Starving people in Haiti eating mud

April 21, 2008 12:47am

I can't remember who said they couldn't believe girls in America would believe you can't get pregnant the first time...but I was that girl. Alot of girls I knew believed that. I heard it from other girls like they did and we all reinforced that belief in each other. I heard so many crazy things like that when I was a teenager (during the 80s), you wouldn't believe it. Teenage girls are not so mature that they can discern scientific truth from rumors. And there was zero sex ed in our school district which was in a major metropolitan city. If no one tells a growing woman otherwise, she will believe these things into her adulthood.

The hunger situation is also not just a third world problem. There are plenty of problems with distribution of food to the poor right here in America. I honestly think that greed is the number one reason that perfectly edible food is destroyed. For instance: someone I know works in a state-run food service institution, and they confiscate food and destroy it and refuse to give it to food banks because they say if they keep free food supplies short, then people will be forced to buy food, thereby keeping everyone involved in food production profitable. There is enough food to go around, and we will not run out of food. Rather, the situation is that more and more people are running out of enough money to buy food.

60% of world's paintings come from one village in China

April 20, 2008 11:38pm

Speaking as an artist:

Why don't you take a look over at some online art communities, and witness the anger of living artists who have had their copyrights violated and find reproductions of their original work for sale in the very same venues they try to sell at online, for hundreds of dollars less. Who's making these reproductions and stealing business right out from under the artists? The guys this article tries to cast in a positive light. These "artists" are not artists, they are thieves and they have absolutely no respect for the true artists they steal from. The general art buying public is not "sophisticated" enough in the goings-ons of the other side of the art market to recognize fraud. Quite often the fraudulent paintings are sold under the name of one single person, as if that person created an original. So you see, I resent these criminals being called artists. They are nothing like us (us being real artists, that is.)

Figure at rest inside a latex vacuum bed (video)

April 15, 2008 8:27pm

I have seen this device several years ago in a documentary about a dominatrix who teaches a sex class. She puts her students in it. it is definitely a sexual toy.

Time-lapse video of man trapped in an elevator for 41 hours

April 15, 2008 7:02pm

I'm appalled that some of you think this is funny. This video was incredibly sad. Try having some compassion and putting yourselves in someone else's shoes for a while: being helpless, hungry, thirsty, bored, desperate, uncomforatable and trapped in a confined space and the light never goes out. Really thought I'd see a better response from some boingboing readers.

My reaction to this video was sympathy. My reaction to the article (I only read the parts about Nicholas White) is that while I understand his reaction, I myself would have chosen a different path. I would not have given up my job, but I would have sued the building management.

It's like a Twilight Zone episode.

Ted Turner: global warming could lead to cannibalism

April 4, 2008 6:48pm

Well, in China during a massive famine, people did eat each other. There is plenty of documentation, including photographs, of street vendors selling human body parts for consumption. People will eat each other if they are desperate enough. There is also anecdotal evidence it happened recently during a famine in North Korea.

I myself, would rather die than eat a person. Not because I feel noble, but people are full of disease. I would be too disgusted.

And Pipenta, that was a beautiful post.

Poltergeists and quantum mechanics

April 1, 2008 5:06pm

I know I saw some years ago on television a video report of a researcher who elevated the levels of electromagnetic frequencies in a room and objects started levitating and flying around. I can't remember the details of the source of the article though.

Photos of Antarctic sea creatures

April 1, 2008 4:59pm

I wish I wish I wish they didn't kill these specimens. I know they are just itching to dissect them, though. If you read the accompanying articles, they stated that as soon as they brought the creatures out of the water, they froze to death. It's a hard balance between observing in the wild and also wanted to know what their insides look like and how they operate. I'd be happy with just the observations. And I also skipped dissection in high school because it traumatized me.

Libraries and the occult

April 1, 2008 4:54pm

It is a pain to try to sort through new age/spirituality/etc.. sections to get to what I consider occult books. The real problem is that the occult field of study covers such a vast territory that categorization is probably pointless.

Cthulhu cake!

I can just imagine how good it must taste!! I wonder if eating it gives you nightmares.

Woman told to remove nipple rings for Texas flight

March 27, 2008 5:28pm

The more I think about this the angrier I get. In the news article the woman said the male TSA employees were snickering at her, and to make it even worse they were doing it while she was crying. There was more going on here than airport security.

Woman told to remove nipple rings for Texas flight

March 27, 2008 5:20pm

Wow, that's just so idiotic. I won't fly either. but I used to before 911. And it isn't fear of terrorists, but the airport security personnel that's keeping me off planes. If I want to go overseas, I'll take a boat.

I'll start using it if you will. ;)

Artist chided for wrapping street art in black cloth

March 23, 2008 12:22pm

If it was my sculpture, I would be offended. Simple as that. It was rude to cover it. However, I do understand "reclaiming" the public space by covering it. If you're not afraid to be rude to the artists to make your statement then do so, but don't forget that a real person made that sculpture and is probably very proud that someone (the city) is displaying it.

Man kills self with suicide robot

March 20, 2008 11:20am

What a sad story. I also think it's courageous and shows how clever people are. I do feel sad for him that he had to go to these extremes. Obviously, he couldn't bring himself to just hold the gun to his own head and pull the trigger. Can you imagine how long it must have taken to do what he did?

Robots are killing people in Iraq already, so it's not like it's the first one to shed human blood. Still interesting for a scifi geek like me, though. Seems like cyberpunk fantasy is becoming more and more commonplace reality.

Father and son sport forehead tattoos

March 19, 2008 12:52pm

Some of these comments made me laugh out loud.

I actually felt a little sorry for the son here in these mugshots, as he was obviously trying to imitate his dad, like alot of young boys are wont to do, and now he's gonna look like an idiot an not be able to get a job for the rest of his life. Thanks Dad for setting such a good example.

Argentinian "gnome" scaring the bejezus out of kids

I can understand the kids being frightened. I wonder if he lives in the village why no one knows him? Maybe he's from a nearby village.

Pro golfer hits balls at hawk until he kills it, then denies he tried to kill it

March 7, 2008 1:13pm

This makes me sad. Angry too, but mostly sad.

I live on a mountain in a rural area, and there are hawks, eagles, and vultures here among all the other avian wildlife. So I see hawks every day, and they always make me pause, as their flight is so elegant and beautiful to watch. Sometimes they fly slowly right above my head. I always wave my arms to shoo them away from my yard to protect my cats, and that always works. It's malicious to throw something at them.

A golfer knows how hard his golfball is flying. He can't claim ignorance on this because even if he didn't expect it to die, he should have known he was risking injury to it.

ComplaintRemover promises to rid the Intertubes of LOLCats

March 6, 2008 11:08pm

So now the poor site admins at LOLCats are going to have to deal with these thugs? I don't find that amusing, not a very nice prank by the "good folks" at Consumerist.

Unless I am misunderstanding something here, what has essentially happened is that LOlcats have been put into the crosshairs of this crazy threatening service? Am I missing something? Like the humor?

Why is this company still legally operating in America?

Spielberg launching social network for UFO and paranormal buffs?

March 4, 2008 8:17pm

I'm very interested in the paranormal, so I would check this site out and give it a chance.

But, I already have online social networking sites fatigue. A group at an already established site would have been better.

Not a pretty baby. Never saw a baby like that. I've seen some of the realistic ones online and they are amazing and wonderful. This is just...hideous.
