Takuan@18: Literally, "curly one" or just plain "curly."
If anyone can find a better-quality photo, I'll translate the full text.

I note no one mentioned that the actual mortality rate in animals from foot and mouth is somewhere around 2-5%. The main reason the herds in the UK were slaughtered?
Lowered milk production. They weren't going to be as profitable.

Hodur@9: Thanks, I stand corrected.
TNH@13: I'm too late to answer the actual question, so for bonus points I'll ask: Do you know why bottom of the barrel supermarket cheese is orange?

I'm with Gerta. Where's the news story? Aracuna hens lay green or light-blue eggs all the time, and I can buy green eggs by the carton at the local health food store.

Actually, Farhad has it wrong; clearly he hasn't been to sufficiently dingy cities. Even the local Mall-Wart (which is a monstrosity of a SuperCenter, serving the nearest three counties or so) manages to bring in *either* parsley or cilantro, but never both, and you may as well sacrifice a goat or two to the herb gods if you're hoping for basil or rosemary.

In similar annoyance-related news, Embarq (previously Sprint) has enabled a typo correction and DNS error redirect "service." Your mistyped URLs are now an opportunity to make some money off of your eyeball bandwidth.
The service does give an opt-out option, which is cookie-based. If you happen to clean out your cookies on a regular basis, though... Tough luck.
Making chemical snakes
November 12, 2007 8:31pm
Okay, here we go:
1. Pour a mound of sand through a sieve, make an indentation in the top, and pour alcohol into the indentation -- as much as possible without causing the mound to dissolve.
2. Prepare the reaction mass: Mix thoroughly 1 part baking soda to four parts confectioners' sugar.
Place the resulting mixture into the indentation in the sand mound. Ideally you should make the clump of reaction mass slightly smaller than the indentation, or the snake will turn out to be a mutant with horns and extra appendages.
Light the mixture, and watch. Soon, you'll see little black balls beginning to appear, and then, the snake!
Warning: Do not, under any circumstances, pour more alcohol in after the original dose burns through. The sand will at that point be hot enough to evaporate the first few drops of alcohol, which are liable to ignite, lighting the stream of alcohol and from there the container in your hands.
(This is just the first snake; if there's interest I can translate the rest. Also, how the devil does one translate "Раскален"?)

Electro@15, Knightx@16,
Would you be so kind as to define "art" for me? Separately or through a joint effort; I'm not picky.
Boing Boing tv: same old BB, but with talkies.
October 3, 2007 8:30am
So far, the space of a month, we've seen two major announcements, for a total of four new things (bb site redesign, the return of comments, and the bb Gadgets blog, and now bbTV).
Will the trend continue? Is bb poised to challenge Google in the latter's quest for world dominance?
Stay tuned for next week's episode of bbTV to find out :)
