have time for such pleasantries.

The next time an officer tries to pull me over, I will simply keep driving.

How could refusing an unwanted gift be wrong?

Texas science ed. officer forced to resign by Bushie hack for promoting evolution

December 10, 2007 5:44am

I went to public schools in a state with the lowest education rank in the nation: Mississippi.

As a father-to-be now living in Texas, I'm wondering if my child would get a better education back in MS.

If there is one thing the current Texas government will listen to, it is big business. Corporations, consider this news before you decide to locate in Texas.

Ghost towel

December 6, 2007 3:57pm

Yes, I too ruined many a bedsheet in my younger days.

Pocket protector museum

October 16, 2007 4:34pm

My alma mater is finally recognized in BB and, alas, for this.
