CCTVs don't solve crime in UK; Scotland Yard's answer: more CCTVs!

May 6, 2008 10:18am

#6: "There are only two policy options with empirically observed impact on crime rates"

BZZT! Wrong. There's only one and it's access to birth control for women (and in particular, access to lawful abortion!), even if the impact is felt only a generation later. It's the highest correlation ever found with an impact on crime.

Anything that can recharge the various types of digital camera batteries out there ? DB-6, NP-50, NP-150, etc...?

Merlin Mann's tips for getting unstuck

April 12, 2008 3:09am

Do you have such a list that applies to a software guy ? I need to make hundred of changes in a soft, but the very first one will break everything, so I'm not in too much of a mood to get started...

Slick Projector Alarm Clocks from Oregon Scientific

April 7, 2008 12:35pm

#2: there is a button to reverse the direction. RTFM!

This being said, I have and hate this device for a different reason: the radio absolutely sucks: the tuning is analog, totally impossible to regulate properly and the bandwidth is too large (you catch 2 or 3 frequencies at the same time) leading to horrible sound and constant static. Yup, pretty effective at getting me wide awake instantly: I just want it OFF !

Excuse me for asking, but what's a fold-in ?!?

Gary Wolf profiles Ray Kurzweil in Wired

March 28, 2008 9:30am

Reminds me of a story I've been trying to reference: in the early 90s, a guy like that who was into "I'll live to 100 because I jog every day and eat vegan", always giving interviews and animations... died at 50 of a heart attack... during a filmed interview ! I think he was the president of a jogging club or something. Fun time.

If you are into equipment lists, my wife has put up some for our own outdoor use in various situations (from WE car trip to climbing Everest).

Gaily Colored Monocycle on Sale

March 22, 2008 5:51am

Question: what happens when you brake too hard in one of those ? Answer: you start rolling head over ass with no hope of stopping unless by crashing into something. That's why you'll never see them 'street legal', unless you add external anti-roll wheels or a Segway-style internal stabilizer.

So when can we sue Boiron and other homeopathy snake oil makers ?

Vet's animal euthanasia blog

February 3, 2008 8:03am

My father's a vet and he always has those stories. What impressed me most is that he sometimes refuses to put down animals when the owners don't have a good reason. One example: in June there are lots of people who bring their old but perfectly healthy cats/dogs with the lame excuse "he's getting too old and we can't take him on vacation with us...". Instead he just injects a cocktail of vitamins and 'power' drugs and the old guy is good for another vacation.

Still, when he has to do it on some lame excuse ('I'm moving and animals aren't allowed where I go' or somesuch), he asks the owner to hold the beast while it's going ('sorry, my assistant is not available at this time'). A way to hammer some empathy on some people...

City of Lyon being cloned in Dubai

January 16, 2008 3:32am

No 's' in Lyon. It's considered the capital of gastronomy in France, but besides that I've never cared much for that place. Oh, and BTW, eating at Bocuse is really a life-changing experience.

Man gets disorderly conduct charge for writing vulgar message on check

January 15, 2008 12:29pm

I did exactly that while writing an 'extortion' check to get my car back from the impound. The bank refused to honor the check and I'll be forever grateful to them for that.

Why was my car impounded you ask ? "Because it had foreign tags" said the cop. I would have rather set it on fire in the middle of their fucking parking lot than pay them extortion money. Fuck them and I mean it.

Partsearch and Partstore.com: Giant Parts Catalog for DIY Repair

January 14, 2008 9:18am

I have an older Gateway laptop whose battery hold only a 2min charge. I'd love to use it with me on road trips (won't cry if it gets stolen) and it's perfectly adequate for most use, including watching video. I've wondered for a long time how I can replace the batteries as they are no longer available, even on eBay. Anyone knows ?

CinematicTitanic: Mystery Science Theatre 3000 rides again -- sheer hilarity!

January 14, 2008 8:48am

After hearing so much about MST3K, I tried to watch one episode once, a decade ago. Was it Karate Kid ? Don't remember, but I found the comments so lame that all I could think was that there was a lot more artistic value and interest in the movie itself than in the stupid shadows in front of the screen. Maybe it happened to be a lame episode, maybe it wasn't even a real one, but one thing for sure, I still have no idea what the fuss is about and how dissing bad movies can be considered 'entertainment'.

Index On Censorship's new issue on "cyberspeech"

January 14, 2008 2:18am

Practically, how does one do to see if a website is blocked in some areas or by some of those censorwares ? I have a modest site and some people have reported that they can't access some pages from misc locations. Of course it works fine when I test it. Is there a website that can test accessibility ?

Drunken Xmas brawl at South Pole

December 28, 2007 2:33pm

Those interested in those kind of polar stories (as opposed to the heroic kind, but let's be honest this is another kind of heroism) are strongly advised to read the book Big Dead Place or go to the site of the same name, which incidentally contains an article about alcohol in Antarctica written by yours truly.

Or you can refer to my own Antarctic site, but Nick's humor is much... icier.
