Little Brother tour-schedule: Chicago, Milwaukee, Seattle, San Francisco, NYC

May 7, 2008 2:01pm

Just thought I'd pass this along...
So I was in Cali for vacation this past week (went to the maker faire!) and was in the Berkeley area. I stopped into two "indy" bookstores on Friday the 2nd (it might have been Thurs, I can't remember), anyway, neither Cody's nor Pegasus had your book! :(
I ended up buying it at Barnes and Nobel (Last copy on the shelf). Gotta crack the whip and get into those indy stores too :)
IF you can add Philly to your list that'd be great.
enjoying the book so far. I like the "gait cams".

Scientists on their "life-changing" books

April 21, 2008 2:35pm

Common' boingers - let's not let these scientists come up with a better list than us! I'd really be curious what the readers of boingboing would list here...
I'll start :)
The Illuminatus Trilogy (and many other books by Robert Anton Wilson).

(what is the proper name for us who read boingboing?)

What are the odds...
I was curious if any of these names provided more info via a google search... not to say if these are correct or even the same men, but 3 out of 5 seem to be doctors or associated with a hospital.
I then followed the above link to the other photos, and was surprised to see this:

Punk rocker Wendy O. Williams, Dream Girl of Theta Chi 1984.

Not to mention that one of their frat parties was written up in a 1957 Playboy too.

sounds like a real party frat house! :)

Whistleblower says Feds have highspeed backdoor into major US wireless carrier's network

March 6, 2008 1:56pm

Maybe this isn't related at all, but I can't help but remember the recent Comcast "terms of service" agreement I just got a few weeks ago... One of the subjects jumped at me:
Eavesdropping. Our facilities are used by numerous persons or entities including, without limitation, other subscribers to HSI. As a result, there is a risk that you could be subject to "eavesdropping." This means that other persons or entities may be able to access and/or monitor your use of HSI. This risk of eavesdropping exists not only with our facilities, but also on the Internet and other services to which access is provided as a part of HSI. If you post, store, transmit, or disseminate any sensitive or confidential information, you do so at your sole risk.

source: http://www6.comcast.net/terms/subscriber/

I can't help but think this clause was meant to be a legal backdoor.

Interview with producer of swords and sorcery themed porn

March 4, 2008 7:20am

Point taken Antinous. Thanks.
My apologies Mark if I sounded that way. I did have a bad day yesterday and perhaps it came through via my comment. I should have been more respectful. I do have a tendency to overuse "quote marks" too - it's a habit I try to break, but find it difficult.

And if Takuan can totally misunderstand my point like that, then I give up trying to explain myself. I must not be doing a good job - I'll go back to lurking again. I'll keep my comments to myself.

needless to say - Thanks Mark for doing a good job on bb - I'm a huge fan and meant no disrespect. (and no I'm not being sarcastic here.)

ps> my comment about the Lizard Man was meant to be a joke too, but even that too sounds sarcastic and nasty. Sorry again.

Interview with producer of swords and sorcery themed porn

March 3, 2008 8:47pm

wow, I got some negative vibes from my comment there ... I'd like to respond...

to #19 Antinous>
No... I wasn't suggesting that bb be targeted towards third graders.
The very first post by Jeff was speaking to the issue raised a few days ago by Xeni about bb being targeted "unfairly" by censorware. As some have pointed out (including myself), it's posts like this one that trigger the keywords in censorware.
I'm ALL for posts like this on bb - most of us are adults here. But I don't think some of these posts are appropriate for kids - thus making the censorware understandable (to me).

To #23 Mark>
That wasn't my point at all.
Ok, I'll try to break it down again...

1) bb gets put on a list of websites to be censored due to questionable content, by programs meant to keep office workers and/or children from seeing inappropriate material. These programs are called "censorware".
2) bb routinely posts adult oriented posts. (That's not a complaint)
3) These posts use words that trigger the censorware. Just in this article alone, words like "sex, whorelord, porn, whorecraft, masturbating, nympho, and deep-throat".
4) Jeff in comment #1, points this out.
5) Mark then seems to respond - But this is just a news story about porn, it's not actually porn. So therefore it should not be censored via the censorware programs.
6) So that's when I made my comment saying that I thought his logic was "intellectually dishonest". I was NOT claiming that a story about porn *is* porn. I was claiming that a story about porn *is* inappropriate for children and some office spaces.

Am I really not explaining myself clearly here?

Wait... am I trying to debate logic with someone who uses a "lizard man" as an example? Okay, this might be a losing battle.

Interview with producer of swords and sorcery themed porn

March 3, 2008 2:24pm

"Is news about porn the same thing as porn? Is news about gambling the same thing as gambling? Is news about the liquor industry the same thing as having a drink?"

I'm disappointed in your logic here Mark. I think that's an "intellectually dishonest" argument your posting here.

Think of it this way...
If this is "just news" as you put it...
Would you feel comfortable in bringing this article into say a 3rd graders class room and reading it in front of the kids?
Yes or No?

Has your website been unfairly blocked by censorware?

February 28, 2008 4:05pm

I'm with #21 (Meridian) on this one.
BoingBoing has complained in the past about being put on these lists (and offered ways around the censorware). Yet bb continues to push the envelope of "questionable" posts. Meridian listed several links, I'd offer this one:
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/12/top-10-sex-memes-of-.html
I'm not debating the issue of whether or not Censorware is right or wrong. What I'm pointing out here, is that you can't be posting about things like Goatse - and then get upset that you're flagged.
All that said, I'm an adult. I can chose to deal with things like this. But in a public access library, schools, offices, some of bb's posts are inappropriate. I can't fault them for wanting to block those posts.
If you want to be seen by all, consider that before posting something questionable.
(I offer this comment as a HUGE FAN of bb - I'm not trying to be nasty.)
Xeni - I'd be interested in your logic as to why you think bb has been misclassified.

