7-year-old boy removed from father and placed in state custody over mistaken order of hard lemondade
April 29, 2008 5:42pm
My gut tells me to be on the father's side with this, but in fact, he screwed up.
To those claiming he is in the clear because as an academic he's allowed to be ignorant of cultural trends, well, he's a dad, and he's responsible for his child's well being. He should have read the label. If you asked him I'm sure he would agree. If you asked the kid's mom, I'm absolutely sure she'd agree.
To those of you claiming that he should be able to give his kid whatever he wants, you're on a very hazy line that quickly moves to 'he's my kid and I can do anything to him that I want'. Ignoring that, because it's boring, I'd like to point out that he was in a public place on private property (I'm guessing the stadium is privately owned, I don't know). In that situation he doesn't get to make the rules. If he's in his own house it is a different story.
This went too far. The most likely reason is that the father didn't react properly. At some point he probably said something that either pissed someone off, or made the cops suspicious. Who's to say he didn't buy the drink on purpose. He probably hates baseball.
60% of world's paintings come from one village in China

I'm going with #16's comparison of learning to paint being similar to learning to drive a car.
These craftsmen are the bus drivers of the painting world. They take you to the race track, you might give them a $1.25 to get there, but the big bucks go to the talented professionals in the race.
Not everybody likes NASCAR, but most people have either seen or ridden on a bus.

There was a time when I imagined my life as a Father being one happy and project after another. Having grown up without a Father in my life I day deamed about the TV dad coming home to me. The Courtship of Eddie's Father senario of two males bonded together walking laughing and feeding eachother's souls with the nonsence of compaionship. Planning complicated and interesting scientific tasks that would involve the use of crazy everyday materials around the home to make wonderous toys for us to play with together. We ould be so proud of each other. So when I came upon this project I jumped. I gathered my young daughter and son together and with assorted things lying about we journed forth on the bonding mission that task oriented projects accomplish.had my kids making masks for their bionicles out of old zipper folders and milk jugs. Eventually my wife came home and freaked over the melting of plastic in the oven.
"White nose syndrome" wiping out bats in the Northeast US

About a year ago there was a report that bats migrating up from mexico and through the southwest were in danger because development is altering the food supply along their migration route. I wonder if they've evolved a response to this.

Arizona students stage hug-a-thon to protest 2-second hug rule detentions
March 6, 2008 12:41pm
So, I live in AZ. Last week my son brought home a flyer explaining that if my first grader is on the playground and either hits or is hit by another student the school is required by state law to call the police and CPS.
Let me say that again. If a six year old loses his/her temper and hits another student, the school is required by law to report it to the police.
At least they can still hug.

All 20 somethings are stupid, fired up, and preachy about every cause they take on. Those of us that are grown up wouldn't expect you to prepare something special for us. We assume that every piece of food you put out has meat in it because you are too much of a jackass to think about your guests.
Hopefully you have good taste in beer.

#10 I would say being old sucks, but getting old rocks.
Those balloon hats were great. Especially considering those people are in a building without any bright colors. I just spent a day working in a convention hall with only subtle variations of gray. I thought I might die. These poor people have to live in a hole like that.
By the way, It's not so tear-jerky if you turn the volume off.

Analyzing Bush based on his favorite painting
February 1, 2008 5:53pm
I think it's sad that the leader of the free world would hang a piece of crap like that up in his office and call it his "favorite painting" with all the insight of a high school sophomore that just won a pink ribbon at the state fair.
It is sad, but I'm not surprised. Americans hate art. That's why they say stupid things like it "means different things for different people" or "open to interpretation". They hate it because if they want to enjoy it they'd need to actually think.
Americans love illustration. Americans hate art.

Vegetarian survival kit
January 9, 2008 11:07am
Well, Mujadaddy
I find it odd that the first responses to a link designed to help vegetarians prepare for some sort of disaster is to irrationally and aggressively attack the life style. It is a good thing that this type of information is being posted. It will help a lot of people. Too many kids think they can live on french fries and milk shakes.
I rarely tell people I'm a vegetarian. It always ends up with the kind of crap that came out of this thread. It is strange that people are so threatened and defensive about what others choose to eat (or not eat).
Eat what you want, I couldn't care less.

"? the War" art show at Corey Helford in LA, Dec. 4, 2007
December 4, 2007 6:55pm
It'd be worth your time, Hirudo, to read the press release and scroll through the work thinking about the curatorial focus.
I have to go back to your original question. what is the point of art work that aims to just bring like minded people together? The obvious answer is, to bring like minded people together. From the press release "the first group show to exhibit original works ... solely designed to create iconic imagery for the new anti-war movement".
I agree with you, many of the images are cliche. They seem to lack the depth of thought this issue requires. But to be fair, they are meant to be "iconic imagery for the new anti-war movement". It's a rare artwork that's not going to come off as trite in that context. Hell, "Guernica" probably wouldn't even make it. If anything, the gallery is trying to draw a crowd by bringing in a group of hip artists under a popular and pseudo-revolutionary banner. Does this denigrate the medium? I'm not sure how it could. It's how the business works.
More than anything, I'm bothered by your suggestion that an artwork needs to be justified. A search for justification in every artwork would limit its expressive potential. The whole concept of justification shouldn't even be brought up. It limits observation by imposing undue personal bias.
I agree with you that the purpose behind the work is simplistic. I don't see much of a problem with that. Art is a tool, not some great esoteric thing. Simple ideas can sometimes have very powerful effects.

Hirudo- Uniting people is not a trivial task. It is also historically a fairly common use of art that goes back much further than 1968. The Pyramids, the Eiffel tower, the Sistene Chapel, The Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln Memorial, the American Flag, the murals of the Social Realists, graffiti art, the music of Metallica, and on.
Don't forget, also, these paintings were probably picked because they would make good posters. Posters being given out for free and all.

Hirudo, this obviously isn't artwork that is meant to change people's minds. It's artwork that brings like minded people together. Don't miss the point.
