Alice In Wonderland syndrome

February 21, 2008 3:44am

Wow, I get this occasionally too. Not when I was kid, oddly enough, but in the past 10 years or so. Mostly when I'm falling asleep, but even now sitting at my desk - it feels like my feet are at the same time faaar away on the end of very long legs, and really close up as if my legs were very short. I sometimes get it with my hands, but it's generally my feet and legs. Odd.

Weaponized diamond engagement ring

February 21, 2008 3:31am

Well caught, #1 - I read that and didn't even notice it :)

I'd prefer a ring where the stone swivels - so you can use it non-lethal mode normally (to avoid cutting yourself or others to the bone), but then turn it round when necessary.

Waiters use nodding trick to boost restaurant tabs

January 29, 2008 3:14am

Two points:

1) I order what I want. There is no way that someone touching the table, or nodding, is going to influence my decision.

2) Tipping is very much culture/country specific, so there's no point arguing what the 'correct' rate is. Here it's generally 10%.

Why it's good to leave your WiFi open

January 11, 2008 3:24am

Wow, you guys live in nice countries. Here in ZA, bandwidth is so expensive, you don't dare let anyone else use even just a little bit of it. Plus, the average cap is just 1Gb, so there's really not that much to go around.

That said, even if was really cheap, I don't think I would leave mine open, for all of the reasons listed above.

TSA's new forbidden item: >2 gm lithium batteries

December 29, 2007 8:26am

@23(slamorte):

Why fly? Because it's difficult to travel across an ocean by train, bus, car or ferry.

Warner to sell no-DRM MP3s on Amazon

December 27, 2007 11:05pm

Yay, now if only Amazon would actually sell these MP3's to the rest of the world....

Important tip: acne medication removes pen marks from dolls

December 21, 2007 2:59am

The scary thing is that my contact lens solution works wonders for removing pen marks from skin - I'd guess it would work on dolls too. Makes me wonder what I'm putting in my eyes, though.

Another person turns blue from colloidal silver

December 21, 2007 2:57am

Elastoplast make colloidal silver plasters nowdays, but I've been a bit wary of them since I first heard about argyria. I'd guess that the amounts are small enough, and absorbed infrequently enough, that it wouldn't be a problem, but I'd still not use them on little kids.

UK Police seize amateur photographer's film

December 19, 2007 3:47am

@deejayqueue (11): you need to hack your laptop to get it to stay on when closed? On mine, I go something like power settings -> on close -> do nothing :)

Icelandic tourist to US held for two days, shackled, deported -- over a ten-year-old visa mistake

December 18, 2007 3:35am

Going back to one of the first few posts, on how tourism has dropped even though the dollar is so weak - has anyone noticed that visa fees have been increased from $100 to $130? That was pretty unaffordable before, especially for, say, a family of four going on a dream holiday to Disney World. Now, it's just far too expensive. Combine that with the entry procedures, and how many people still want to go on holiday there?

The really ironic thing is that they're claiming the increase is to pay for the fingerprinting and other checks!

Free patterns for folded cardboard furniture

December 6, 2007 3:44am

I must be missing something. How do you get from a pattern that can be printed on any printer, to something that's big enough for a child to sit on?

I went through their "step by step" sample, but that was just a teeny shape, so it's didn't really clarify that somewhat important step.

Killing a Pleo robotic dinosaur -- video

December 6, 2007 3:28am

@38: Is it moral to have children, knowing that they will feel pain as part of the experience of being human?

Freaknomics and Bruce Schneier -- the interview

December 5, 2007 2:56am

Clearly Bruce doesn't pay per Gig for data :-) Try that here in SA and you'd be bankrupt within 5 minutes!

Magazine subscription cards are a pack of lies

December 3, 2007 3:40am

Wow, At $70 per year for an international subscription, it looks like I don't have to worry about subscription cards, since there's no way I'd subscribe in the first place! Particularly compard to the $10 cost for those in the US. Can shipping really cost 6 times the price of the magazine?

Schoolteacher in Sudan on trial for naming teddy bear Muhammad

November 30, 2007 3:16am

@Andrew Denny:

I don't see anything odd in that; the anonymous commentator was saying that you were brave, not that he (or she) was.

@Flipa:

On a similar line, I was wondering whether the offence was more because of allowing the children to vote, than the actual naming of the bear.

Google says spammers are giving up

November 29, 2007 2:55am

Odd. I've been seeing a lot more spam in the last week or so - obvious spam that really should have been picked up by Gmail's filter.

Vinegar as wonder substance

November 13, 2007 3:03am

I've used vinegar to clean limescale off taps and shower heads - works great, but the whole house smells like vinegar for ages!

Lapland's Elfing classes

November 7, 2007 3:02am

I was in Lapland on holiday last Christmas :-)

Must say, I don't think I'd have the patience to be trained as an elf. Too many clueless tourists and excited kiddies!

Tasered and shot with a beanbag gun for videotaping warrantless police search

October 17, 2007 5:11am

Okay, I give up. What's a beanbag gun? Google has lots of references to police using them, but I can't find anything explaining what it actually is.

Crazy EULA makes you agree to a bunch of other EULAs

October 12, 2007 4:29am

Pity, because it actually seems like nice app - for those saying "what does IE need a web viewer for", it's an add-on for windows mobile users. Pocket IE doesn't allow tabs or multiple windows, and this adds that functionality.

UK gov't to Heathrow: fix your bloody security queues

October 5, 2007 4:56am

Actually, I've found Heathrow to be far better than Gatwick, which was a nightmare. I've barely queued at all at Heathrow.

Problem is, how much can Heathrow actually do? Some things will help (like longer tables, suggested above); but some things are beyond their control (relaxing the one carry on bag rule). But hopefully this will start putting pressure on those silly rules...

Microsoft selling DRM-free MP3s in Zune store

October 3, 2007 11:09pm

@Sam

The Zune syncs via wi-fi? Hmm, I might have to start looking into a Zune when my ipod's battery finally dies completely!

Welcome to the new Boing Boing!

August 31, 2007 4:37am

To re-iterate a lot of the comments above: like the design, somewhat; the left padding makes it better; don't like the font, don't like the fact that the headings blend into the text a bit too much; like the comments, but would like major points added to the post itself like you used to do. And if there are going to be lots of comments per post, threading might be nice.

What I really don't like is that it now looks awful when reading on my phone (HTC Wizard). Probably at least partly my phone's fault, since it does a bit of reformatting to fit everything on the screen without horizontal scrolling, but now there's a *huge* amount of whitepace that I have to scroll through to get to the text - which also means that I can't see how far I've read, and how much there is left, since the scrollbar thumb thingy is already as small and low down as it can be. The headlines also blend into the text terribly on the phone, and the link roundups are unreadable. Obviously you can't test on every single device, but it does make the site fairly unusable on my phone :(
