#11, there's a running gag on the internet you may have not heard about... If you see something that has been altered photographically, say, any picture released from Iran, you can say:

"This looks shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels."

Now, don't you feel educated?

As for the man in the video, oh yeah, anyone from Texas has fond memories of this guy. I drove past the church quite a bit in my Denton days.

Several bands in Denton in the 90s enjoyed using his squinty eyed images in their posters, like the hard core crowd treated Reagan.

I apologize for using a slash as the phrase "and/or" earlier.

It's funny that the "goatee" actually makes one look like a douche and also stimulates vaginas as well as manginas.

Perhaps since it's neither a goatee nor a Van Dyke we can simply call it that: mangina.

Why America is F'cked: funny but true video about graphic design

August 1, 2008 9:25am

His example of a great sign was a bit nifty, but no greatness exhibited in comparison to the era in which it was made.

I agree with the guy who says this sign also means Romania is fucked. I think the title of his documentary is deliberately liberal in order to draw a crowd.

I'd rather flip through a book comparing 100 renovations gone bad to get this message; regardless of the dude's size, it's still just some dude. If the movie featured more chicks, maybe.

Less time of looking at him on the couch and more showing the backdrop of the hotel and other design features.

I went to a great hotel in Austin once, on South Congress. It was a bit too sterile for my aesthetic, some of those goofy zen elements were OK some weren't, but it's an example of something new that far exceeds that crappy blue sign for that middle of nowhere motel.

The point is I liked the argument that was being given until it reverted back to pointing out the negatives in our society.

Fuji makes you sign bizarre EULA to buy a camera

April 3, 2008 7:54am

Good to see the moderation here keeping people from abusing others in what really could easily be a simple discourse on cameras, EULAs, increasing technology, and the scrambling of people to attempt desperately to cover their own asses. I agree with Hounskull this isn't really a big deal in itself or a reason to hate Fuji passionately.

Perhaps if you find the same camera without the EULA, buy it from the other party. I stopped going to one dentist when they requested I sign an arbitration agreement and instead went with another dentist. Not that I never sign those agreements, just that I had seen this dentist for 3 years with no agreement and then it was sprung upon me. 3 months after I changed dentists, that office closed down.

Vintage cocaine party photos

March 31, 2008 4:15pm

I believe the parody is on the 80s itself, not just the use of cocaine, and cocaine is definitely a part of the 80s, just like the prior poster listed.

I am also put a bit off kilter by this post and the specific way it was presented by boinger pesco, but I didn't really get as big a rise off of the privacy thing. If you want to keep photos private, don't let them end up at a swap meet.

I have plenty of incriminating photos in my own collection and in digital form. None of these are currently at a swap meet. If I sloppily allow them into someone else's hands, whether they have nefarious plans at the time or not, I am to blame.

I'm really not trying to get disemvowelled here, and I know being enthusiastic about boutique education is trendy with the new age jet setters, but that program has a history of being quite a bit pro-white. Social worker befriends mugger

March 28, 2008 1:29pm

I also became slightly skeptical of this article upon reading it. Not that the situation couldn't exist, but just that there is nothing in the article other than the guys word itself. Someone here apparently from that organization that broke the story states the stories are fact-checked. What would that mean in this story, if you don't mind my asking?

I think it would be sufficient to have one statement from the diner to the effect that this event happened. He mentions everyone came by and shook his hand, why don't we get a quote from one of those folks? I'd trust the dishwasher over anyone else in that scenario.

I, like others, get a kick out of the religious association folks are making. After watching I Am JesusLegend last night, this just makes me laugh a bit more than I did during that viewing. I thought Taladega Nights was bad at product placement...

Further, I've had a couple of similar experiences. While drinking a bit, enough to sing in the street while in college on the way to a little house party, I was approached by a group of about 5 guys obviously looking for a victim. Instead of panic, I invited them to the party I was walking to. I could judge these guys really were amateurs, not any hard core gang types, and took the chance that actually responding but in a bizarre way would be best. I'm sure it could have ended worse had I not been in front of an obviously large group of people about 50 yards away in front of a house... but still.

There's a couple others, but I've bored you already. Nothing quite as awe inducing as this event, but similar. So the act is not implausible to me, just feel the story could easily have made itself more believable with one additional witness statement.

