Oregon: our laws are copyrighted and you can't publish them

This is a point raised on the corresponding reddit page, at

"Does this mean that if another state implements the same laws as Oregon, they can sue the other state for copyright infringement?"

US economy is in scary shape, no matter what Hank Paulson sez

April 14, 2008 5:33am

When someone gives up looking for work, the government no longer considers them unemployed–thus the huge discrepancy in the two figures.

I do want to point out that all governments measure it this way. Unemployed is the fraction of the labor force that does not have a job; and the labor force are the people who have a job or are looking for a job. Otherwise, what of, for example, stay-at-home parents? People in jail?

I think it's worth understanding the different numbers (for example, much of the difference in unemployment rates btw. Europe and the US can be explained by, in my opinion, the difference in incarceration rates) but I think it's a bit extreme to say that it is willfully deceptive. That said, I think how unemployment rates are calculated is an important piece of information that people should know.

Republican businessman funds pro-marijuana film

Gee...I didnt [sic] know it was bush that made pot illegal.

That's an unfair read of what was said. The truth is, under the Bush administration, the feds have ignored state laws that legalize marijuana and pursued people just like her. Her comment is completely fair.

Roachbot / Walter Robot

November 27, 2007 5:08pm

"something less boring than staring at blinking LEDs?"

the blinking LEDs act as a kind of radar screen, as i understand it. they essentially display information about the proximity of objects in a manner that the roach is compelled to act on. essentially.

so that whole contraption, LEDs, wheels, and all, could be put in some kind of maze, i would imagine.

Land grab case in Boulder incites anger and protests

November 22, 2007 10:14am

I maintain the only reason this seems obviously 'unfair' is that there is only one right in America that we don't even think about compromising: the right of private property. Every other right is slowly being moved into the category of privilege; but not private property. That right is so sacrosanct, we can't even imagine life without it.

Why is that, do you think? Why is that the one and only right we don't touch?

Kinda makes you think.

@jimh, others, on disemvoweling

i also find disemvoweling difficult/impossible to read. I understand this is not my decision, but I would be in favor of pinkifying the background of 'bad' comments or something like that. Or, the way slashdot/reddit/etc does it, where the comment says something like:

[comment hidden, click to reveal comment]

That serves the purpose of punishing offenders without making the comment unreadable.

Flying Spaghetti Monster to star at American Academy of Religion

Excuse me, but religious parody?

I'm insulted by that hate-filled, anti-religious tract. It's garbage like that, that alienates the Community of Faith from academia and the Left. Insulting and demeaning.

Climate change denialists winning the race for "Best Science Blog"

November 8, 2007 11:12am

rambunctiousrob, November 8, 2007 7:49 AM

The reason that human-driven climate change has become such a popular cause isn't that it's correct, it's that people want to believe the fate of the planet is dependent on their actions.

I find this part of the debate completely mysterious. Who cares whether it is human-caused? Human-caused is distinct from human-preventable. I care whether it's human-preventable, but I couldn't care less whether it is human-caused.

I imagine a meteor flying toward the earth, on the verge of destroying all human life, a la "Armageddon" or "Deep Impact," and this group would say "don't do anything about the meteor! It's not human-caused!"

CNN's Glenn Beck: "people who hate America" losing homes in So CA wildfires

October 23, 2007 1:55pm

@Bonzo: I'm sure Glenn would agree, that if those are actual needs, the private market should be rushing to fill those needs. If that's not happening, they must not be "needs." QED.

CNN's Glenn Beck: "people who hate America" losing homes in So CA wildfires

October 23, 2007 10:49am

I think the evidence that they hate America is that they are relying on the nanny state to rescue them from fire instead of trusting the private market. QED.

"please no slavery flames--the Civil War was about money, not slavery--except that of the Confederacy by the Union." NoneSuch

1) What do you mean by "about"?

2) You're a liar. You may not realize it, but that's a convenient falsehood that the South has talked about for a long, long time. It was 'about' slavery. It really was.

Lessig's anti-corruption lecture -- alpha version

October 14, 2007 3:29pm

i agree with Noen's response to Pyros. I had some similar objections. I think it is important to note that Lessig is presenting to an audience of fellow legal academics. Of course it sounds pretentious to people not in that community. I, on the other hand, as a academic, found the argument w/r/t my role in shaping thought to be very persuasive.

Pryos wrote (and noen quoted): "The truth is that people do not need help from elites. Most of the problems our government currently experiences could be solved if the mechanisms for expanding popular power were created and implemented."

I think it is telling that the second sentence is written in the passive voice. I'll leave my critique of those sentences at that.

I found Lessig's lecture a very persuasive and broad discussion of the nature of corruption; particularly, as I said before, with regard to my own role and responsibilities. I encourage anyone to listen to it, but particularly academics.
