Who'll pay $550 for the Treo Pro?
August 21, 2008 8:05am
Eh. I'd join in on the Palm's Dead stuff, but . . . haven't we been saying that for years and years now? True, I have no idea how they do it (aren't you supposed to make products that appeal to people, to stay in business?), but they keep sticking around.
I've got a Treo 755p (only because I accidentally smashed an old 650), and I have yet to come across a good reason to move away from that platform. It does everything I need, tho' perhaps in a less pretty way than, say, the iPhone. But the iPhone doesn't have a keyboard, and as much as that may seem to work for some, there is no way it's a decent replacement for those of us who are heavy text/email users. So until someone else can come out with a touchscreen/qwerty keyboard phone with an OS open to third party apps, I don't see moving away from a Treo at all.

Been there, done that. Not worth the trouble. Don't place things that are important to you in the hands of an organization that couldn't care less about it.
Murky Coffee's owner responds to espresso-over-ice kerfuffle
July 19, 2008 6:32pm
Oh, I love to see this spread far and wide. While I've got an appreciation for dedication to quality, I have a bigger appreciation for Not Being a Douchebag. So that puts Nick Cho and his tax cheating ass squarely on the wrong side of me. If there's such thing as justice, his Arlington location (Douchebaggery HQ) will get shut down and sold off to pay his DC taxes. I live all of three blocks away, and would gladly welcome back the crappy old junk store that used to occupy that location.
Funny espresso rant
July 14, 2008 12:18pm
Oh, please, Jonathan. There's another perfectly acceptable option - "We'd encourage you not to, because [explanation about taste]. Are you sure you want that?" And then act accordingly.
Anyway, they're not *really* concerned about tight adherence to rules. Why did they have to close their DC location? Oh, right, they couldn't bother paying their taxes. Maybe they had a policy against it?

History of "jet lag"
July 7, 2008 10:59am
Brings to mind one of my favorite ever bits of writing -
Her mortal soul is leagues behind her, being reeled in on some ghostly umbilical down the vanished wake of the plan that brought her here. Souls can't move that quickly, and are left behind, and must be awaited, upon arrival, like lost luggage.

1UP says Konami "made it clear we wouldn't be leaving until we signed" NDA (Now with "Escape from Konami" Flash game!)
June 14, 2008 4:09pm
That posting should have been the death knell not only of that writer's career, but of 1UP. And yet pretty much all I saw in the comments was props.

Seriously, how goddamn cool is this? When he made this, the chances of this ever being seen outside of a very small circle of family and friends was near zero. And here we are, in a time where millions and millions of people will have access to in the present and future.
Awesome.

February 14, 2008 8:21am
I got caged in one of those plexiglass things, once, and while I was waiting for one agent to come open it, I had the pleasure of watching another agent *drop* my laptop (through sheer carelessness - not really an accident). Thankfully, the guy who was in line behind me caught it just as it hit the rollers, and no apparent damage done.
It's amazing how angry I got so quickly. I suspect it has something to do with being caged. I now completely understand why otherwise completely normal people go apeshit at security, sometimes.

January 10, 2008 9:04am
Ah, the fun of Google deciding what you are, and thus how to treat you. It was fun when they forced me into using Google.cz in the Czech Republic last month, but it was *really* fun when they simply shut me down for 10 days with no reason this month.
Proposed Google motto revision - "We'll decide what's evil, thanks."
Post your flight hassles at MyBadFlight.com
December 7, 2007 7:04pm
Hmm, a web site where people get to bitch about flying. The purpose, again?
No airline is going to read it, and it certainly won't fix genuine issues. I'm a *frequent* flier, and appreciate what enormous cock-ups the airlines can manage. That said, the crap I hear from 90% of the public when they bitch about flying is so ridiculously uninformed I almost think they deserve whatever happened to them.
Oh, wait. Maybe there *is* a purpose to the site - it'll keep them all in one place.
Canada's DMCA won't get any consumer rights added to it for a decade
December 7, 2007 5:51am
Well, if the DMCA can be dropped on Canada so quickly, then so can a consumer rights bill. No to one without the other. If gov't pushes back, ask why it's elevating a small industry over all of its people.
Repeat until done.

Radiohead's new downloadable album: DRM-Free!

Went with the intention of buying the album for $20 (premium for leading the way), but then got taken in by the discbox idea, so I spent 40 quid.
Good on ya, Radiohead.
