Violent video-games are relaxing
April 4, 2008 10:30am
Haven't played WoW, but have found videogames of ALL types to be relaxing, ever since Space Invaders. Hell, even blowing the heads off hordes of zombies with a shotgun in Resident Evil 4 was incredibly cathartic, and afterward I'd sleep like a li'l baby. Ahhhhh.
Funny no-parking message
March 14, 2008 9:31am
In the town where I grew up someone had painted just as crudely on their regular garage door: "No se orine aqui!" Which I think means "Don't piss here!"
There weren't many hispanic residents in this town, yet the message was there for years.
TED 2008 -- author Amy Tan
February 29, 2008 10:50am
The difference between JJ Abrams and Amy Tan is that Abrams will never show you what is in the box. In fact, he relishes not knowing what is in it himself.
Whether that makes him more original or a better writer is up for debate.

If you put this shit in a movie people would never believe it.
Quentin Crisp said it best:
If you describe things as better than they are, you are considered to be a romantic; if you describe things as worse than they are, you will be called a realist; and if you describe things exactly as they are, you will be thought of as a satirist.

The video was funny, but the comments thread for this post is the funniest one I've seen yet on BingBong. I don't know when I've laffed so hard! Oh, the humanity.
It almost makes up for my time spent foolishly skimming the long and tiresome rants about Honda and Microsoft.
Almost.

Cop roughs up teenage skateboarder on video
February 13, 2008 6:58pm
OMG, a COP hassled a SKATER?!?! What is this world coming to?
Well, at least the kid learned a good lesson - cops can be gigantic dicks. I'm not saying all cops are dicks, but a hell of a lot of them are.
And here's another clue for the little grommet (what we used to call kids who skated back in the olden days of yore when I ground a curb or two) - uh...dude? when you're illegally skating somewhere, and you aren't fast/smart enough dodge the cop in the first place and you end up in a confrontation, act like you're Eddie Haskell (google it, dude). Those wanna-be intimidating control freaks eat that shit up with a silver spoon.
Really I'm just bummed we didn't have mini video cams and every other goddam thing when I skated! I fondly remember receiving some choice words of advice from a hardon in uniform on several occasions...

HOWTO make a camera stabilizer out of string, a screw and a washer
February 1, 2008 8:10am
A little fastener nomenclature trivia:
Having worked in the hardware industry for years, I can tell you that both are screws. The tapered/pointy type are either wood- or sheetmetal-screws, and the non-tapered/non-pointy type are called machine screws. Typically what people call a "bolt" is a machine screw with a hexagonally shaped head. The odd thing is, an "eye bolt" always has machine threads, and an "eye screw" is always tapered/pointy. Another odd thing is that the tripod mount hole has always been 1/4-20 size, even though I'd bet that everything else on a camera (and most other new stuff) has changed to metric sizes.

Someday people will finally realize that other species are much more intelligent than we give them credit for. Octopi, for instance. There are other kinds of intelligence than what humans typically test for!
Then again, perhaps we'll have killed off most of the species on the planet before we realize it. Yeah, humans are real smart!

@#40 Bruce Arthurs
Not sure exactly when this happened, but it DID happen. Everyone should tip 20%. Blame Bush if you want - he probably deserves it. Although at this point, his crimes are so numerous that crippling the (American) working class poor economically just fades away into the haze.

Tasered and shot with a beanbag gun for videotaping warrantless police search
October 17, 2007 12:30pm
Ugh. As a longtime resident of Portland, I feel an all-too-familiar sinking feeling in my stomach when I read this. Portland in general is a 'progressive' city, yet the police department is obviously out of control, and has been for a long time. Mark Kroeker was even hired as chief AFTER the L.A. riots! Talk about a WTF moment.
There have been numerous failed efforts to create a civilian review board (one that has actual power) since the police department's own review system essentially always finds the same result: "Nope, those cops who beat/shot/tased/killed the "suspect" did nothing wrong at all!"
I can't think of a single instance when an officer in question was actally disciplined in any substantial way after any incident like this. Disgusting.
Boing Boing tv: Ask "Simpsons" director David Silverman
October 11, 2007 4:35pm
@apelad: I've been watching since the very beginning, and I continue to watch the Simpsons every week. The sad part is these days I'm averaging maybe one weak chuckle per episode if I'm lucky, and most often simply a groan at the end when I realize I've watched yet another without laughing AT ALL. My wife refuses to even watch anymore.
The sole exception to this is usually the Halloween episodes - those are usually pretty awesome!
p.s. your comics are rad.
SimCity adds global warming to the mix

The US government should sponsor the addition of in-game terrorist strikes. Then you could figure out how you'll surveil the citizens of your city - Hmmm, now where do I put all those security cameras...
Boing Boing tv: Ask "Simpsons" director David Silverman
October 11, 2007 8:48am
The Simpsons status as a cultural icon is secure, obviously, and the show initially set the bar for TV satire, improving over many seasons to become biting, hilarious, and truly subversive. However, there is a widespread feeling that it has declined in the last few seasons.
The writing has always been the most important factor in the show's success, IMO, so how can the show attract more talented writers? Is there more competition out there for the talent (Family Guy, etc)? Is it possible for the Simpsons to become great again, or has it's day passed? What is the point of continuing until they've exhausted every variation on every classic story line ad nauseum? Why can't the current crop of writers write one single goddamn joke?

Charles Phoenix visits Denver
September 23, 2007 4:33pm
This thread is blowing my mind! I was born in Denver in the early seventies, and the memories are flooding back...enthusiastic gushing follows:
For me, the ideal birthday would have included Casa Bonita and Celebrity, but the theater would have been the Cooper! That's where I saw Star Wars AND The Empire Strikes Back when they premiered. My mom loves to tell the story of how the line for Star Wars was so humongous we had to get McDonalds burgers and eat while we were waiting (IN THE RAIN) because it took so damn long! Now, the Cooper is also gone, like the old Elitch Gardens.
The food at Casa Bonita was strictly incidental - criticizing it is like saying the food at Disneyland sucks. Who cares? When you've got grottoes to explore, gorillas running around, and guys cliff-diving in the middle of the room? C'mon! Food is the last thing on your mind.
I'll never forget the time I was finally tall enough to ride Mr. Twister, the old wooden coaster at Elitch's. It scared the holy hell out of me and made me sick all night! I kept getting dizzy. Man, that was great.
I, too, remember the Soda Straw! My cousin always had his birthday parties there. I was really envious. There was something peculiar about the way they sang happy birthday, but I can't remember exactly what it was...
On a side note, my aunt worked at Celebrity, and one summer in the 80's, my dad got a job remodelling some part of it. I got to hang out there with my little sister for DAYS at a time, playing free skee-ball, free video games, and watersliding until our eyes were blood red from the chlorine. In retrospect, it was perhaps not ideal parenting, but for a kid it was freakin' AWESOME.
