If computers were cars, which they are not

August 5, 2008 8:41pm

This is pretty much the same analogy used by Neal Stephenson in In the Beginning was the Command Line way back in 1999 ... in his words, Linux was a tank:

These are not old-fashioned, cast-iron Soviet tanks; these are more like the M1 tanks of the U.S. Army, made of space-age materials and jammed with sophisticated technology from one end to the other. But they are better than Army tanks. They've been modified in such a way that they never, ever break down, are light and maneuverable enough to use on ordinary streets, and use no more fuel than a subcompact car. These tanks are being cranked out, on the spot, at a terrific pace, and a vast number of them are lined up along the edge of the road with keys in the ignition. Anyone who wants can simply climb into one and drive it away for free.

My old sig file:
“I’ll RTFM when manufacturers learn to WTFM!”

Have you tried reading the average set of instructions that comes with most consumer electronics? When geeks have problems making heads-or-tails of your instructions, what makes you think that the average consumer is going to find them any less frustrating?

Actually, I think things are much simpler. Michelle is just plain jealous. Nobody wants to see her wearing nothing but a glazed kaffiyeh ...

Well, if we use Michelle's own "logic", then the photo on Sadly, No!'s website (http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/9602.html) clearly proves that not only is Michelle herself clearly a terrorist sympathizer, but she is also supporting the Scottish National Liberation Army ...

Vintage aviation hostess photos

Ah, the stories my parents told of the days before de-regulation ... yes, you did have smoking ... but in return you got miniskirted air-hostesses who were required to have nurses training, and airlines competed on service ... none of that charging-$6-for-the-free-inflight-meal (which was actually edible in those days) ...

The process is called "entrainment":

The board on cans allows the process to happen much faster, but two clocks sitting on the mantle next to each other will entrain over a couple days.
