That Violet Blue thing

July 1, 2008 12:58pm

I've spent some time thinking about this today, and I've come to the conclusion that I couldn't care less. I would be more shocked to learn that the editors don't occasionally go back through the archives and purge material that they no longer agree with.

Weirdest Examples of Mass Hysteria

I couldn't get through the article for all of the enormous, barely relevant images.

Leaf growing from cucumber

That doesn't even look like a cucumber leaf.

Microsoft tries to put a ceiling on ultra-low-cost PC power

May 12, 2008 11:37am

@radioguy

Simpler, IMO, to just attack the features. You can play funny games with the numbers, but the device either has a touch interface, or not, etc. I could be completely off base, but the other arenas in which MS is playing were the first things I thought of when I read this.

Microsoft tries to put a ceiling on ultra-low-cost PC power

May 12, 2008 8:43am

My guess is that their motivation here actually has little to do with full-fledged low-cost PCs, but rather single-board touchscreen industrial and automotive controllers. Those almost certainly could use any stripped-down version of Windows that would go in a low-cost PC, but Microsoft wants them to buy either full versions of Windows or the 'embedded' version, not the low-cost PC option.

Words approximate, as I'm not completely up on what Microsoft is calling all their specialized products these days.

Rob Cockerham hacks the "Gold Kit"

April 8, 2008 2:09pm

This is really funny, but I'd be much too concerned about mail fraud charges to play with this. Thanks for sending me back to Rob's site - I haven't been there in way too long!

Droid Sans Mono, a sweet monospace font

November 16, 2007 10:10am

I did a small survey of monospace fonts a while ago. The short story is that I fell in love with a font called APlusBM (download, sample), despite the fact that its bold isn't really monospace. It's a real pity, because I found its proportions and style by far the most pleasing to the eye of any other I'd found.

I found the bold to be close enough to the regular spacing to overlook it. Not sure I ever tested italics.

MIT student arrested for entering Boston airport with "fake bomb"

September 21, 2007 11:10am

That's clearly the outside of the hoodie. Seams are rightside out, the draw string is visible, and (most telling) the pouch in the front would not be inside the garment.
