This painting does seem sort of 19th century, though, because of all the obscure iconography that you need to be knowledgeable about to understand what's going on (Kind of like Pre-Raphaelite paintings, where it's like "This type of flower symbolizes love, and the mirror she's holding is vanity!")

I was amazed when I saw this cover at the bookstore. I almost wanted to buy the book just for its cover (and I'm one who usually throws away dust covers!)

On emo not being a real scene "because it's so commercialized": It's not like punk rock didn't eventually become commercialized. I mean, heck, Malcolm McLaren organized the Sex Pistols so he could sell more clothes. As for exhibits B,C and D: Blink 182, Good Charlotte, and Green Day. And yeah, mopey high schoolers are annoying, but they don't really deserve to be beaten up for it.

That's really awful. It's sickening that things like that still happen today. I hope those two young women will be able to get whatever medical and therapeutic attention they'll need after this ordeal.
