I wouldn't worry about difficulty level and not knowing how we think. As the solvers it's up to us to learn how the setter thinks. It's like cryptic crosswords in the broadsheets. They always tell you who the setter is, so you know their 'style'.

With that I guess 'Star Wars' and FWIW I think mine have been too easy.

Small, light, convenient & cheap PC* thing. This development is the way forward. Trust me, I've been dreaming of this ever since I had a computer and read Sci-Fi.
The creation of this type of thing is more important than that useless waste of silicon the iPhone**.
Sorry I can't be more coherent, it's late, I need my bed, but my heart sings at every new incarnation of the EEE concept.
This is the sort of shit that will make up for the fact that the I've not got a silver suit and flying car in the 21st Century.

*By PC I mean *Personal* Computer, not necessarily Windows PC.

**The iPhone will hopefully be relegated to a foot note of history for it's marketing strategy and slightly interesting interface development.

What the transcript doesn't show is the PM windows I had open and was trying to pay attention to along with the main room as well.

If I'm not working Friday night, I'll be along for the Rule34 game. Hanging out live with people on-line is great fun. Kind of like having a night out, but stopping in. I can eat, drink and smoke. Plus I can go to the pub after the game and have a night out, out, as well as a night out, in.

Having read Mr Brownlee's work on Ecto' I guess the words: Squid, tentacle, Fez and Cthulu may turn up in this game.

I saw this post on my RSS feed and had a few bets with myself before opening it.

I won the money on those two bets.

The only bet I lost was that there would be accusations of hand-in-glove, back scratching with the manufacturers of the garment and BoingBoing (unless those comments were disemvoweled and I couldn't read them)

Kind of with #13 here. What about a palm IIIxe it takes AAA batteries and a nokia 5110, an old school mobi' with a great battery life and spare batteries easily available. There is a cable you can use to link the 2 together to get online. Plus there was a Portable keyboard available for the IIIxe.

Otherwise I'd start making a list of what tasks you want to carry out whilst in the wilds. Focusing on these may give you some idea of the tech' that would be suitable.

Maybe take a lower spec'/more primative machine and do stuff online with Google Docs, or online photo editing app's. (http://tinyurl.com/29eh9s)

Which book should Neil Gaiman put online for free?

February 13, 2008 7:19am

Not 'Anansi Boys' I struggled to finish it. It kicked in enough in the last 1/4 to make finishing it worthwhile, but I was disappointed, as I'd had Neil Gaiman recommended to me as an Author I should read and would probably enjoy.

So with that in mind, could somebody suggest the next book by Mr gaiman I should try?

Upcoming Phones I Actually Find Interesting: Nokia N96 and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

February 13, 2008 6:41am

Nokia FTW. I'm a big fan of Nokia phones. Especially the Communicator series, because of the qwerty keyboard, that I could thrash out large blog posts on whilst sitting in the pub. Nokia seem to have got their various interfaces and software just right.

The 9300 was nearly the perfect phone for me. The 'i' version wasn't available from my Phone Co. The WiFi would have been icing on the cake. Then I went and lost it. (No I wasn't drunk)

As it was a works phone it was replaced. With a piece of shit HTC touch. Windows mobile still isn't right, even version 6 is still shonky for phone use. The Sony phone above looks nice, but with WM on I'd steer well clear.

My personal phone is a Nokia9500, yes it's a brick, that bit I hate, but it has a qwerty keyboard, Camera, Bluetooth & WiFi.

The E90 is the current phone I'm lusting after, looks like Nokia has put together another winner (as far as I'm concerned) looking at the specs'.

Oh and just as an after thought THE Best phone ever made was the Nokia6300i
battery life for ever, could get a signal when no-one else could, clear sound & great volume (I work in a sometimes noisy environment)

Having said that...

Rosie the Riveter: one of many finds in that LoC Flickr set

January 19, 2008 6:21pm

Blah blah 'Woman'. Blah blah 'African American' Blah blah.

Shut your mouths & open your eyes.

The post title in my RSS feed, using the phrase 'Rosie the Riveter', put my head in a WW II expectation. As soon as the picture appeared and I saw the colour.
No.
Not the person of colour, but the COLOUR in the photo, I was thrown.

I think of the past as Black & White, because I have B&W family pictures from the mid 60s, early 70s that look more 'old fashioned' than this picture. I have colour photos from the same period that look more 'old fashioned' than this picture.

'Stunning' is the right word to describe this picture.

The image is older than me. It's around the same age as my now dead Parents would be.

This picture looks like it could've been taken yesterday.

Sorry I'm rambling.

That's what happens when you're stunned.

It's made the past 'now'. It's made 60 years ago more real. Because the picture doesn't look 'old'.

Handpresso: bike pump espresso machine works without electricity

January 16, 2008 9:39pm

I like my enamel pot for making coffee. Yeah yeah I know I'm a heathen.
What sort of temperature do the coffee experts suggest for making espresso? I've got the message about pressure I think ;)
It's got me thinking. I've got an old bike tyre somewhere. I feel a hack coming on.
Oh yeah final question for the experts:
Am I right in thinking I have to 'unleash' the pressure through the coffee, rather than just pumping away with a bike pump to force water through? TIA

If anyone fancies a go at seeing how this system works and if they're any good at it. They might want to try this quiz at the BBC website:

It's based on the FACS system, which commentors seem to think is the sytem that might be used by the TSA.

TSA to punish fliers for facecrime

January 2, 2008 5:02pm

From the film 'Team America'
Chris: Susan Sarandon.
Susan Sarandon: [bound up with rope, sitting on a small bench] Oh thank God. We have to stop the ceremony! Kim Jong Il is mad! Here, let me loose. I'll show you where the theater is!
Chris: All right.
Gary: No! Chris! Stay away from her!
Chris: Fuck you, she wants to help us!
Gary: No, Chris. She's acting....
Susan: I am not. The others tied me up because I wouldn't go with their plan.
Gary: Your skills are fading with age, Ms. Sarandon.
Susan: [her facial expression darkens] You shall die a peasant's death! [bends down and breaks out of the rope that bound her and whips out and begins firing semiautomatics at Gary and Chris] YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!! [Gary quickly fires back and keeps the bullets coming as he backs her up against a balcony. She tumbles over it and falls to the ground at the main palace entrance. Her body parts splatter all over the place. Chris and Gary walk up to the balcony and look over and down]
Chris: Jesus Titty-fucking Christ, I ...could've sworn she was telling the truth.
Gary: That's why they call it acting. [turns around to leave] Come on, we've gotta find Lisa.

Maybe Terrorists will now take acting lessons? :)

Workshop on designing cute interactive media

December 3, 2007 5:32pm

Cute makes me want to maul things (to death). It's why I turn off the graphic smileys on any forum I'm on. It's why I changed my Windows XP 'look'. It's why I gave up on Myspace and YMash.

Cute is for fat lasses that have a whole menagerie of soft toys on the parcel shelves of their car, for fat goth girls that dress in purple crushed velvet. Cute is coloured pink and for 12 year old girls.

I want an interface that looks like it knows what it's doing. As a user I feel "motivated in a happy, positive manner" when I can navigate round something properly because it's laid out clearly.

Some bug eyed cartoon character is not the way to please me. It's the way to make me wonder were I left my axe and what I did with that piece of lead pipe & the heavy stick with the nail in.

Cute is the reason I'd punch a Panda.

Cute is the reason people hate that fucking paper clip so much.
