Disneyland bans pictures in its parking lots
April 22, 2008 8:36am
I find this especially amusing as I thought that being a vacation destination Disney would know that pictures might be taken on the property. It seems as if someone may have known this at tone time or another...see they actually created interesting things to see all over the park including the parking lot.
I doubt very seriously if there is actually a rule against photographing the parking lot. I find it more likely, by far, that this is yet another over zealous security creep.

8-year-old boy suspended for sniffing marker

I agree Nick, But I can at least understanding the misconceptions that the school authorities were under. What troubles me is their refusal to now admit they are wrong. Even with clear evidence that they are wrong.

guess I can understand the overcautious and overzealous reaction. We do after all live in a very sue happy society, and better safe than sorry. I think what really bothers me, is that even having a toxicologist report in hand stating that Sharpie fumes are non-toxic, and non-addictive, and not a problem. The people in charge stand their ground. What should happen is a retraction and apology and instead, to "send a clear message" they let the punishment stand, and remove all permanent markers from school property.
The only clear message I am hearing is one of willful ignorance, if we want our children to learn about personal responsibility, we should take responsibility for our actions.

Grom,
I am not sure it's really fair to judge someones political standings based on his sexuality...I don't know Mr. Mosley...But sexual play involving Domination or even specific character roleplay (ie Nazi Themed) does not make it real any more than pretending to be Superman and Lois Lane will give you the ability to fly...

Payday Loan scumbags prey on the elderly, illiterate, poor
February 21, 2008 8:37am
Wow ! There is a special place reserved in hell for these people.
This is a spectacular case...I mean, The payday loan companies and sleazy as the practice may be does serve a particular demographic of people.
That being said, This particular story elevates it to a criminal level. I find it hard to believe that they actually told this person that they would be stealing a majority of his check.

The healthcare industry is getting broken by people needing healthcare? That's backwards thinking...the healthcare industry is already broken...
And no, government officials should not be wasting our time this crap...save you messages and get some work done.

Boom! comics' new series available as downloads on the same day as in stores
January 4, 2008 12:10pm
The free taste is a good approach to get people buying. I don't think it's true that most people that download won't buy. I myself have given a few titles a spin through DBZ. I have found a few I like and go in search of the trades. I enjoy both digital and Paper based products...there are advantages to either...
It is true that that the DVD collections that have been available until recently were at times of a substandard quality as far as scans go. However, they also included all of the adds and letter columns. These things are important in a historical aspect.

Boom! comics' new series available as downloads on the same day as in stores
January 4, 2008 6:07am
Yes, the Marvel Digital comics thing... They went from licensing the titles to be sold as a collection. 0 years of Spider-Man on 1 DVD or 44 Years of Fantastic Four.
These are now sadly discontinued in effort to control the digital market. i have checked into it and talked with people who bought in (for a short time) The comics on offer digitally are for online reading only (bad), While they have have a braod range of titles, the depth is not there. You cannot read a 40 year run of Avengers(bad). The resolution, as stated above sucks(bad). all around not the answer we (The fans of comics) were looking for.
Time to once again describe my dream project.
Maybe Marvel will pay attention.
Marvel Age
A Digital Comic Collection.
We begin with Nov of 1961 (for me the birth of the Modern Marvel Superhero with the publication of Fantastic Four #1. Each disc would hold approx. 1 year of Published Content. The content would be divided into months. We could experience the birth of the marvel age just as kids of that generation did, only without the threat of missing any issues.
I dream of something like this not only as a fan of comics, but as a research tool.
Cheers,
Don

December 13, 2007 6:01am
I can't believe anybody is actually defending the actions of police on this one.
If you find a bag of items, a wallet, a pack of gum, whatever, the ethically correct thing to do would be to return the item to it's proper owner.
IANAL, is it truly against the law to pick up a lost item? That can't even be enforced fairly(as is obvious) Why would we create a law that is simply there to protect people from being careless. If I loose my wallet, I would very much appreciate whoever finds it bringing it back to me, however, I would never expect them to be arrested for picking it up.
What if someone drops a bag of food? Are we then obligated to get that to a police station?

Intelligent Design promotes religion in the classroom. End of debate.
Texas Public Schools being recipients of Federal monies are obliged to follow a separation of church and state the keeps religion and religious ideas from being forced onto students.

@#8 Ken Bines said:By law, state education officials must remain neutral on this topic, and the educators email sent from her official email account for a critical speaker on this topic most likely *was* grounds for termination.
Well one of the problems with that is the fact that it's her Job to be aware of these events and to share these events with other members of the Administration. If you would like to gain a better understanding of the facts behind this case visit this website http://www.texscience.org/reviews/tea-science-director-resigns.htm
In short...
The real reason she was forced to resign is because the top TEA administrators and some SBOE members wanted her out of the picture before the state science standards–the science TEKS–were reviewed, revised, and rewritten next year. Plans are underway by some SBOE members and TEA administrators to diminish the requirement to teach about evolutionary biology in the Biology TEKS and to require instead that biology instructors “Teach the Controversy” about the “weaknesses” of evolution, that is, teach the Creationist-inspired and -created bogus controversy about evolution that doesn’t exist within legitimate science. There are no scientific weaknesses with biological evolution as the natural process is understood by scientists. At the level at which it is taught in high school, evolutionary biology has no weaknesses, gaps, or problems. Therefore, it is duplicitous to pretend such “weaknesses” and “controversy” exist.

Teacher resigns after giving 13-yr-old student copy of Eightball
September 24, 2007 2:02pm
My wife teaches language arts to kids about this age. Isn't 13 a bit young for high school?
Regardless, if, as a parent, my teenager was exposed to something that i felt was inappropriate, i would just return it. I'm not sure I understand why this teacher needs to resign.
We are talking about a High School level English class. It is at this point that we should be asking kids to read at higher levels and finding deeper meanings in texts. One parent complaint should never be the cause of changing reading material available for students.
