US Constitution in graphic novel form

Jeff Thomas, are you taking the stance that it is a PROBLEM that our country was designed with more tolerance than say Catholocism, Lutheramism or any of the other Christian movements? Do you not understand that millions of people have emigrated to this country so that they may worhsip freely the religion of their choice? Would you rather this country was run with the same fervor as say, Iran? Or am I just being cranky today?
Kids who photograph themselves naked are child pornographers and sex offenders in Ohio
October 10, 2008 3:49pm
You know, I like probably a goodly number of others now adult in age, spent many thrilling moments as a child doing 'stuff' which some would classify as deviant or perverted. I am a very healthy mid-life adult with a more than healthy sexual appetite (avg. roughly .8 occurences of sex per day) and I owe it to how I grew up and learned about myself and others. Hopefully my boys will be as happy and self aware as adults.

The comparison? Thin at best but…

If It Walks Like A Duck and Talks Like a Duck Dept: The McCain-Palin Mob
October 10, 2008 10:18am
The only thing that made this thread worthing scrolling through were Theresa NH's comments, and I always have to scan Takuan and Antinous. That said, this is the ugliest presidential campaign I can recall in my 30 years as an adult. The Democrats suck at polarizing, the Republicans are brilliant. I think we should put both Barack and John in charge, rotating POTUS every 6 months and forcing the other to sit as VP for that period. Neither get paid if they don't get the House and Senate to work together. Neither get credit for success or failure, they share. Oh, and Ovaltine for each just before bed. The Jr. Economy we are suffering under is scary enough with out these violence-tinged flame wars in the national lime-light. BTW, since when does a US Senator become a terrorist-leaning Socialist? And why is no one on the right concerned about a small town governor ruling the land? Jr.'s "Eyes to the front" approach to diplomacy and the economy has gotten us into this mess.
Why can't America call its torture *torture*?
September 25, 2008 10:15am
Then it seems reasonable to take issue with John McCain's personal history during the war of enduring harsh interrogation techniques.
He didn't survive torture, just some bad-ass questioning, so I guess we won't be hearing any more campaign positioning on THAT point any longer.
And thank god we need no longer worry about other countries treating dissidents badly because the U.S. has drawn a new line in the global sand that says this crap is AOK!! There you go, China! Wanna buy some debt?

Photoblog devoted to century-old piccies
August 29, 2008 11:07am
#8, #10: Malt, they have always attributed the source, as you later noted. I really like Shorpy because it allows for interesting comments by buffs and wise-asses alike, and I find it MUCH easier to navigate than the LoC. I actually like the fact that the site's owner will also include his own 'vintage' family photos as well. For me, its a reverse sci-fi time machine and I love trying to parse out the human stories hidden in each photo.
Wow, for once, I was ahead of the boingboing webgeek curve!!
Controlling copies isn't necessarily part of an artist's livelihood, but getting them accurately attributed is

I have followed a Visual Whistle Blower site for a while: http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/blog3/
And I doubt it has had much impact on the problem of attribution theft.

What it's like to fly with no ID under TSA's new rules
June 24, 2008 6:36am
I only fly once every year or so, but in the past 3.5 yrs, I have TWICE lost my ID. Both times I was in mid-trip, so that may have had an impact, but I have always been treated with respect and even humor. CAVEAT: I am white, 6' and avg build, I smile and kid a lot even with strangers, and I am male. That has to be the diff, cuz both times I was allowed to proceed with little problem right up to the scanner, where I repeated my situation. Both times they merely pulled me aside for additional wanding. No suspiciousness, no creepy Big Brother atitudes, just pleasantness, courtesy and when I made cracks (careful to avoid 'bomb' or 'terrorist' jokes) I got smiles and even giggles.
Its good to be me.
Bush administration: Fourth Amendment doesn't apply to domestic military operations
April 2, 2008 1:30pm
Oh and as it relates to protesting in this country, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the repression and persecution of ordinary citizens of the US that tried protesting the WTO meetings held here. Remember? Governors and mayors conspired to outlaw lawful peaceful protest. The times they gotta change...
Bush administration: Fourth Amendment doesn't apply to domestic military operations
April 2, 2008 1:28pm
Three weeks ago, I watched "V for Vendetta" for the first time. The parallels were absolutely chilling. I believe this country was founded on freedom as its guiding principle, not safety. And yet, as our standard of living has grown, We The People have demanded safety: safety from Big Bad Businessmen, safety from hurting ourselves as we voluntarily ride motorcycles, safety from vaguely threatening folks from the other side of the world. I will never make my kids wear helmets or pads (hell, by not wearing those as a bike-riding, skateboarding kid, I learned how to fall) and I teach them to stand up for themselves and to do so for the weaker amongst them. I will not live as a victim and I will not perpetuate that mindset in my family. The government should fear the People, the People should never fear their government.
Three Seasons in One Google Map

I googled our house a while back, where we have lived for 4 years now, and on the sat pic, I can see my 1966 Imperial parked curbside and hiding under a car cover. That only sat that way for at the most 6 weeks, because neighbors complained about it being an abandoned car (cuz of the cover) and I was forced to uncover it. Veddy cool.

