U.S. Has No Remaining Grain Reserves
June 10, 2008 6:54pm
Slow news day at Boing Boing? We get some generic plastic Office Max cable thingie, a Dr Boing Boing what this post and now this link to a lame conspiracy sit whose #1 mission is "To reveal the Darkside's secret Plan 2000 for total world control by our present evil world leaders."
What is on Keith's tongue?

damn someone already beat me to the cymothoa reference.
Sharon Stone suggests earthquake in China caused by "karma"
May 29, 2008 7:33pm
As others have said, way to talk her words out of context -- just listen to the entire statement and you can see that she only made a hypothetical question to reinforce her later statement.
Also, Boing Boing should stick to what it's good at and leave lame hollywood celeb gossip to Gawker and other rags.
Koss Sparkplug headphones are unusable thanks to a goofy mute
May 28, 2008 7:31pm
The Koss Sparkplugs are just horrible on so many levels.
For a good inexpensive pair of buds I highly recommend the JVC Marshmallows. Good sound quality with decent bass but not so much that it overpowers the mid-range (I'm looking at you skullcandies with your overkill bass). Also, they're great for iphone's because you can easily trim the external soft plastic around the jack (leaving the protective internal plastic) and it fits perfecting in the recessed housing.

Ben Goldacre of Bad Science debunked this whole pixie dust finger fiasco on his blog today.

Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set

You'll have to pry my big bulky platform boots from my cold dead feet.
Texas students shut down highway and march 7 miles to vote in gerrymandered district
February 23, 2008 10:17am
Gotta say this is one of my favorite examples of civil disobedience that I've seen in a while. The students have a legitimate grievance with the polling place being 7 miles away. Sure they could take a bus or car pool but voting should be easy and part of your day. Not putting a polling place on campus where a large population is congregated is inane.
Commerce Dept docs: Cheney and oil execs decided to take Iraq's oil in spring 2001
February 21, 2008 1:02pm
SEE is right. Presidents and VPs can only be impeached for "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors."
Plotting war and seizing oil assets of other countries is not technically a crime here in the US -- international law sure but that doesn't count for impeachment. The Valerie Plame scandal was the closest we got to pinning an actual an actual impeachable offense on anyone in the Bush admin. Sure they've lied left and right, but it's not perjury if it's not under oath and they've been pretty good at avoiding having the main people go under oath.
I wish it were otherwise, but the impeachment movement doesn't seem to have a leg to stand on.
US Customs TSA confiscating laptops
February 7, 2008 7:14pm
Just have your computer auto logged in with a guest account (that isn't titled guest account or something). Add a few generic files a bit of generic web surfing history and presto you've got a computer they can log into without any important info.
9 outta 10 they won't even think to ask if there is another account on the machine. Extra points if your sporting a Mac or Linux box as they probably won't know how to use it to figure out if there is another account.
iPhone's "Location" feature helps explain open cell platforms
January 22, 2008 4:14pm
Another post praising the panacea of openness and stressing functionality and features while ignoring user interface. I love to geek out too but I like my iPhone because of the fact that I don't have to install new components and add drivers and software that may or may not have a UI that is easy to use without requiring a manual or a tech support forum.
Pirate's Dilemma slideshow video -- pirates will save the world

Interesting slideshow, style is kinda like what Zero Puncuation would sound like if he took some valium and got all serious and political.

Pilot to TSA: Let my people go!
December 30, 2007 12:08pm
I and others I know have been saying this ever since these farcical rules were created. Sadly there is no means to protest this. If you want to fly you have to play by their rules. Your first amendment rights are basically suspended in airports. The TSA is basically its own little dictatorship part of the US in name only. Our congress has no will to assert power over TSA and the homeland security dept. and we all know Bush and gonna do anything. Thus we are probably stuck with these stupid rules for quite some time -- maybe once there is a seachange in or country's culture -- maybe.
Matias Folding Keyboard
November 16, 2007 3:51pm
The keyboard shown here which only folds in half seems downright primitive in comparison to the awesome palm keyboards that folded in fourths.
I still have my old palm folding keyboard in a box somewhere. I haven't used a palm in years but I don't have the heart to throw away such a lovely piece of tech. Hopefully someone will figure out a way to interface my iPhone with it.

Hey all,
Seems we had a couple glitches over at NifNaks, which caused people to get kicked out of their shopping cart. These issues are all fixed now.
If you were annoyed and quit the checkout process before your order was finished please come back and make your order.

Personally, I don't care about the gossip behind the action of deleting posts. That was never an issue. The issue was the deletion itself. Xeni's response that she and the other BB cohorts will talk about it more in the future is a weak stance that doesn't answer the core of the problem.
Frankly, I don't see why the posts had to be deleted anyway. It seems that the personal got entangled in the professional. The posts could have been left there gaining digital dust and nothing would have come of it.
Sure this is "your blog" but it moved beyond a just a personal blog a long time ago. It has a life of it's own now propelled forward more by it's readers than by it's authors. BB gadgets and BBTV are prime examples of this. They are ideas born by you but ultimately exist due to the interest or disinterest of your audience.
The deletions was also an idea born by you, but in contrast to BBgadgets ultimately it failed in the eye of the majority of your audience. You knew this would be an issue which is why it was done quietly.
A better reaction to all of this would have been "I'm sorry I'll reinstate the old posts and let's move on from all this." But instead what we get is "sorry not changing anything, but next time the BB cohorts will meet in secret before we delete posts."
