How con-men make their faces look trustworthy

August 20, 2008 12:06pm

"In reality, of course, cheekbone shape and eyebrow arc have no relationship with honesty.".

Really? Are we positive about this? I mean, there's probably not a correlation, but I'm wary of any truth that's so obvious that nobody bothers to test it.

Debate coaches scream at each other

August 20, 2008 11:15am

Had I been there, I would have been really annoyed with that woman who got on the chair at the end. She yelled at everybody except the two people who actually caused the problem. Everyone else seemed to be acting maturely and professionally. Why did they have to be shouted at by that self-important harpy?

Also, I'm with Marrz: the best part is when the guy who just pulled his pants down says he's not acting immaturely.

The Manhattan Project Poll on the Use of Atomic Weapons, July 1945.

August 6, 2008 8:42pm

Okay, maybe somebody can enlighten me on this. As I understand it, before we dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, Japan basically offered to surrender, with the only condition being that the Emperor be left in place. We refused that and dropped two bombs until they agreed to an unconditional surrender.

If my understanding is correct (and please let me know if you think it isn't), then dropping the bombs seems kinda pointless. The Emperor was a figurehead anyway, so we killed all those people for what? To prove a point? Especially since at the end of the day we left the Emperor in place anyhow.

Am I wrong? I haven't totally made up my mind yet, so here's your chance to convince me one way or the other.

Steamy tell-all memoir by a Disneyland "Jack Sparrow"

May 22, 2008 10:31am

From the details in the article (a "Hillock" who was on "Veronica Mars"), it has to be this guy. I can see how he'd make a decent Jack Sparrow.

US Postal mail rate hikes screw micro-publishers: Thanks, Time Warner!

May 18, 2008 8:50pm

Why does the government even in the parcel-delivery business? It makes about much sense as a government-owned ice cream company. How about we sell off the post office just like Japan is doing and let other companies deliver mail too?

LP collection comes with a battery operated toy car that is a record player.

February 20, 2008 10:48am

Yeah, I had one of those VW van ones too. They sound cool in theory, but what nobody realizes until you get one is that the sound is always screwed up due to the Doppler Effect. So it's basically like listening to a record that is constantly slowing down and speeding up. Wears thin pretty quick.

Texas legislator explains her fraudulent voting on lack of "bathroom breaks"

September 30, 2007 4:09pm

I guess I don't really understand why this is a big deal. Is there any evidence that legislators are actually stealing other legislators' votes? This isn't really comparable to a large-scale, secret ballot election--this is a public vote where everybody knows what's going on. If she tells her deskmate "I have to go tinkle, can you vote "yes" on HR 1225 when it comes up for me?", why is that a big deal? She's still voting, she's just not physically hitting the big red button on her desk. What am I missing here?

Wall Street Journal editor's ordeal with Kmart security

September 20, 2007 10:55am

"As for my dismay at the way I was treated, there was little I could do, other than take my future business to Wal-Mart or Target."

Well, yeah, that and complain about it in a full-length article in the largest newspaper in the United States.
