Mandatory is not totally accurate. Super conservative orthodox Jews can get out of service on religious grounds. Ironic that moderate Israelis get to serve on their behalf.

I think the most tragic trait of a market economy is that most of the work we do is redundant or counter productive. Think of all the people working on the same problems. Think of all the incompatible standards, proprietary systems, and planned obsolescence. Think of the people who's job it is to support all the people who don't have time to cook their own meals or fix their own plumbing because their busywork job takes all their time. We could be as prosperous with a 16 hour work week while using less resources.

It may run a little long for the internet attention span, but the bbtv cuts are akward. Kudos on the addition of mozart though.

The fact that Google's shareholders voted that day _against_ the anti-censorship proposal should be enough to justify some criticism. Maybe someone wants to go hassle Yahoo or Cisco next week? Anyone?

If you ride a bike, you will burn more calories than if you are stationary, but that is minimal. In addition to the previous points, I would like to point out that if you are active, your body will become more efficient. It will actually squeeze more energy out of the food you eat, and your muscles will adapt for endurance (see white meat versus dark meat).

I'm not sure I'd want to be a high resolution "extra" in NPR's photograph, but I doubt they would have asked.

People who loathe so called security cameras will be hard pressed to insist on their right to photograph any time, any place. Is everyone allowed to shoot without permission *except the property owners? Who is more likely to put their images on the internet?

Some of the anti-photo madness is backlash from the intrusive presence of cheap consumer gadgets in our public space. It is the same impulse that leads to shops barring cell phones on their premises. They may not have the right, it may not help anything, but you can see there are motivations beyond anti-terrorism fear mongering.

If you're going to respond, please know that I am a public space activist who loathes security cameras...
