Actually $15 sounds quite reasonable, compared to the $62 cardboard boxes from the other day.
NYTimes.com hand-codes its HTML
April 30, 2008 6:16am
I think part of the issue has to do the lack of proper training in the web design field. For years now, print designers have had to pick up the slack when colleges refuse to train web-specific designers. Most print designers who end up doing web design are self-taught, and aren't familiar with the myriad compatibility issues between platforms and browsers.
Compounding the issue is the fact that HR departments are instructed to look for graphic designers when they really need web designers. They don't realize they are divergent fields.
Because web design is 2/3 programming and 1/3 actual design, companies should be hiring a web programmer to hard-code the website, and a web designer (or user-interface designer) to design the look and feel of the site.

The word "hard" is pretty dang obvious on the label, but people never read labels.
(Yeah, I'm a packaging designer.)
11 students suspended for banana prank

20% of scientists in an informal survey admitted to using ‘cognitive enhancing’ drugs
April 16, 2008 5:29pm
In other news, 78% of professional artists and musicians admitted to using ‘creativity enhancing’ drugs, such as Caffeine, Ethyl Alcohol, and Tetrahydrocannabinol. Another 14% admitted to participating in dangerous behavior like driving fast and sleep deprivation to stimulate creative output. A statistically insignificant number stated they "read books", "write" and "take walks" to try to come up with new ideas.
Oregon: our laws are copyrighted and you can't publish them
April 16, 2008 12:08am
I've worked for Thomson West (albeit as a temp packing boxes) and somehow I doubt they'd publish Oregon's Revised Statutes without being commissioned to do so.
Or else they've just been doing it for so long that nobody cares.
Or else Oregon thinks it would be better if they didn't tell one of the nation's largest publisher of law books not to make any more for them unless they order them.

Photo of honor system at bookstore in Ojai, CA
April 14, 2008 1:42pm
In my hometown of Williamson, NY most of the sweet-corn stands are honor system. I remember only one incident where someone tried to steal corn, and that was big a mistake as the stand belonged to the town judge. :-o

Corporate-sponsored spying on green groups
April 11, 2008 12:45pm
Hmmm... spies is so accusatory. What I meant is the watchdogs are being watched.

Wal-Mart corporate archivist selling access to recordings of exec meetings to plaintiff-side lawyers
April 10, 2008 10:35am
“Once in a while you come upon documents that are helpful in a case,” the Berkeley, Calif.-based lawyer added. “What’s amazing about this is that this company has a video record going back many years showing senior management in at times fairly candid situations.”
Seriously, who is going to watch years of corporate meetings in the hopes of finding some embarrassing or "incriminating" footage. I know it's Wal*Wart, and the world hates them, especially the poor folks that are forced to shop there because of their "lower prices", but it's not like they sacrifice a black cat at the start of every meeting.
Seems like this guy's found a good way to capitalize on people's paranoia.
McCain and conspiracy theorists agree that Washington is Satanic
April 9, 2008 3:44pm
"It's harder and harder trying to do the Lord's work in the city of Satan," McCain said.
It's possible he was drawing a word picture here, a figure of speech not to be taken literally. Of course, that's no fun is it?

Logo carved onto human hair
April 4, 2008 5:15pm
Of course it's real. The ion beam would be move on a flat plane, so even though it's cutting onto a curved surface, it appears flat. Don't expect it to curve around like shrink wrap packaging.
Jacob Holdt: American Pictures 1970-1975
March 29, 2008 12:58am
I'm sure this guy is a great artist, with a keen eye for capturing the underbelly of society, but his captions still read like satire.
For instance:
"Boss ordering black to work with cut off fingers"
"Mink fur for the rich - death to the poor"
"Children learning white supremacy like their fathers"
"Black crucified in front of Congress"
"Ghetto children under freeways for white suburbia"
Seriously? Sure the far far left will eat this up, but I've lived in rural America most of my life, and I'm incredulous.
Also, I'm going to go way out on a limb here and guess he entered the US at Calais, Maine. (That'd be a shock for anyone visiting the "greatest nation in the world" for the first time.)

Teen pranksters switch off San Francisco's electric buses
March 11, 2008 1:54pm
Democrat solution:
Step 1: Blame Republicans.
Step 2: Stage rally to boost public support for new buses with locking panels.
Step 3: Support group for victims of bus tampering meets on Wednesday nights at the community center.
Step 4: Support group needs fundraiser.
Step 5: Conduct research to determine how widespread problem is and what the best solution is. Use lots of focus groups.
Step 6: Allow bus companies to bid on government contract for new buses with locking panels.
Step 7: Pick most expensive solution.
Step 8: Raise gas taxes to pay for new buses and associated costs. Make sure new tax increase lasts at least twice as long as needed.
Step 9: Fend off criticism about the length of time it has taken to get new buses by blaming Republicans.
Republican Solution:
Step 1: Blame Democrats for forcing transition to hybrid buses.
Step 2: Lock the panels.
Step 3: Ensure the future security of the panels by making sure an armed officer of the law is present on every bus.
Step 4: Drive SUVs.

#6 Noen You don't really expect Americans to have rational, adult views about sex do you? There is a very large segment of the population in America for whom even the slightest hint of sex must be vigorously repressed.
I fully expected that last sentence to read "There is a very large segment of the population in America for whom even the slightest hint of sex elicits juvenile laughter and dick jokes." That's probably closer to the truth.
Loony evangelical claims credit for Canadian film tax-credit changes that will doom edgy indie movies

Moderate Christians, like myself, understand that no matter what they say, people like you, Takuan, will always assume the worst about them. So why bother?

Texas students shut down highway and march 7 miles to vote in gerrymandered district
February 23, 2008 9:54am
This is a dangerous way to protest. As far as I know, ambulances and other emergency vehicles have not been endowed with hovering capabilities, and could potentially become trapped in traffic, endangering lives. Not to mention the folks that couldn't get to their polling stations because the roads were blocked. Kids should think before they do stuff like this.

Treehouse ruins: the archaeology of kids' ruins
February 20, 2008 12:36am
Probably far more than you think.
I would never have imagined such a deep philosophical introspective based upon old tree-forts. Makes me wonder what people think of the myriad plywood platforms and scrap 2x4's attached to various trees in the woods behind my childhood home.
