There seems to be a mistake. How can there ever be EXTRA BACON???

Faubourg Tremé: new New Orleans docu

May 10, 2008 8:40pm

And, as usual here in New Orleans, this is the first anyone here's heard about it...

The Runt: Tiny, Rechargeable Stun Gun

It also looks like it would be incredibly easy to sneak one onto an airplane: "Ummm, it's an extra battery for my laptop... Wait, it's an MP3 player... A transistor radio?" Seeing that I've accidently brought a Leatherman tool on (forgot it was in my back pocket; no, the alarms didn't sound) it doesn't sound too farfetched.

Delta blues and Tuvan throat-singing: Paul Pena and Genghis Blues

January 19, 2008 6:18am

When Frank Zappa was dying from cancer, he held "soirees" in his studio. One of which featured the Throat Singers jamming with Johnny "Guitar" Watson, and the Chieftans. I saw a couple minutes of it on the A & E Zappa Biography show, but I'd LOVE to hear the whole set!

Metasonix "Fucking Fucker" G-1000 Tube Amp

Look here:

to see "Bill O'Reilley is a Putz" etched into the amp's PCB... Incidently. I'm quite offended by the name. You motherfucking fucker.

Individual, isloated Sgt Peppers vocal and instrumental tracks

January 8, 2008 8:05am

To #10. Brian Epstein's assistant did get signed releases from everyone. Apparently Sir Joe Lockwood wouldn't put the recording out without the release forms. There are a couple folks airbrushed out. For instance Leo Gorcey (empty space next to Huntz HAll) wanted a fee, so he was nixed. As was Hitler (for, ummm, other reasons).

David Lynch on the iPhone

This is great. I just downloaded it as an MP4, so I can watch it on the Nano.

Ether-drift-detecting machine from 1932

But... manipulation of the Aether is essential for the proper playing of the Moog Etherwave Theremin!

RE: Thriftstore LPs. Aside from alll the Christmas and religious records, I always find numerous copies of Herb Albert and the TJB's "Whipped Cream and Other Delights." At one time, I made it a point to buy a copy from every thrift store or garage sale I went to. Just have one copy now, though...

Make 12 on sale today

Today? That's odd; my newstand had them out when I was there last Sunday! (PS, the solar Xylo looks really neato!)

David Lynch's "invincible university" effort off to bad start in Germany

November 19, 2007 11:48am

Hitler was "not a good person who did terrible things." Was he a good person who did good things? How about a bad person who did good things? Sorry, can't help it... ;-)

Japanese "melody roads" play tunes as you drive over them

November 14, 2007 7:13am

Hmmm, I used to use the bumps on the Causeway bridge (New Orleans to Slidell over Lake Ponchatrain) to set the rhythm to the Ramones. Usually, it was just about the speed limit. "Chewin' out a rhythm on my bubble gum..." How about: "Drivin' out a rhythm in my Saturn Ion..."

Car repair chain sued for playing radio

October 9, 2007 6:09pm

Actually, it works the same here in the goood ol' US of A. When I was working the graveyard shift @ Kinko's in Central Florida (about 12 years ago), management made us remove ALL radios/boomboxes/what-have-you due to copyright issues. The ONLY music we were allowed to have was the satellite Muzak (which you couldn't hear whilst working due to lack of speakers behind the counter. Not to mention machine noise). But as a result, we got to stick "ASCAP approved!" stickers in the front window. I also used to drink a lot back then...

Yamaha Tenori-On Reviewed (Verdict: Neither Toy Nor Tool)

October 9, 2007 2:26pm

Well, I have some of Iwai's other music products: a SimTunes demo and Electroplankton (for the Nintendo DS). The SimTunes is interesting as a kiddy toy, but you can't really get rid of the background beats (@ least _I_ haven't figured out how ;-). It's really just a fun way to introduce kids to music with simulated bugs. Electroplankton is also a game, but I find it to be much more inspiring; I've used some of my EP creations in finished works. The Tenori-on appears to be a further refinement of Iwai's concepts. A sequencer + multiple sound sources + the ability to (rather convolutedly) add your own samples. I'd pick one up in a heartbeat, but the projected price (over a grand US) is the sore point. I guess you should try looking at it as a light producing sculpture that also makes sound...