Boing Boing's Moderation Policy

March 27, 2008 12:16pm

I like the summary of Hayden's post. Brilliant. I don't know, I'm personally a fan of fark and once was a fan of slashdot, until I got tired of hearing about technology and microsoft vs. linux.

The ability to have user feedback on comments (slashdot) and voting on posts in general (fark) seems to be a good self-moderating approach.

I think many here have the impression that Hayden is being personal, albeit arbitrarily so (as expressed in her own discourse that you won't be able to find a pattern of her beliefs with the moderation).

I also like the suggestion that defaults to the disemvowelling, if that must remain the method, but allows anyone else to see the full text.

And I agree that it'd be more fun if the bloggers themselves responded more often. Perhaps they are too busy disremembering who their advertisers are. Lol.

Worst food in America: Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing

February 13, 2008 10:24am

I agree with Perigee here to a certain extent. I'm not sure at all why this site would link to something as homosexually closeted as Men's Health magazine just to advertise for Outback Steakhouse, and then go on to bemoan the caloric content of this beast. I know very skinny people

Still, being fat is unattractive to a few people I know. Just a few. So it's a minority opinion. I know a few who are chubby chasers as well. God Bless Clinton for helping your cause, Perigee.

But many of your points, like "eating fatty shitty food won't make you fat, it's ALL DNA", ignores the 3rd factor: your own self image and will power and how both have a massive effect on your pituitary gland, and, therefore, your metabolism. I believe metabolism is king for sure. Try LSD.

Anonymous vs. Scientology protest in LA today

February 11, 2008 10:31am

Fairy tales like return to life stories (zombies), indeed. I agree with the poster's comment that at least gives credit to institutions as religions when they help the downtrodden more than the victors. But certainly a religion that celebrates the victors more, if only to motivate the downtrodden, could be considered a religion. In fact, many could say that is the real world situation with many religions. The fact that one is clothed and fed only serves a cult's purpose more, usually after a series of humiliations and stripping of traditional familial ways. Such as missionaries perform in Africa and South America and Alabama.

Scientology is a perfect target of the internet's subconscious and Anonymous is a good representation of this in human flesh. Refraction will allow the internet to have this effect on us. Fractal.

Africa: small-scale generator powered by sugar and yeast (video)

January 23, 2008 11:39pm

Oh yeah, and I noticed now that I left it at "starving", which opens up to trollage. I meant to change that to "sick", or "so starving eating some sugar really wouldn't do anything at this point", but it's a bit complicated. Take the baby out of the picture and just say someone broke their arm or some other non-food-needing thing in a place where the government hasn't provided electricity. Good god, I don't know. Just don't make it eat food and we'll all be OK?

Africa: small-scale generator powered by sugar and yeast (video)

January 23, 2008 11:24pm

I agree with #5/Paranormal/01-23-2008-21:52's intentions, but since the site appears designed around gadgets invented in Africa, I want to think that the opening volley showing Paranormal understands Africa is a large continent and some of the countries even play footie is really unnecessary and out of place. The link is to a site about Africans making gadgets for Africans and is put together by a group of Africans. Then I notice they are all East Africans.

The next paragraph I agree with to a certain extent. Food is more valuable in most situations. But I disagree nobody in Africa will have use for this 'sort' of concept. Perhaps if you have a baby that is starving, using some of the sugar to power your pre-paid cell phone to call a doctor because otherwise you have to walk into town is probably a good thing, indeed. However, I think a simple hand crank servo would suffice.

I think this sort of project represents the same folly that goes on anywhere in the world when it comes to gadgets, science, and funding. It just happens to glom onto an African thingee because it comes from an African in the first place. I haven't yet understood why humans want to use food to fuel gadgets. Only in specific instances would it make sense.

Now for my mini-rant... "Firstly?" wtf.

January 19, 2008 10:42am

That said, to make it prettier they could have invented a new money type(s), like platinum, diamond, etc., then stuck to char's and rolled them all at 100. It depends on the trade off in their design, which I am unaware of. structs of 8-byte combinations and algorithms to roll them over or a single 64-bit value per item/char and algorithms to present it as gold/silver/copper.

