Former Seattle Police Chief on the high costs of the drug war

August 15, 2008 4:07pm

@27: You'll also find a lot of evidence that William Randolph Hearst had a lot to do with MJ prohibition as it's friendlier cousin, Hemp, threatened his publishing empire - of which his own paper mills were heavily invested. Controlling a significant portion of media at the time, and controlling the government with cash, he was able to vilify Hemp as an evil scourge, securing his businesses and ensuring the less-than-green paper industry remained tree-based.

seems too hard to come up with anything funnier than those throbbing members over at wired. any joke i could erect would be in vein and they'd surely feel i was giving them the shaft, which would leave me feeling morally flaccid. maybe the rest of you can engorge them with laughter. if so, i bet you'll be beating the fans off with both hands!

priapism!

Ska-toon on Yo Gabba Gabba!

January 21, 2008 2:07pm

Elijah, and other stars of various caliber and alphabet-listing, are often on as part of a dance lesson. Elijah on one end of the spectrum, the Bedazzler-sweater lady on the other. All are excellent and fun.

Yo Gabba Gabba is a wonderful show, and I was very fortunate to have a baby born in time to watch it, as an excuse for me to watch it. It's very well done, and my kid has been beat-boxing (thanks to Biz!) for months now.

Highly recommend it over most of the crap kids shows out there. At least until it's warm enough to play outside.

Twin Peaks -- 10 DVD set

October 30, 2007 9:46am

Speaking of poor tv-series dvd releases, I continue to be ashamed of the Northern Exposure releases. The first season had the humorous parka sleeve for the box, but other than that, it was terrible. The first disc was mislabeled, so Side A was really Side B, making for some very confused folks who were seeing the show for the first time but couldn't figure out why everyone already had all this history together.

Most of the original soundtrack was replaced, extras were limited to a brief handful of deleted scenes, I don't even remember if there were any commentary tracks.

Turns out the uber-fans in alt.tv.northern-exp had compiled their own DVD set, with great resolution captures, in order, with the original soundtrack, and TONS of extras. I'm considering buying that instead of picking up the other seasons, as they're not that much better.

sigh.

Tasered and shot with a beanbag gun for videotaping warrantless police search

>The resolution of my case? A friend represented me for free, and I got the charges dropped -- in exchange for an extorted agreement with the DA not to sue.

That's a shame. I wish you could have pursued a lawsuit. Every time charges are dropped in exchange for not suing or making the issue grotesquely public, they get to sweep one more incident under the rug and nothing changes. The community at large never hears that multiple cops were acting like thugs, the cops themselves retain clean records that permits them to get off the hook much easier when someone down the line does press the issue, and the city gets to continue defending the actions of their police force because, if it were really so bad, wouldn't they be getting sued more often?

The whole idea of the government agreeing not to proceed with bullshit charges in exchange for not telling anyone about the bullshit, is in itself, bullshit.

dammit. it's too early in the morning to be getting all riled up. I need more coffee.

I dunno... It looks to me like this copper is gonna be stirring some soup as soon as he's done shooting perps.

One might say he's already got the scoop, and is ladling up a bowl of steamy, hot justice - dishing up a life sentence dirt nap gumbo as it were - to this thug.
