Brits! Sign petition to fight proposal to let the cops lock you up for 42 days without charge!

October 1, 2008 8:59am

Well, if you sign the petition you'll find that Amnesty is not trying to persuade the Prime Minister directly as with the Number 10 site, the idea is that an Amnesty representative will personally visit MPS identified as key to overturning the vote and showing them the names on the petition. This could be highly effectve because Labour MPs are obviously worried about their majorities and the Government only had a majority of 9 at the last vote. Getting just 5 MPs to change their mind would kill this rotten, draconian and pointless law.

Amnesty's Unsubscribe Me video reenacts CIA waterboarding torture

April 23, 2008 1:14am

It's not just about watching a film, there is of course a campaign to get involved in and to do something positive: http://www.unsubscribe-me.org

BB readers with blogs can also spread the film around and make sure that everyone knows the truth behind such innocuous-sounding practices as 'waterboarding'. The site has lots of stuff to add to your sites and actions to undertake.

Naomi Wolf on Colbert Report: 10 steps to fascism

September 24, 2007 6:04am

The argument about whether the left or the right is worse (except the illuminating 'moonbat' vs. 'wingnut' definition, thanks for that) is surely missing the point. I can't see anyone actually disagreeing that 9/11 provided an excuse for a raft of repressive measures that at best infringe all our civil rights and -- if you are particularly unlucky -- mean you end up stuck in a cage in Guantanamo being humiliated and tortured.

In the UK, Amnesty is starting a campaign called 'Unsubscribe - from human rights abuse in the war on terror' to make the case that terror is not fought successfully with more terror. It is perhaps hugely telling that such an argument needs to be made at all but these are the times we find ourselves in.