TSA apologizes to "blogesphere" for arbitrary gadget screenings
February 7, 2008 3:34pm
Ok, as a not-to-frequent traveller, I too have TSA stories!! While visiting the Easter Shore of VA three years ago, I lost my wallet and my photo ID. I was kinda freaked, tried calling all sorts of folks until I finally talked to someone at Norfolk Int'l Airport. They said just come in, and we'll pull you to the side for additional screening. I wrote down their name and our convo, fearing that I was hosed, but it worked out fine, just as they said it would. Then last year, I flew to Oahu on my honeymoon, and during my stop-over in Chicago, the person at the check-in desk failed to return my ID. So we land in Honolulu and I realize its gone and I freak again. Called 1-800 Airline and got nothing but auto systems. Finally reach the gate in Chicago, but its closed. Spent my 9 days in Oahu with no ID, but I dont' drink so it weren't no biggee. On the return flight, I got pulled aside and wanded, but that was it. When we got home, an envlope was in the mail with my ID. Then yesterday, I was returning to CMH from Richmond, VA and the guys at the scanner kept passing my laptop bag back through the scanner, talking and pointing, then almost pulling the bag to check it, then rescanning it, so I finally said out loud "Crap! Did I leave my girlie mag in there??" The female behind the counter collecting tubs busted out laughing. The guy then brought my bag over and asked who's it was. I raised my hand as he started going through it, looking for something. I had Motorola S9 headphones, several chargers, but that wasn't what he was looking for. Finally, he found the pocket watch I had slipped into a an inside pocket, and we both went "Aha!" I said "Guess you dont' see many of these, huh?" He said nope, smiled and sent me on my way. Now, it they confiscated my laptop like they seem to be doing to travellers returning from the UK, I'd have shit a brick. Good to be Amurehcun.

Antinous, you sound like you were posting the 'queer' comment from experience and/or preference. That's cool, but you may wish to temper your language: when I read your first post (#21), I was ready to drop the Bigot Hammer on you, but further reading (#31) indicated you weren't one, and yet further exploration (#35) indicated you have an irreverent sense of humor. >
Pinball Hall of Fame in Spirit Magazine
January 12, 2008 9:03am
It was between 1980 and 1983 in Oxford, Ohio. While enrolled at Miami University, where I majored in Alcoholism, I spent many happy hours in a bar called The Balcony, where I mastered the art of playing for over an hour on one quarter. The machine was called Xenon and I got good enough to gain extra balls and extra credits to play chepa for a long time, assisted by a couple of beers and a healthy dose of Mother Nature. The multi-ball play was awesome and the game's machine voice would seducively announce "Xenon" I touched it in all the right ways.

Video of Bob Staake's unusual drawing process
January 3, 2008 3:40pm
OMFG! It's like Staake is working in reverse-negatives of negative space!!! Augh! My brain can't imagine even trying this technique.
Hmm. Wonder if it has changes the way he sees the world around him when he moves through it daily. I know after a punishing round of Tetris, my brain tries to force images of the world around me to 'behave' in like patterns. Truly awesome post.

I HAD a board just like those! It was my first, and yes the clay wheels were loud as hell. Also, it was a good thing those bearings kept the speed down cuz it was tough to carve hard on those wheels: they would just side slip at a whim.
And did you notice the board was laminated 1x1s? I used to hand so hard off the side to carve that eventually the side pieces just dropped off until all that was left was the 3 center strips that the trucks were screwed to. Not enough to ride very well, so we screwed down a monster board and made a rad mega-downhill cruiser! Damn I used to have fun on that board. Never knew how lame it was until I saw the first production plastic board with kick tail: The Continental!! Woot, woot!
How to board a plane without ID -- be a pageant queen
October 18, 2007 2:56pm
Whoa, whoa , whoa!! Its not hard to board a domestic US flight without a driver's license! Twice in the past three years, I have lost my driver's license just prior to boarding airplanes: once in Norfolk, VA and once in Oahu, HI. Both times, the nice TSA folks listened to my story, then pulled me out of the line for some additional wand-waving. Afterwards, I was on my happy way. Granted, I am a white, middle-aged midwestern American with a nice, generic Irish name, but hey: isn't Gilmore one as well?
Badware state-of-the-union for 2007
October 6, 2007 3:58pm
Yah, I was wondering too about this supposed vulnerability. Granted, I am a Mac user since '90, and a Firefox user since it was available, but I am also just paranoid enough to know that I am not perpetually invulnerable. I mean, don't we all get a tad nervous when we're web-enabled and the hard drive spins up and starts chunking along for no obvious reason? Then again, my 60G drive did just bite the big one, apparently due to burnt out bearings. Must accound for the manic 'chunking' noises. Still, I just couldn't stand to 'live' with a zombified G4TiBook!!!
See-thru pinball machine

Huh. No doubt it IS beautiful to look at, but I wonder how this affects its playability? Seems like it would be pretty disctracting. Then again, 20 years ago, I had alittle help from Mother Nature when would play Xenon for 3 hours on one quarter back in Oxford Ohio. Ah, the good ol' days when I had nothing better to do for an entire afternoon. {8¬)
