Steampunk city in Second Life: New Babbage

New Caledon is an amazing place. It's even more amazing to realize that it's not made by graphic artists or software professionals, but SL users.
The world's tiniest RC helicopters
July 3, 2008 10:04am
I have one of these as a desk toy. It's fun, but incredibly difficult to control. It's subject to even the slightest air currents, and the control system is hard to master. Worse, you can take out an eye with those spinning blades. Definitely not for kids.
SOS is 100 years old: ...---...---...---...---
July 2, 2008 8:51am
I am not a Morse code operator (IANAMCO?), but I think the Morse code in the post title actually says SOSOSO. :) If you want to repeat an SOS three times, I think it would be:

Pretend cops bully videographer, videographer wins
June 27, 2008 10:21pm
I think I might have made my point badly, and accidentally gave the impression that I was trolling.
I agree that the guards in question *might* have overreacted to a person with a camera, but we should keep in mind that they were probably ordered to do so.
Even if it's wrong to ban photography in public spaces (which I think it is), one has to ask whether it's worth wasting the security guard's time over a point of policy? The guard is not personally responsible for policy and has no input on making policy. They are doing their job as they have been instructed. If they have been told to go after photographers, then from what I saw in the video clip, they did their job. The fault lies with their policy-makers, not with the guards themselves.
Pretend cops bully videographer, videographer wins

I think it's ridiculous how people get up in arms over a security guard DOING THEIR JOB. They are trained to watch for suspicious actions and yet everyone attacks them for doing exactly that. How does it help our security to waste the time of security guards?
Adventurer will live 300 days as Robinson Crusoe
May 29, 2008 9:21pm
He spends 300 days filming himself on an island and only gets 52 minutes in the final cut? 300 days of footage should get him a mini-series at least.
Guinness ball cap with built-in bottle opener
May 26, 2008 10:47am
Not entirely practical. If you open a bottle while wearing the hat, the bottle is inverted, and you get a Guinness shower (although I'm sure some people would pay good money to be showered in Guinness, come to think of it).
Nokia Still Growing Their Own iPhone
April 8, 2008 11:59am
I notice that the Nokia's screen has a wider aspect ratio than the iPhone/iPod Touch, which is totally non-standard. That alone is a big advantage over Apple.
Thrill of looping: the latest ride of 1934
March 16, 2008 8:22am
It's completely nuts to spin an off-balance load like that. Something is going to break, and you don't want to be near it when it happens.
The modern version of this ride has a counter-balance.

Those radioactive beans aren't just tasty -- they provide their own light source too!
Toaster bacon sounds like a great idea if you don't have a microwave. Or a toaster oven. Or a frying pan.
Dutch arrest "online furniture thief"
November 14, 2007 7:28am
Whenever a case of "virtual theft" arises, it's too easy to be distracted by the "virtual" aspect (but it's not even real!), and forget the real crimes required to pull off a virtual heist: account theft, identity theft, fraud, and more. It shouldn't matter whether these acts are committed via the web, virtual world, or game.
