Actually IVY MIKE was right -- what you've just described above is a lunar eclipse. The monthly phases of the moon are NOT caused by the earth's shadow. They are caused by the earth's position relative to the illuminated portion of the moon's surface. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_phase
