Slate: Giving laptops to poor schoolkids is pointless

June 13, 2008 11:23pm

"This discussion has been going on for quite awhile in the field of education. Not just poor but the use of computers in the classroom. I think the context of this debate is whether giving kids a computer is going to help them learn in school."

And that's assuming that school (in the Western sense, and in the state it's in today) is even the best path for these kids. Or anyone, for that matter. Why not let kids discover knowledge on their own, using these computers and their own creativity? Saying that these computers are only there to fuel the motor of modern American fact-memorizing education is discrediting the computer's inherent ability to bring out the bright in children.

What is on Keith's tongue?

Wait, did BoingBoing just become Fark? Did a website lap another website? This is the most compelling race I've ever seen.

The Mouse Phone is painted like Mickey's mutant brother (Update: it's not Mickey at all!)

May 29, 2008 12:49pm

I don't like to think of the lack of research in this article as indicative of the larger failings of blogging, but as a brilliant narrative in the style of a future archaeologist who discovers this object decades after its time, trying to figure out what it is and what it may do.

Skooba, Targus among first TSA-approved laptop bags

May 23, 2008 4:21pm

I Heart TSA? Shouldn't that be I Heart The TSA? Come on, Drew Carey. I know your politics are misguided and your career choices are hit and miss, but at the very least check your comedy for grammatical errors.

Who really gives a shit about MP3s killing the album?

April 25, 2008 12:07pm

I'm the same way with albums, but usually only when the artist cares enough to make their album one cohesive piece of art. Britney, for example, just cares about singles and fills out the rest of her albums with throwaway songs (insert joke here about all her songs being throwaway songs).

While I often listen to my collection on random, I have a lot of albums that have interstitial tracks, or short intro tracks that get played, which is jarring.

Experiment: 96% of passers-by ignore famous artist's street painting

April 23, 2008 1:37pm

I like reading people's dissemenation of the video more than the experiment itself. Art is all about dialog, it's about finding out who we are as humans. Maybe the video is the experiment itself?

The Internet is maddening for the blind

April 18, 2008 12:18pm

I'm a big advocate of accessibility on the web, but for the most part big websites just don't care. It's not financially viable, in their opinions, to cater to the small percentage of blind or low-sighted people online. With some skillful css, however, you can make your site super easy to read for anyone.

I can't tell you how many times I argued with my last boss about this kind of stuff. They wouldn't let me do accessible ALT tags. For logos they'd make me put the name of the company and a little tagline instead of "Company name [logo]", for example.

X10: "Honestly, we don't give a shit about branding"

April 16, 2008 9:13am

X10 is a miserable company. A few years ago, one of their recruiters called me up and wanted me to come in for an interview. They had seen my various websites and liked the fact that I did cartooning and podcasting and what have you. I went in and the president wanted to give me a job where I would come up with a social media website for X10 users, with podcasts and cartoons and all sorts of stuff, ribbing lightly on X10's products. One look at their website and you can see that they just don't give a shit. I rejected their offer. Later I found out that the president was booted two weeks after my interview. He was super shady and never above board with answers. He made sure to point out, though, that X10 wouldn't ever go away because of a few big Chinese investors. So, job security!

50 Years of LEGO: Nine Sets I Have Known and Loved

January 28, 2008 2:13pm

is it sad that I knew exactly what your list was going to be because those are EXACTLY the sets that I would have chosen? Just sayin'.

We used to take the cannons from the pirate ship and use them for arm-cannons for lego mecha. Complete with legs that walk and a cockpit for a driver. So cool.

I picked this up and it's fantastic. We did a fun interview with Nick a few years ago, back when PBF first was getting started. It's here if anyone is interested in checking it out. http://weeklygeekshow.com/archives/theweeklygeek_pbf.mp3

HOWTO make a Senior Remote with only five big, friendly buttons

December 28, 2007 10:28am

An even better design for the remote would remove the abstract abbreviations and go for instantly recognizable iconography, embossed so you can just feel your way around it.

Credit Card Money Clip Concept

October 23, 2007 9:17am

Pork Musket has a point, though it is nifty. Shame you can't really cut your existing credit cards to shape, as most of the stuff on the face is important, and most of the stuff on the back takes up too much room.
