Hamster's Lunch at Coco's in Los Angeles

February 13, 2008 2:52pm

1) I'm all for BoingBoing getting loot, it's perfectly clear that you all hustle and supply us with amazing free content on a daily basis.

2) I've got no problems with the Honda sponsorship at all. Anyone that takes issue with it should read Joel Johnson's response in the comment thread (it's succinct, sincere and bad-ass - kudos Joel).

3) I do take issue with BoingBoing being affiliated with Microsoft for two reasons as listed below.
- BoingBoing has frequently been critical of MS in the past, either their DRM, delays/flaws of Windows and (I believe, though I haven't checked the archives) some humorous bits about Bill Gates appearing in Teen Beat and Steve Ballmer going apeshit on stage at a MS rally.
- Having used Windows Mobile in the past as well, I have to concur with previous posters, that it truly is horrible. Since when does BoingBoing support anything horrible other than Goatse?

I have the utmost faith in all of the BoingBoing team that they will continue to stick to their guns and post whatever the hell they want (and we love) and I recognize that ad sales and editorial are suppose to be separated like church and state, but this sponsorship still represents a bit of a slippery slope for me.

Regardless, I've still got love for BoingBoing and if this is what it takes to keep your babies momma happy and the tax man at bay - then I guess that's just how it goes.

Last DC power in NYC to shut down

November 16, 2007 8:59am

I recently finished reading "Edison and the Electric Chair: A Story of Light and Death" (http://www.amazon.com/Edison-Electric-Chair-Story-Light/dp/B000BZ6UOE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195232016&sr=8-1)
It centered around the battle between AC & DC, with the focal point being Edison's campaign to implement electric chairs as the most "humane" means of execution, provided they were running AC.
Really fascinating book - Edison was opposed to capital punishment his whole life, until he saw an opportunity to leverage it in such a way as to destroy his competition (primarily Westinghouse).
It also provided a fascinating snapshot into the origins of modern day power & illumination.
I strongly recommend it to any BB'ers that are down with Menlo Park.

Trailers From Hell/Lobotomy

Xeni,
Great episode, just a quick heads up - www.blogto.com is actually pronounced blog tee-oh (tdot, tdot-o and t-o) all being common abbrevs for Toronto.
Also, this billboard hack went up just prior to Toronto's annual Nuit Blanche, an "all night art thing" (/all night party) that took over the city last Saturday from 7:03pm 'til sunrise.
Here's a photo that sums up the vibe rather succinctly, folks on tricked out mobility scooters parked if front of a geodesic dome made from florescent light tubes...

Spicy food as anesthetic

For those that are interested in learning more about this, Herve This covers the phenomenon in his book "Molecular Gastronomy", a great read for any boingboing foodies out there...

Scopolamine: "Zombie drug" and astronaut anti-puke helper

September 28, 2007 8:29am

All this talk of Scopolamine being used as a remedy for motion sickness has reminded me of an amazing episode of "Mythbusters" in which they test out several anti-nausea solutions. Interestingly, the most effective for both test subjects was a ginger pill. Second most effective was an over-the-counter drug, which worked, but made both participants feel "drugged". I can't remember the line verbatim, but one of the test subjects said something to the effect of "I feel too drugged to be sick right now".
Here's an episode summary -
