A much lower powered laser could be used if the camera and the laser where instead pointed at nearby dark surface (it's not clear that that actually isn't the case, the video doesn't show enough). It wouldn't be as intuitive as directly drawing on the building, more like using a wacom tablet as opposed to actually drawing.
