Graph of solar radiation in the US (Southwest is best)

Passively Multiplayer Online Game launches -- using game-scoring to keep track of and expand how you browse

May 12, 2008 11:21am

I've been following PMOG since its conception. It's a cool idea, but the actual implementation is rather confusing, undocumented, and NOT passive. Everything leading up to PMOG's launch described a "Progress Quest"-like passive web game, but the reality was something much more involved.

Dear Virgin Media: if Net Neutrality is "bollocks" then you can get stuffed

May 7, 2008 11:22am

@36 - Anonyman: "Reprioritized" does not necessarily mean "deprioritized". Business customer WAN traffic would be reprioritized to a higher priority.

Return of the Moon-Nazis in Creative Commons-licensed film from Star Wreck creators

May 6, 2008 12:00pm

Looks awesome, but the trailer could be tightened up a bit and needs some more drama. The music for the first half worked well, but was a little too upbeat for the second half.

The bird poop seemed out of place (unless the rest of the film is comedic, but that is not implied at all by this trailer).

Get involved in production of community-made SF movie: Artemis Eternal

Charlie Rose interviews himself in edited video

April 22, 2008 10:50pm

I'd like to see Terry Gross or Larry King interview themselves. They don't actually contribute anything to their interviews.

Naomi Klein on social change

April 21, 2008 12:38pm

Naomi Klein is not an economist. Her bio says she is a "former Miliband Fellow at the London School of Economics", i.e. she gave some guest speeches.

Corporate money cannot be removed from politics until politicians have no power. Even if campaigns had no corporate donations, politicians' powerful influence will be sought through more covert gifts and favors.

If you think the Republicans and Democrats have a strangle hold on third parties, wait until incumbent Republicans and Democrats control the campaign purse strings of the third parties with "public" election financing! They will fund themselves and create bureaucratic mazes to keep out political challengers.

PETA offers $1 million prize for vat-grown meat

Why would a rich man marry a gold digger 25 years his junior if he doesn't actually want to have sex with her?

I think Fishstique's theory about promoting a play (like the stupid "I Hate You Sarah Marshall" movie) makes the most sense.

Time-lapse video of man trapped in an elevator for 41 hours

April 15, 2008 4:29pm

I had a co-worker who was stuck in our office building's elevator for about 40 minutes. She pressed the "Call Attendant" button and someone from the elevator maintenance company (not the building doorman) answered. The company's records didn't even show that they had a contract with the building. They came to rescue her, but she had to give them driving directions to get to the building! She was remarkably calm and didn't sue anyone.

Florida sells unlimited water-pumping rights in drought-stricken State Park to Nestle for $230

April 14, 2008 5:39pm

#15

"You're kidding, right? You're problem with this is that the water wasn't sold for fair market value? Are you perhaps missing the point?"

I was only partially kidding. My point wasn't that the water *should* be sold at fair market value. My point was that, given the high value of the water (monetary value and use of the water), should have been a clue that the "seller" was getting a bad deal for $230 and should NOT have sold the water rights.

Internet goes dark at Navajo reservation

April 14, 2008 5:30pm

OnSat did not cut off internet access "because they happen to have the misfortune of living in a country that forces them to stay in designated ghettos in order to retain the right to self-determination".

OnSat cut off internet access because someone didn't pay the bill. How much self-determination does the Navajo nation really have if they rely on Uncle Sam to pay their internet bill?

They should have a contingency plan with at least two internet providers. If one goes down, the other is available. When they're both up, then traffic is load-balanced between the two providers.

Florida sells unlimited water-pumping rights in drought-stricken State Park to Nestle for $230

April 10, 2008 5:17pm

This is what happens when valuable resources are *NOT* privatized. If Coca-Cola owned this water source, would it sell the water to Nestle for $230? Or if the Nature Conservancy owned this water source, would it sell the water to Nestle for $230? Probably not.

Government-controlled resources will inevitably be pilfered and polluted (using taxpayers' money). See also: Tragedy of the Commons.

IMF: one-in-four chance of global recession caused by US debt crisis

April 9, 2008 1:22pm

> Wake up, people, and take back the federal government.

Rather than taking back the federal government "for good, not evil", let us empower the states in our *federation*. The US was supposed to be a federation of states: 50 (today) legislative laboratories, not the royal families of Bushes and Clintons we have now. Over the years, the definition of the term "federal" became inverted.

My liberal friends complain about the federal government's power and misdeeds, but then believe everything will be solved when "Their Guy" wields that power. Don't they see that power attracts evil and the White House will continue to switch hands between Evil and Less Evil, as long as the power of our nation is housed there?

I'm not liberal; I'm liberaltarian.

For Love of Water: infuriating and incredible documentary about world's water-crisis

State Department makes bank by outsourcing passport production to dodgy overseas contractors

March 27, 2008 11:11am

I'm ok with the GPO printing *blank* passports overseas if it saves the government money. But in this case, the GPO is "making" money at the State Dept's cost. This is like me making a "profit" by borrowing money from myself (with interest!).

The news (and bloggers) spend much time theorizing about the causes of these economic problems, but I haven't read much about what the future looks like. How can a regular Joe with a mortgage and a 401k protect his assets for the next 10 years?

Is this the end of cheap food?

January 21, 2008 1:02pm

Various global economic bodies are forecasting rises of between 10 per cent and 50 per cent over the next decade.

These numbers don't mean much without context. How much did food (and non-food) prices rise over the past decades?

This Inflation Calculator claims inflation rose 28% from 1996-2006 and 41% from 1986-1996. So maybe "only" a 10% increase in food prices is a good thing?

Environmentalists should be loving this because it will make locally-grown food that doesn't use petroleum-based fertilizers more price-competitive.

(And hardcore environmentalists might enjoy the population reduction.)