World of Warcraft limits your wealth to 2^31 copper

January 19, 2008 10:38am

I've taken at least 4 server projects to 64-bit over the past decade. No reason WoW can't due the same other than laziness. Besides, proper classes could easily be constructed to allow a number as large as the number of bits in your entire server if you avoid using built in primitives.

I hope the garbage=>hydrogen news as of late (288% energy increase using electron-spout'n bacteria-cells, economically viable right now) pans out.

We should increase our measurement of the planet and our impact on it.

I believe it is very important to understand how the planet responds to us. We are obviously having an impact on the chemical composition on the air, but this is a mighty complex system.

I've always thought we are making the planet warm because we expect to be around during the next ice age. Be "we" I mean our DNA of course.

Good luck with all the political parts of this debate.

EatMeCrunchy cereal bowl keeps everything dry while you pick at your breakfast

October 18, 2007 1:05am

goddamn. You'd think that a farking cereal bowl wouldn't get me this way. I don't even eat cereal. I avoid milk, including soy. I don't buy the bones thing. I eat veggies. I'll die from something else, trust me.

But damnit, I UNDERSTAND THIS PRODUCT. sort of. It's not that you want the bowl of cereal to be extant from t3h milx. You want just that part to be separated. It's just a fetish. I'm telling you, as a kid, I mushed the cereal into one part of the bowl, the wet part, and spread other parts of the cereal to the other side of the bowl, the dry part. I'd separate, combine, and generally muck about with this arrangement, learning, the process about ELECTRICAL STATIC and GRAVITY and wetness and taste and maybe even some chemistry.

My parents used plastic milk cartons and all the FLORAL ESSENCE LITES have LEEEEEECHED out my VITAL FLUIDS.

I'm super serial.

I had to return to this after watching some crazy woman eat tuna after shoving her cat off the table. I love t3h intarnas. Oops. I keep forgetan me English.

If they don't make it so the little shelf is simply fit into the bowl after you put in the milk, and is removable, I'll agree with Bricology on that point.

Oh yeah, and it's a known fact that the paper fold carton made a considerable comeback in the late 80s and through the 90s due to the knowledge that FLORAL ESSENCE LITES were LEEEEECHING the VITAL FLUIDS from the milk.

Wait.. this isn't fark?

Extraneous 'e' and just the way I like to say electrostatic, but I figur'd you'd be picky. Why not pick on oughta? It's not like this thang doesn't underline for me, it's just that I have more fun than you.

I don't buy your Hughes-esque problems with paperboard milk cartons.

PS: tilt the bowl, if anyone got past the horrid, horrid English and to the point of my response.

My turn. If you are so retarded you can't figure out on your own how to cordone your milk to one side of the cereal while the other side stays perfectly dry, you oughta try learning a bit more about gravity and electrical static.

And if you can't bend back paper to make milk pour, you fail.

Which laws don't we enforce and why?

At some point I became convinced Ayn Rand won't be happy until we are all robots. Can someone tell me my impression of her was wrong?

I for one, am not convinced that stating this was an airport lounge was "close enough". Carmen Sandiego herself shed a tear when she read that shoddy observation.

But a real question... what would possess any individual, including Carmen herself, to dress that hideously?

Banksy put a picture of a kid with balloons floating over the wall in Jerusalem. What have you done, Bricology? Written numbered lists criticizing the actions of others?

Grr. I didn't submit that twice. Anyhow, I also addressed Lester and then continued as though I was addressing Lester... I meant to make it obvious I was addressing Bricology for the rest of the comment.

No, no, Lester, it's an informed opinion. And yes, Thomas Kinkade is, in one sense, the greatest living artist, if your measurement is "I think greatest living artist means the one most people purchase". Which is not what I said.

I think the fact that you offered to debate some sort of reasons why you think Banksy is "one of the most utterly worthless of artists" is clearly indicative to me I'd be wasting my time. However, I enjoy wasting time quite a bit. Please, tell me your reasons.

Nice flame bait Bricology, but I believe when it comes to art, the observer is always right. So, how can I complain if your concept of art is not the same as mine?

As for Russian Culture Ministers banning things... he is saying that Russia is not sponsoring this photo, and I guarantee that means if a Russian is in charge of the exhibition, regardless of country, it will be wise for them to adhere to the principals of their homeland, lest the polonium...