Larry Lessig decides against Congress run

February 28, 2008 3:34pm

My first reaction when I saw this: "dang it!"
But now that I've had a whole 60 seconds to think about it, I'm kinda glad. It might be MORE difficult to CHANGE the system if one were involved within it. It will take pushing change on many levels of the system and with many people - as an outside group we might have a better chance.
Either way - We're behind you Larry!
(well, I am anyway)

#9 Cowcide -
Thanks for the response Cow, FYI, I did google it, and I didn't find anything (perhaps I didn't use the right keyword combo).
My question was not whether "public participation" or even if the "civil rights movement" worked or not... obviously that's true.
My question was whether or not Flooding a phone with calls, or sending emails has ever worked before.
Neither of which you answered. So thanks for your sarcastic reply, next time loose the attitude and try helping someone who asks a question, rather than belittle them.

#10 Puke -
Thanks Puke, that was the type of answer I was looking for. I'm knew to the world of politics, so this was an honest question for me.

There is much more to the symbol than just Dio's version... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corna
and also check out:

As with most superstitious symbols, their use can be used by other cultures with totally opposite meanings. For example the Swastika used to be a symbol for good luck.

Is this the end of cheap food?

January 21, 2008 2:16pm

semi related...
I had sticker shock this weekend when I went to purchase a 20oz bottle of soda... $1.60 at my local convenience store! Wasn't it not too long ago that a 20oz bottle was only $1.05? Ugh.. I feel so old now... "I remember when soda was only a nickel" :)

Great cover too.

xkcd on the writer's strike: I miss Jon Stewart

December 21, 2007 1:06pm

I'm actually this close ][ to canceling my cable thanks to the daily show disappearing. Comcast just raised their rates in my area, in addition to taking away 3-4 channels. I can get the channels back if I want to pay another $5 a month to go digital (which I don't want to do).
Before I thought I'd never survive without Daily show or Colbert, but this has taught me I can.
I just can't decide if I should wait for BSG to return or just wait til that comes out on DVD.
I also would like an explanation as to why TDS and CR are coming back. Is it against their will? How do they plan on putting on a decent show without writers? This could be really bad for Jon and Steven. Lol, I can just picture them sitting at their desks for a half hour in a dark studio just reading a book :)

October 24, 2007 12:29pm

Since we're talkin about the new redesign of the site... I'm not lovin all the attention to the advertisements. When the very first item at the top of a website is not the name of the website and is instead an advertisement, something is wrong.
Not to mention, that when you open the comments page, you have the same advertisements slow the page load. I know, your trying to make money and all, but I hope this doesn't turn into a corporate splattered ad site.

Mysterious metal falls from sky

October 19, 2007 12:48pm

I saw this on the local news a few days ago. The reporter mentioned there was a military base nearby. The FAA guy wouldn't comment.
Wasn't there a similar story like this not too long ago where they determined it was a chunk of metal from a leaf/tree chipper?
Happy Harry's Sword of mighty power = lol

DIY ringlight photography

October 10, 2007 1:49pm

This doesn't make sense to me at. The purpose of a ring light is usually for "macro" photography where you can't get a flash close to your subject unless it's on the lens itself.
This is just using a light source that's behind the camera. You could remove the circles and get the same exact effect (using various brightness controls from your monitor). This could also be used from any other light source larger than the camera itself.
Kinda interesting effect, but it's not a substitute for a ring light. (imho).

Artist makes backyard periscope surveillance system

That periscope at Edmund's was always the highlight of the trip for me! That, and looking through their military surplus in the back room. I miss that store.

Wacom's Icky New Logo

October 3, 2007 2:06pm

I too was confused by this new logo, then I saw it... (at least it's my interpretation, who knows if that's what the artist intended)... They are supposed to be looking down on various pens with color'd tops. Wacom makes pens with "tilt technology" so these are pens at different angles looking down. I'd hate to see what this looks like in black and white in a newspaper ad. Not saying it's a great logo, but I think I "get it" anyway.

Studying global warming through old masters' paintings

October 1, 2007 10:05am

I really had to laugh at this when I read it. Either these "researchers" don't know any artists, or have never painted a picture in their life. If your going to look at an artists interpretation of reality for "scientific" insights, you really should have your "science license" taken away from you. I HOPE they don't look at Dali's painting of the melting clocks... It's gonna throw all their calculations out the window!

Airport guard falsely accuses NetStumbler.com creator of making death threat

September 18, 2007 12:24pm

I think we all should just cut to the chase with all this airport security stuff. Next time you fly, just show up with an orange jumpsuit on (for safety reasons of course), and with handcuffs, and feet shackles and NO carry on baggage, No food, No drinks, nothing - oh and barefoot. I mean that's what they want right? They don't want ANY kind of threat. For Pete's sake... You're not allowed to bring a cup of pudding on a plane.
If we all started flying in handcuffs, maybe they'd get the message?
I'm all for blog posts to spread the message, and websites like "the consumerist", but until we (the consumers) get organized and can boycott a company to the point where it hurts sales, then nothing will change. In fact, it'll probably get worse - if thats possible.
