Mysterious, doughy, unknown blob clogs sewer
January 24, 2008 2:40pm
A neighbor's house made a lump of lye soap that totally clogged his drain (then ate through the bottom of the pipe) through the combination of cooking grease and Drano.
Four foot long impenetrable plug in a pipe in their concrete slab. Ouch.
Worse, the Drano then ate through the pipe before the plug such that drainage re-commenced, but out from under the side of the house.

How the UK government deals with a broken light bulb

Yes, they have mercury in them. But certainly not enough to go batshit crazy on the cleanup. The steps are not unreasonable, but do lean to the overly cautious.
To put this into perspective, a CFL generally contains about 1/10th as much mercury as a mercury based medical thermometer.
If you were to perpetually break and then huff the contents of CFLs, it would be a major problem. However, the primary risk of cleaning up a single broken lamp is cuts from the broken glass, not mercury poisoning.
There have been some completely ridiculous and overblown stories in the US about the "hazards of CFL" that claim that you need to seal the room and call in professionals. Funny, though, as most of the stories are initially published in rabid fundamentalist conservative rags. Coincidence? Me-thinks not.
How to stop free software from becoming proprietary software
November 13, 2007 7:33pm
GPL: Free as in Herpes.
GPL is a means of contractually guaranteeing that if you don't do jack shit with the software you release and some other party picks up and runs with it, they have to share their shit with you.
It is akin to a five year old getting bored with a toy but requiring anyone who does something interesting with said toy share with them.
I.e. a license for people lacking in self confidence.
Me?
BSD or MIT license, thanks. Truly free and I never have to worry about using said software in whatever project or within whatever company I'm working for. If there isn't true value in posting back the changes it means one of two things:
- the changes aren't worth posting back
- the open source community couldn't give a shit about the project and, thus, it is time for a major shift in focus anyway

Someone has to pay for the bandwidth.
If the Norwegian ISPs are relatively unique, they will have sold bandwidth without over-promising availability of bandwidth to their customers.
If they are anything like the United States ISPs, then they will have promised -- say -- 3mbps to the customer site, but their network backbone will be incapable of sustaining the aggregated bandwidth if any significant # of customers actually try to *use* that bandwidth.
BitTorrent shifts bandwidth costs to the consumer. Works great, if the customer is actually getting what they think they are paying for....
