New York Sun column: "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone"

April 11, 2008 12:00pm

"As if keeping kids under lock and key and helmet and cell phone and nanny and surveillance is the right way to rear kids."

She's right. I see far too many kids who live this life, and you can seem them squinting in the sunshine sometimes, figuratively speaking, once they're out in the real world. I was already riding bicycles and buses wherever I wanted to be at that age (of course, I turned out lousy), but we were allowed to do whatever we pleased unsupervised (we're talking late 60s, early 70s). I look at kids/parents today and it feels like I grew up on another planet.

Al Jaffee profile in NY Times

March 30, 2008 6:47pm

I always used to find them on the newsstand - folded.

Jaffee's funniest momemnts for me was when the cartoon he was drawing called for dog poop. He'd draw two little link sausages. Funnier than the article.

IT security-themed series debuts on Court TV

December 25, 2007 9:45pm

Where's the superintelligent/gorgeous woman on the team? You know, just like on CSI...Cold Case...Law and Order...NCIS...Every Other Drama...I can't buy into it unless there's some supermodel who would, in real life, be totally out of place!

Star Trek's "Galactically Hot" women

December 18, 2007 9:11am

Sally Kellerman? You've got to be joshing me.

Wired founder starts chocolate company

December 10, 2007 8:19pm

"Tcho?" "Gesundheit!" And at about $40 a pound, I'll have a caviar and filet mignon sandwich instead.

Mindwebs: Free old science fiction radio plays

November 13, 2007 10:08am

If you like this, I suggest a formidable NBC show from the 1950-51 radio season, Dimension X.

http://www.archive.org/details/OTRR_Certified_Dimension_X

You can also find a companion show called X Minus One by searching on archive.org, it came later as network radio flamed out (1957). It's also excellent.

And yes, I am biased towards radio drama, it's a lost art in the United States.

Vinegar as wonder substance

November 12, 2007 5:09pm

Rubbing apple cider vinegar on affected areas helps minimize the symptoms of shingles, plus it keeps other people away because you smell AWFUL. Trust me - I know.

Corrupt Congressmen say no financial aid to schools that don't send money to DRM services and bust file-sharers

November 11, 2007 12:09pm

"We very much support the language in the bill, because we basically wrote it and our chums inserted it sans edit, which requires universities to provide evidence that they have a plan for implementing a technology to address illegal file sharing."

Condo ass. claims copyright on Chicago's Marina City Towers

November 9, 2007 8:26am

Serious Headline Tip: Use assn. to abbreviate association.

Frivolous headline tip: If an association is doing something stupid, abbreviate it with "ass."

MLB rips off fans who bought DRM videos

November 7, 2007 8:08am

Thank God, being a Royals fan has finally paid off for once! We've had no games worth watching twice for twenty years!

Mac trojan in the wild

October 31, 2007 8:16pm

This doesn't make sense. Mac users are generally asexual.

Led Zep says "oh fine ALRIGHT" to digital music sales

October 18, 2007 3:11pm

Great post (That's The Way), but Your Time is Gonna Come.

Klingon Kama Sutra

September 27, 2007 2:29pm

You know, I didn't turn out perfect, but if I show stuff like this to my parents and they start to think how I could have turned out? It gives them a warm feeling.

Titan missile silo for sale

September 27, 2007 7:21am

From eBay:

"I think it would make a really neat resort/camp/retreat facility."

Call me crazy, but an underground concrete bunker has about as much charm as...well...an underground concrete bunker. Unless you hang some rugs on the wall or something.

See-thru pinball machine

September 25, 2007 1:42pm

It may be beautiful in person, but it takes away from the Mystery of Pinball.

Pinball is representative of the Good Old Days, all right. Having squandered most of my misspent youth playing pinball in the 70s and 80s, I really miss it sometimes. It's impossible to find a decently-maintained machine anymore.

Burqinis and the new Muslim chic

September 20, 2007 8:39am

Sort of looks like a daytime Ninja outfit.

The View's flat earther blames "senior poopy moment"

September 19, 2007 8:34pm

If Miss South Carolina Teen USA (with her brilliant geography answer) is worried about getting a job, she shouldn't bother. There will always be a place for her.

Giant email leak from MediaDefender -- MAFIAA hitmen

September 16, 2007 10:36am

"I'm sure we'll see all kinds of interesting things in the coming weeks" is the understatement of the year. Torrents don't interest me all that much but Corporate Anti-Piracy Soap Operas? Somebody call Frank and Anne Hummert.

Google Lunar X Prize: $30MM prize to put robot on moon

September 13, 2007 12:40pm

Wait a minute, there are already robots on the moon. Ask Wallace and Gromit.

NSF's Dark Web project will "snag extremists and terrorists online"

September 12, 2007 11:37am

Now if they could only harness the technology to rid the Internet of lousy comic strips.

NASA could use a better slogan. Got one?

September 7, 2007 1:41pm

"The surly in 'The surly bonds of earth.' "

Relief map rug

September 4, 2007 5:06pm

Oh, man, the cat threw up on the rug.
Where?
Arkansas!
Eh, nobody will notice.

Death-themed novelties from Pushin' Daisies

September 4, 2007 12:08pm

Boy that is beautiful. What child wouldn't want a hearse with its own coffin?

Also: I've talked to a number of funeral directors in my day and I've never met one who didn't have a wonderful sense of humor. I guess you'd have to.
