Macworld's rules for buying Macs

May 14, 2008 10:47pm

Somehow I would think that Mac world, which probably gets a lot of ad dollars from Apple wants you to buy a new one.
When I became a serious musician in my teens I used to read lots of music magazines and take the reviews and advice seriously until I found out just how underhanded and low these magazines were about ad money. They had a pay up or we will sink you policy towards music equipment advertisers.
The Mac Pro is great as a recording computer, the best portable out there.

1939 marital rating scale for wives

Aren't crooked Ho's looked on with favor by many guys these days?
I saw some in a rap video the other day.

Excellent 60s underground internet radio station

May 8, 2008 2:28pm

This was a great time for music .
Lothar and the hand People is my addition to the list of great late 60s music. They were on the Capitol label and released two LPs and 4 45s.
This was one of the rare periods when music was actually art and was more independent of business and marketing.
Thank goodness that the internet is around to offer up free interesting music from around the world or everything would be artless rubbish like Hanah Blahtanna, Britney smears or the talentless rap where few can even play any instruments. It is too bad that the fidelity of online music is poor.
This era of the late 60s also features full fidelity sound instead of the awful MP3 average 128 Kbbs. Low dynamic music like rap and top 40 don't need more than this .
Digital sound is good at 24 bits and 96khz but it is rare to get anything like this.
Thanks for turning me onto this cool web site.

Robot mimics human voice with music instruments—weirdly

May 7, 2008 8:55am

I always forget that non-musicians don't know all the cool stuff technology has given us to play with.
This is certainly cool but us musicians have been messing with samplers and midi for decades.
Remember the cheap Casio with the sampler in it?
We used to follow the cat around to get as many meow sounds as possible.
I love using found sounds to write songs with.
Technology is great stuff.

Return of the Moon-Nazis in Creative Commons-licensed film from Star Wreck creators

May 6, 2008 10:12pm

These guys better give some credit to Heinlein since the plot is exactly the plot of Rocket ship Galileo.
It was one of Heinlein's young adult books, so it involved Teenagers going to the Moon and finding that the Nazis had escaped to the Moon to keep up their plan for world domination.
It wasn't one of his better books.

DIY tape delay machine is useful, has the look

May 5, 2008 5:21am

I love old echoplex's but a digital delay can simulate tape ,analog and of course digital.
A digital delay is also less costly and durable.

To get a true delay, not just chorus or flanging the distance between tape recorders has to be more than in the picture.
I have seen some pictures of Fripp's with a good 15 feet between tape heads for more of a looper effect.
28 years ago when I began playing guitar seriously and discovered all the cool effects musicians use I got all tingly at the possibilities.
What would a Bach or Mozart have done with stuff like this?
I always wonder what Hendrix or the Beatles, would have done with all of todays effects.

Paying for the London Underground with a dissolved, naked Oyster card

May 5, 2008 4:50am

So terrorists traveling in London should be prepared to spend more cash.
These so called security measures never make anyone more secure, but they sure make everyone less free.

HOWTO keep your laptop from being searched at the border (it's hard)

May 2, 2008 8:50am

My last line sounds like I am the only one fighting for Freedom. Sorry for the pretension.
The EFF and millions, maybe hundreds of millions are fighting to remain Free.
I was referring to the apathetic people who don't pay attention to what Congress or the Courts are doing.
Years ago Frank Zappa made me realize that it is crucial for people to pay attention to government because they make the laws and spend your money.

HOWTO keep your laptop from being searched at the border (it's hard)

May 2, 2008 8:46am

Another waste of time.
Thanks to republicans and their Bush dog corperate friends.
The destruction of American Freedom is almost complete.
Anyone who wants to get some kind of info across borders will, this only annoys good people.
If there is some kind of info which is sensitive it should be protected at the source.
This is akin to book burning.

Not one thing that has been done since 9-11 has made anyone safer but the US government is proving itself to be the greatest threat to Freedom and the American Way of life.
I hope others will join me in fighting to regain what our country was founded on...Freedom, especially from the government.

Ben Stein: "science leads you to killing people"

May 2, 2008 8:29am

More evidence that religion makes people's brains turn to cheese.
This is crazy talk.
Science has made modern life possible.
The abuses of scientific discoveries have mostly been done by business and the military. Scientists I know (and I know hundreds) are more moral because they tend to think deeply and consider all sides of things.
When people adopt the scientific method they finally see what is actually real and are more immune to propaganda.

Trader Joe's Cashew #4, a work of great fine art

May 2, 2008 8:25am

It is nice to see somthing besides jesus or mary in food. Maybe the xtians see a jesus penis.

Amazing how things look like things.

Blue Jeans Cable responds to Monster Cable cease-and-desist with Hundred Hand Slap

April 16, 2008 1:14am

Good on Blue Jean. Monster cables are a waste of money from an engineering standpoint, unless you are NASA or some such.

DMZ Friendly Fire: reinventing war comics, making them better and more important

April 14, 2008 1:11pm

It may be fun fiction but all the Red State folks I know would bow down to the US military instantly and want to attack the Blue States.
The US Military has become so full of Xtian extremists that I could see them starting a holy war against Blue States and trying to convert them ,AKA, Bin Laden, to religious extremism.
general Pat Robertson, colonel Rod Parsley and minister of propaganda John Hagee.

Debating the feasibility of an in-flight liquid bomb

April 4, 2008 8:19am

I work in chem research and did some experiments with 80% Hydrogen peroxide when these guys were first arrested.
We didn't know about the tang but used some things that would decompose the peroxide even faster than Tang.
Our findings were that these guys wouldn't have been able to carry on the amount of peroxide needed for a bomb.
It could have stated a small fire though.
Even some of the souped up peroxides we have in the lab only burst into flame. the combustion is just not fast enough.
If terrorists wanted to kill lots of people they would and could so easily.
A hundred dedicated terrorists could kill thousands of people a day and wouldn't be caught for months.
I won't post any ideas but I am sure you could think of a dozen ways to kill people at random.
People are not being killed so the terrorist thing is WAY over hyped.
The terrorists score a point every time we lose some Freedom. Fear is the mind killer.

Student arrested for shock prank camera

April 4, 2008 8:07am

It would have been ironic if they Tased the kid while arresting him.
The shock gag is unfunny but arresting him for having a deadly weapon is insane.
Anyone with hands has a deadly weapon. Hands can strangle another person.
Now this kid will have a felony arrest on his record for a prank. It could wreck his ability to get a job. he should be happy they didn't put him in Gitmo. Under the so called "Patriot" act shotting a BB gun at a stop sign is considered a terrorist act.
The brain doesn't reach emotional maturity until around age 25. Kids do dumb things.
In my day this would have led to a detention.
I want to see the police, and politicians and other public servants held accountable for their actions, that would set an example that actions have consequences.

Declassified memo authorized US to torture "enemy combatants"

April 3, 2008 7:45am

Americans who support Freedom must continue to fight.
The neoCONs started their rise to power in the mid 1960s.
The wheels of change spin slowly, especially in government, but they do spin.
If Americans who believe in Freedom and prosperity, justice and the rule of law keep fighting we will prevail.
If you get frustrated take a short break.
Never give up. All those who support Freedom are in the right.
