Einstein: Religion is "childish," "primitive"

May 13, 2008 10:16pm

I've always been curious about Einstein's view on religion. I always thought he was a active Jew, but now I know better.

I've never been able to reconcile how any scientist worth a damn could possibly see religion as anything more than superstitious bunkum. I guess it served a purpose in its day, but no longer. Over and over again, science has proven many of the 'facts' in religion are false, yet so many people cling to their beliefs as if they are proven facts.

Lenin had one thing right: "Religion is opium for the people. Religion is a sort of spiritual booze..."

Demolition derby with farm combines

May 13, 2008 9:01am

Yep, they do that out here, west of Portland, Oregon as well. It's amazing, when you consider new combines cost over $100K!

What Would You Put in Your Perfect Backpack?

April 10, 2008 2:12pm

* A zippered pocket on the side which is sized to your standard-issue umbrella.

* A semi-rigid or bottom-heavy design which would allow the backpack to stand-up on its own even with a laptop inside.

* A carrying handle on the top.

A secure hook/carabiner inside a zippered pocket for keys which are not needed once you hit the airport.

Arthur C. Clarke dead at 90

March 18, 2008 4:07pm

He has been one of my most favorite authors since I was just a 12 year-old lad. I think that I have seen "2001" more than any other movie.

Depending on his final wishes, of course, NASA should put some of his ashes on a geosynchronous satellite....

Levi's logo remix: horsies' revenge

I don't get it; I expected to see the horses whipping the men.

Infrared LEDs make you invisible to CCTV cameras

February 20, 2008 1:10pm

Let's not forget that CCDs with extended sensitivity into the IR wavelengths are not the only game in town for nighttime security. There also exists security cameras which use thermal imaging. They require no illumination whatsoever and would completely ignore the IR LED setup shown here.

Ford truck with RFID tool tracker

February 6, 2008 1:01pm

I could use this to tag the assets I have at the trade shows I manage. If one of my tools or other stuff leaves the booth, I can throw a stress ball at them!

Angular attic staircase -- cheap, steep, and does the trick

January 19, 2008 6:38pm

I've experienced alternating-tread staircases in several old farmhouses where I grew up in Vermont. I clearly remember my first experience with one: You climb very quickly as you step on the treads, then you are scared $!+less when you first try to go down. I remember going down backwards the first couple times because it's so steep!
