Origins of exercise equipment

With who, pray tell, can we place the blame for the invention of the Hawaii Chair?

New York Sun column: "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone"

April 14, 2008 8:40am

This is much a much needed reality check.

Scaring people with what might happen to their kids is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Now if we could have more of this rational thinking when people wanted to pump drugs or vaccines into their children, to "keep them safe/healthy", without questioning the "professionals".

One size fits all doesn't always fit when it comes to your own children.

Tom Waits's dog food commercial

Lest we not forget Tom's admiration for famous V.O. artist and Word Jazz creator Ken Nordine.

Waits even appeared on Nordine's "Devout Catalyst" album.

Tom Waits's dog food commercial

How does one get on Boing Boing anyway. I sent a link to this video awhile ago on a post about foreign celebrity commercials (well known celebrities doing commercials they wouldn't do here in countries like Japan). I think it was before they updated the comments section, so I had to "suggest a link." To no avail, no credit from the internets. Of course I couldn't tell you who directed me to it...

As a long time Waits fan, it is a most peculiar offering from T.W., being his staunch opposition to using his work for commercials. I can only assume since this is voice work, it falls under acting for him.

David Byrne: I was BoingBoing-blocked at Denver airport.

I read Byrne regularly and he always mentions "C", is this photographer Cindy Sherman? They seem like a good match...

The LEGO Brick Turns 50

January 28, 2008 1:48pm

For some reason I have in a box of old family pictures, the directions to a lego like block called an "Elgo" that would probably pre-date the Lego brick. My father would be 67, and this is probably from when he was a kid. I'll post it on my flickr site if there is interest in this possible product knock off by Lego.

Tom Cruise's Scientology video -- and Gawker's legal battle to host it

January 17, 2008 8:36am

What a bizarre mixture of corporate speak, self help, and Access Hollywood style hype, no wonder some people are lapping this shit up. It's interesting because they throw in Scientology terms like it's part of our normal vocabulary.

The narrator sounds like a cross between Don Pardo and some 40's movie newsreel narrator.

Do Kids Still Play with Wooden Toys?

January 16, 2008 8:02am

My son (2) loves both his wooden trains and track, which are by far his favorite. He also loves his matchbox cars too. Wood toys seem to hold a fascination longer then some of the electronic ones (minus the talking, moving hotwheels track). The bigger wood toys seem just more durable and easier for him to hold. Dumping and pulling/pushing are what matter most with them. He does have a few comparable size plastic trains that "play" with the wooden ones just fine. He's named them all as to which Thomas character they are, so it being an "official" Thomas and friends toy, doesn't seem to matter (which is good, because their $$$).
I run into a lot of Waldorf snobs who insist on wooden toys, and I like them for my own reasons, but have witnessed that it doesnt seem to get in the way of his imagination if it's a disney plastic train or a wooden dollar store train, he likes them all.

Sony Reader ePaper Upgraded, Leaked

September 11, 2007 8:41am

Was the last model the 404? That would be funny given Sony's past errors for sitting on proprietary and innovative technology until it dies a slow death (minidisc? Memory Stick? do I really have to list all their failures?). Definitely interested in this too, as moves have diminished my library as well. I think a previous BB post recommended they sell these cheap with subscriptions to get them out there - I would be all for that
