Synchronicity, I'm planning on taking a long weekend starting tomorrow and using City of Heroes for the same goal.

Oregon: our laws are copyrighted and you can't publish them

April 16, 2008 8:27am

#26 - I just RTFA as the slashdotters say, and yeah, this isn't half as bad as the BoingBoing lead made it out to be - in fact the headline is flat out wrong. Oregon is not claiming copyright in the statute, they're claiming it in the 'extras' which are not part of the law itself - selling those extras are probably what finances the work of the Committee; and Justia is apparently slapping their own (C) on it. Sheesh.

Oregon: our laws are copyrighted and you can't publish them

Just a guess but probably the biggest reason Oregon sent the letters is accuracy, not greed. Their concern- They do not want 2, let alone 20 mirror sites out there, all purporting to be 'the Oregon statutes' for the laymen Googling public to rely on. New laws are passed and integrated into the code weekly- how often will these mirrors be updated, and will Joe Blow using Google understand how to evaluate how current the mirror's statutes are? Or what if there's just a flat out contradiction between an official statute and the mirror?

Superman's creator's heirs awarded copyright in Action Comics #1

March 28, 2008 10:58pm

Scottfree - "Wouldn't be sad to see Superman bite the dust [I don't think he has had a solo comic for ages, apart from all stars]."

Superman appears by himself monthly in Action Comics and Superman, continuously published since the 30s; bi-monthly or so in Superman Confidential and All Star Superman. . .as well as Superman/Batman, JLA and guest starring other places.

Reading through the opinion now - If _someone_ should own Superman (not that I agree with that premise), I think it should be the Seigels. Read the opinion, DC's been screwing them for years.

Ok, um, dumb question, but I thought Heroclix (http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/) come already painted? Are the ones pictured homemade?

1.8 million pages of US federal case law to go online for free

November 14, 2007 3:16pm

To ThomasKemp above - I believe the volume & page numbers are ok to use, it was settled back in the '90s (over West's protests of course). That's why you can see regional reporter page numbers ('star pagination') on LEXIS. Volume & Page numbers can't be copyrighted. I don't know though if this new service includes the page numbers however.

The main thing though that kind of makes this not-so-useful, is that you're not going to get topic/keynumbers (which are copyrighted) - just keywords.
